We did not know what to expect but show was great!
Will Stutz was a most convincing Noel. The script was what you would expect if Coward had written it and the music and costuming certainly enhanced the entire afternoon. Seating was its usual uncomfortable and difficult to get to. A little help from the ushers and a little consideration from we ticket holders would have made a lot of difference. But the show was so strong, the lack of seating comfort didn't really matter.
The production of "Noel and Gertie" was outstanding. The venue is intimate (100 or less seats). We attended the next to the lst showing but didn't get the idea that the cast was tired of doing the show. The pianist was outstanding and the acting was superb. The selection was made because "The King and I" is the theatre's current production in the Main Hall. It complimented well.
I remember seeing this in London over two decades ago, with the late Simon Cadell as Coward and Karen Broughton (understudying for Patricia Hodge) as Ms. Lawrence. However, the current production, with the inimitable Will Stutts (whom I have seen in numerous Coward plays, most of which he also directed), was impeccable in its intimacy. Susan Wilder also provided a gorgeous soprano voice to her portrayal of Gertie. My thanks go to the Walnut Street Theatre for rescuing this gem of a revue.
Well crafted staging, great use of the intimate space, actors knew and loved the material, good musicality and phrasing, BUT weak voices, especially Gertie, lessened my enjoyment of the music. (Noel Coward's songs also don't equal many other great songwriters of his era, bu that's a matter of taste) Look for the Funguide price...
Noel could have been more energetic and speak louder; Gertie seemed to have all the umphh! Setting very cozy, staging was excellent. Actors played to whole audience in an almost half theater in the round setting.
Any production that highlights The Master is a significant night at the theater. The performers were professional and superb, an accolade that would, I suspect, be seconded by Coward. See it before it closes. You will not be disappointed.
Will Stutts and Susan Wilder are marvelous together and Ms. Wilder is an especial treat to see and hear. They show a great chemistry together and sing and act their way through Coward's fascinating career.
