WAR IN CONCERT:

Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

  • Deceptive Headliner Marketing

by Briddell on 9/15/24Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 2 out of 5

The concert was marketed as "An Evening with WAR"... a strong implication that WAR would be the headliner (and have the longest performance time). Instead Average White Band played last (and longest). AWB shared this would be their farewell tour... then promptly played cover songs of other groups' hits and left the stage with some of their biggest hits unperformed! Nice venue, the Mable House Amphitheater just east of Atlanta. Confusion over the start time too. My high hopes were dashed.

Good food good drinks good ole school music. Heatwave open up strong then War came in and had the place jumping. AWB kinda disappointed me but they came through in the end. All in all it was worth going to.

  • AMAZING! Off of the charts!

by WAR on 8/21/24Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 5 out of 5

Mable House Barnes Ampitheatre is a special venue! They bring "Old School"dance music that we loved in the 70's, 80's and 90's back to life! I am so amazed at the artists that still want to entertain us at their ages! (Most over 70) Heatwave opened the show and had everyone on their feet from the first beat! After getting us all energized, WAR came on stage and took us back, way back! Energizing, amazing musicians, awesome voices! I would go back and do it over if I could!

  • Great Concert and Venue

by PeteC on 8/21/24Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 4 out of 5

On 8/18/24 I attended a concert featuring HeatWave, WAR, and Average White Band, at Mable House Amphitheater. All bands were great and the setup between acts was relatively quick. Mable House is an outdoor venue with covered seating and the weather cooperated. My wife and I enjoyed the concert and it was a good date night! As for suggestions for improvement, 1) some sort of cooling, ie, large oscillating fans, given it's an outdoor venue, and 2) the bathrooms could be updated.

  • My experience was very nice and so was the venue.

I had very good seating. The bands did their thing, especially War!! I just wish they could have played a few more of their songs. Farewell Average White Band!!

WAR was phenomenal however AWB was late so war had to go on as the second group. I am disappointed that WAR was not the headliner as stated.

Great venue and good music. The only omission was MC Lightfoot hosting. The energy is not the same without him.

  • Worst Concert in over 30 years

by Percy B on 8/21/24Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 1 out of 5

I attend 15 to 20 concerts a year. This was by far the worst I've seen in over 30 years. Heatwave had very good instrumental play, but the vocals were very out of tune. They performed for only 30 minutes WAR came on second and was not the headliner as it was advertised. WAR did not perform many of their hits and everyone was wondering what happened. They sounded very, very good but their show was cut short. AWB closed the evening. They began their show with three songs that no one never heard of. The audience was very disappointed. I left after their fourth song.
