About

WAR IN CONCERT:

Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

  • Weak performances except War

by Granny on 8/15/24The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 1 out of 5

I've made a decision to no longer waste money buying tickets to see vocal performers who were in their prime back in the day 80s, 90s 2000. Their voices are no longer strong nor do they have the stamina for the performance as well as the instrumental portion has also declined from the original. I'm done.

  • I had a great time.

War was great, I wish they did more songs. Midnight Star put on a good show. The Mary Jane Girls were cool. The Ohio Players which I love, their sound system did not sound that good. It really sounded quite bad.

  • “LOUD”!

by Rocky on 8/13/24The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

Considering it’s an amphitheater, the sound was horrible! A better sound engineer would be great!!!

  • Upgrade the sound system at Chene Park!

by Yvette on 8/13/24The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

For as much as tickets cost, the sound system should be fantastic! The band is great! They brought back sweet memories! Unfortunately, the sound system at The Aretha Franklin Ampitheater is AWFUL!!!!

  • Nice but Long

by Ronnie on 8/13/24The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

Having 4 bands was too much. It took at least total of ninety minutes to change over each act. During that time the DJ was phenomenal. The order of the bands should have been different.

  • The Mary Jane Girl's, Midnight Star, Ohio Players, War

by JOY on 8/13/24The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

The Mary Jane Girls were great, Midnight Star was great too! Giving the best performance. The ohio players base amplifier was so loud, I felt it in my chest. I could not hear the singers cause they were drowned out by the base. War was excellent! I must give two thumbs up to the Aretha Franklin Anthem Theater one of the best things in the city Detroit! A shout out to the staff. From the bathroom attendants to the servers, ushers and security top-notch. Great 👍

  • Great energy, vibe and lineup

by SuzieQ on 8/13/24The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Venue just the right size for a concert, not too big, Detroit River behind the stage added to the summer party vibe. Seats had plenty of legroom and you could flag down bartenders to serve you at your seat. Mary Jane Girls opened with lots of energy. Then came Midnight Star that continued with energy and fun. Ohio players were amazing and energetic as always. Closed out with War who opened with a slow song that brought down the vibe, but their hits at the end had us all dancing.

by Lan on 5/7/24Los Angeles County Fair - PomonaRating: 5 out of 5

WAR put on a fabulous show from beginning to end. There is nothing like a live band that has a playlist of hit after hit and CAN STILL DELIVER THEM after all these years! The music was absolutely electric. I have over 20 concerts booked for this summer and WAR has gotten my concert season off to a sizzling hot start. Loved it.

So much fun. Very nice concert. Sound system was great.

  • Good Show

by Stan on 5/6/24Los Angeles County Fair - PomonaRating: 4 out of 5

As a WAR fan, the show was good. Truly enjoyed the jam sessions. Disappointed the “Low Rider” beat was played faster than original and it lost its funk. Of all the WAR songs Low Rider is the hardest hitting and they didn’t hit it as expected.

  • Amazing performance by true musical professionals.

by BoniFive on 5/6/24Los Angeles County Fair - PomonaRating: 5 out of 5

I was dancing and singing the entire concert. The vibe was pleasant the people came to have a great time and that we did.
