About

Wanda Sykes has been deemed one of the funniest stand up comics by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly's 25 Funniest People in America.

Sykes was seen on several television shows over the past two years.   This year she made a return to HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” starring opposite Larry David.   In 2010 she starred on her own late night talk show on FOX, “The Wanda Sykes Show”.    In October of 2009 her second HBO stand up special “I’ma Be Me” premiered.  It was taped at the Warner theatre in Washington DC where she tackled topics like the first black president, gay cruises, being a new mom and aging.   The special was nominated for two 2010 Primetime Emmy awards: Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special and Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special.

This July she can be heard in the animated feature “Ice Age: Continental Drift” as ‘Granny.’  In 2010 she was heard in the Fox animated feature “Rio” as ‘the Goose.’

Her first HBO comedy special “Wanda Sykes: Sick and Tired” debuted in October 2006 and was nominated for a 2007 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special.  It was taped in Seattle and covered everything from racial profiling to gay marriage.

Sykes was seen in the feature films “Evan Almighty,” the sequel to “Bruce Almighty,” in which she co-starred with Steve Carell, the New Line feature “Monster-In-Law” starring opposite Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, and was heard in the animated feature “Over the Hedge” for Dreamworks as well as “The Barnyard” for Paramount Pictures.   She can also be seen co-starring with Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman in the romantic comedy “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.”  Sykes starred and produced the Comedy Central show "Wanda Does It" where she tried various non-showbiz jobs.  Her first book titled Yeah, I Said It, published by Simon & Schuster, hit bookstores in September 2004.  Yeah, I Said It is a hilarious collection of essays touching on life, family and current events.

In the fall of 2003 she was seen on Fox's "Wanda at Large" which she wrote, produced and starred in. She also has a one hour Comedy Central special called "Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied".  In addition, she can be seen on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" or heard on Comedy Central's "Crank Yankers” as the voice of Gladys Murphy.

Wanda was born in Portsmouth, VA and raised in Maryland.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University. Her stand-up career began at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, DC where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience.

She spent 5 years as part of HBO's critically acclaimed "Chris Rock Show." As a performer and writer on the show, she was nominated for three Primetime Emmys and in 1999 won the Emmy for "Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special."  In 2001, she won the American Comedy Award for "Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic".  She won three more Emmys, in 2002, 2004 and 2005 , for her work on “Inside the NFL” for Outstanding Studio Show - Weekly- Inside The NFL.

In 2010 she won a GLAAD award for promoting equal rights for gays and lesbians in the media.

She also appeared in the feature films: "Pootie Tang", "Nutty Professor 2; The Klumps", and "Down to Earth".

    Very Entertaining

As exepcted, Wanda was hysterical. Funny, witty, dark and light humor. My face hurt when I left Humphreys from the laughter.

Wanda is a very stand up lady!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by v4dragonfly on 9/20/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I could have done with out Keith Robinson. His style was a little bit caustic for me. I would endure him in the future. Only if Wanda Sykes was the headliner. She is so cool. Her comedy overall was entertaining for everyone attending. Look forward to seeing her again.

    Good Times

by ComedyGoer on 9/20/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

No doubt, when Wanda Sykes comes to a place like San Diego, she knows the odd mix of people she'll be entertaining for the evening. Right off the bat: "it's wierd here," before clarifying the comment with a "swingers" reference. Sykes is guaranteed laughter, unless you actually do take Viagra on a regular basis and, to quote Jack Nicholson, "you can't handle the truth." Of course, there's also the chance that many in the crowd weren't sure precisely why they found the watermelon jokes funny...but Sykes is obviously confirming present-day racism in creating such nervous amounts of laughter with those parts of the routine which are anchored to the theme of this show - "white people are looking at you!" Overall, fantastic show, give it up for this girl, and for Esther, who kept it all together until the bitter end when asking for cheesecake!

    Wanda Sykes was a blast

by dynamo on 8/6/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

This show was off the hook. I couldn't stop laughing pretty much the whole time. If you like sick humor and vulgar language this is the show for you. However, I was disappointed that Wanda didn't come back out and give an encore after a standing ovation.

    Excellent!

by nano3226 on 7/23/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

This was the funniest show I've ever seen. Wanda is amazing! This show was 10 times better than her HBO special "Sick and Tired"...And the guy who opened for her was really good too... The Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando is a pretty good venue. It's one big square one-level hall where you have access to the bar at all times.

Wanda Sykes was so funny !!!

by Deerwhisperer on 7/18/09Nokia Theatre At Grand Prairie - Grand Prairie

Wanda started out a little slow, but got up to speed as she went along. She moved around the stage so everyone could see her. Even though she was sick she did a great job.

    Fun!

by JackieB78 on 7/16/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

My cousin and I took our 77 year old grandmother to see Wanda. We all love her! We had such a good time. The only thing we didn't like was that her opening act, the mic was too loud making it hard to understand what he was saying at times. Other than that it was a blast!

    Wanda great Seat sucked

by DebraJeanne on 7/16/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

Becoming a parent has provided her with funny new material that I can relate to as a parent. Enjoyed listening and laughing but my seat SUCKED. The supersized column at Hard Rock Orlando completely blocked our view. Would love to SEE her perform next time. Would have given five stars but she added way too much political comment. I enjoy political HUMOR but it was not delivered or intended as humor. Would have liked her to spend those minutes on more funny stuff.

Skip the gym!! Wanda gives your abs a workout!

by Boogenvillia on 7/16/09Ruth Eckerd Hall - Clearwater

We didn't stop laughing from the time she stepped on the stage until she left and, unforetunately, didn't come back out. She touched on topics relevant to the day such as President Obama being elected and how it must "really" be in office, the birth of her twins, and even how the elderly look at the "little blue pill". You'd be cheating yourself if you miss her show in your area!
