WAR IN CONCERT:

Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

  • War - Great memories, great show

    by Truth4aCause on 2/23/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

4-1/2 stars! Lonnie, original singer & writer or co-writer on most of the songs, is the only original member left. I missed the chemistry of the old group, but the music was wonderful, Lonnie's jokes were funny, and the program full. He and his band played for 2-1/2 hours (a tremendous value)! His voice was strong and clear. Their playlist covered all of War's famous hits. Plus, his wife was there and seeing them interact was very sweet. I highly recommend this concert.

late on stage....played 3 hits...extended the hits with babble and drival and way too instrumental. younger audience were unfortunately up near our upper balcony seats smoking weed 3/4 of the show.......not cool ! too many cell phones recording when there's several signs warning they're banned...very distracting light

Wow! Four decades later, War still has the same sound, the same beat, the same enthusiasm. They haven't lost even half a step.

  • war was terrible!!!!

by revjoc1 on 2/19/11San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - HighlandRating: 1 out of 5

What happen to the War that was awesome in the 60's and 70's, 80's. Just played a few lyrics of some of there hits then went into some crap they though was music. I guess since Eric Burdon and some of the passing and leaving of the orginal members the quality has suffered. Can someone tell Brown to stop trying to take credit for writing songs and please just sing the songs. Oh yeah! the complete song... just being honest but the holding of this event in a ballroom was complete crap....Tower of Power should have headline

  • Band was good, venue was not

by Ribose on 2/19/11San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - HighlandRating: 1 out of 5

Tower of Power is one of the best live bands around. Unfortunately, they played at the San Manuel Casino in what is normally their bingo room. It is a very large, flat ballroom so regardless of where you are sitting, you have to look over a sea of heads to the stage, which was not high enough. I do not recommend seeing any shows at this location unless you sit in the first few rows. BTW... WAR was a bore.

  • Maybe just a "Battle"

by jagdiva on 2/18/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 3 out of 5

Not a full blown "war", maybe just a battle. Started off with canons and after about 3 songs fizzled to firecrackers -- too much adlibing.

  • WAR was outstanding!!!

    by Dancr1 on 2/16/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

WAR is sooo good to listen to. When they play now they give you that nostalgic feeling because they sound like they did when they all were in their twenties!!!!! Audience participation was fun. They need to pick the people who really are into them and the music though during the show. I am saying this because I did not get to go up and sing with them. It was cool though. Have T -shirts to sell next time and Lonnie.... let your wife go long enough to sign an autograph or two. My last shirt is worn out and I need a new autograph!!!!!!

  • Great Show....So-So Venue

by MeechieInDC on 2/14/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

The Birchmere is wonderful EXCEPT the god-forsaken parking that is not monitored..so there are always at least 10 spaces wasted for those poop-heads who won't pull all the way in to the tandem spaces. Tables are tight. Can not stress enough...get there early!! But WAR was phenomenal and made up for the parking and seating madness.

  • Oldschool Party - Remembering the good old days!

    by Dimples100 on 2/14/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

WAR put on an awesome show, whomever didn't enjoy the show it was a reflection from themselves; not the show. Ps..the food was over priced & poor quality, but great servicer!!

  • war was just like the old days

by msjrobin on 2/14/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

AWESOME, AWESOME, the best show i've seen in a very long time. The sound system, the songs were great. I WAS TOLD THEY GIVE A HORRIBLE SHOW BEFORE I CAME AND I HAD PURCHASED THREE TICKETS AND THE PEOPLE I BOUGHT THEM FOR DECLINED BECAUSE THEY SAID WAR WAS NOT GOOD. SO I BOUGHT TWO OTHER LADIES AND WE PARTIED THE ENTIRE SHOW.

  • by babyneck on 2/13/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

This was the best show I have seen in a long time. War did every song they made and they didn't mess it up by adding dumb stuff. Everything sounded original. If you ever get a chance please see them. The band was great. All of the members were really good. I lost 10 pounds in my chair from moving to the beat. I come to Birchmere often. The service is good and the food is always good. It's a nice place to see a good show get a good meal and chill.

Lonnie Jordan has done a great job picking the people he has for the group. The band is tight. I grooved from the second they hit the stage War gave it up the whole night
