“A MAJOR MUSICAL. RICH, EPIC AND ENGROSSING. A CELEBRATION OF BROADWAY CRAFTSMANSHIP.” -The Washington Post
Two-time Tony Award-winning legends Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole join forces to portray the trailblazing cosmetic icons who built empires in a business world ruled by men.
From the creators of Grey Gardens and the director of Rent and Next to Normal, WAR PAINT tells the remarkable story of Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden—fierce rivals who defined 20th Century beauty. In creating an industry, they reinvented themselves and revolutionized how the world saw women.
The only reasons to see this play are Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole. The music disappoints. What should have had some fun, was plodding.
Play was good but music was not. A waste with such talented stars.
We enjoyed this show very much. We did not know the story of Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubenstein and their roads to success. We loved the set - it was simple and enabled the story to move along without dragging or waiting for elaborate changes. The cast and crew provided an escape to an earlier time, and a wonderful entertainment experience. I would gladly see this again, and recommend it highly.
Story like Alexander Hamilton show reminds people to become smart, wise, strong to make your destiny. Patti and Christine were Great. Great play and best show.
From the moment I was seated, I was impressed by the fabulous show curtain with a beautiful woman with polished nails applying lipstick. When the curtain went up, the wonderful orchestra played original upbeat music in the style of the era, conducted by Lawrence Yurman. War Paint is a musical documentary of Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden performed expressively by Patti LaPone and Christine Ebersole. There were many solos, duets, big ensemble pieces etc. A wonderful true story which also deals with discrimation of women, gays, anti semitism, immigration and age. There was comical dialogue and also some very touching moments. My husband and I loved this new musical!!! If you are a woman and adore wearing make up, come to see War Paint. If you are a man, bring your wife , sister, or sweetheart.
Both actresses were at their top game - costumes - set design - music - story - go see it!
Very entertaining. All the lead actors fit their respective roles on spot. A must see!
Wonderfully done! The staging, the fashions, the lighting, the story, the score. Topped off by a super professional cast. But we came to see Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole and they delivered. They both are at the top of their game! Teaming them with John Dossett and DOUG Sills just made them even better. Worth the money!
Two great performers help a so-so musical. The sound in the theatre was good but the view was not.
Certainly recommend to die hard fans or those with no great expectations. Personally a little disappointing mainly because there were no great showstoppers, hard to hear all lyrics, no interaction between the 2 characters which was unique but misses a bit. Great sets, costumes
The stars, Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole, far surpass the material. They both had wonderful moments in a musical that has very little substance. The set and costumes offered beautiful packaging, but the product was disappointing and unfulfilling, much like the face cream the main characters were peddling.
Stunning musical with a terrific score and well written book. Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole are like thunder and lightning. Sets and costumes absolutely gorgeous. Pamper yourself to an evening of delight!
Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole were amazing as was the entire cast It had every emotion you could imagine humor, drama and at the same time is very current as women are still trying to make their way in the business world and get the credit and recognition they deserve.
I am Patti LuPone's biggest fan, and I would fight anyone to defend that title. She and Christine Ebersole brought more life to this show than the script would have normally allowed. The material was adequate - one or two fantastic numbers, but mostly just average. Across the board, though, performances and production value were extraordinary. Sets and costumes were dazzling (even if the set did break down 5 minutes into the opening, but we were treated to Ms. LuPone and Ms. Ebersole regaling us with tales from their storied pasts) and the orchestra is first rate. I would recommend seeing this just for the star quality at hand - just don't expect to really take anything away from it.
Seeing these two icons of Broadway was a real treat. Both Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole embodied their characters beautifully. I enjoyed the story of these two women, Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden, which I had never really thought about before. The two gentlemen, John Dossett and Douglas Sills, were wonderful in their roles as well. It was a wonderful night of theatre at its best.
Stunning show...one of the best written shows in years...explores layers upon layers of our humanity (resulting from our common choices). Patti and Christine are captivating, creating never-to-forget musical theatre moments. Ensemble and orchestra are faultless. Production is beautiful in every way. Must see for theatre lovers.
Truly enjoyed War Paint. Voices were wonderful. That alone made show worthwhile. Costumes were fabulous. Story was entertaining though not strictly historical.
Christine was FAB. Patti was terrible Accent ruined everything she did.
Amazing show ! every minute we felt lucky to be there in the hands of pros- it was thrilling
This performance was great....... the singing was excellent, comedic timing was perfection and I just love Patti Lupone & Christine Ebersole.....two pros!
