who ever decided to portray the king as a comic figure missed the point that the story is about a impossible attraction between anna and the king. Shall we dance which should have been fraught with sexual tension was reduced to a hand-clapping polka. What an embarrassment.

The king of King of I!

by sMiles70 on 1/8/12Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

Absolutely hands down a stellar performance especially by the King and Anna. The King was both funny and powerful at the same time, and Mel Maghuyop did an excellent job playing it up. Anna's voice was sweet and pretty. Beautiful backdrops and colorful performances by all. You gotta see it!

Second half was way too long; Uncle Tom message was obscure but ballet was good - especially those two guys; lovers had great voices, but Anna wasn't that strong a singer; otherwise it could have been a great performance.

    Phenomenal sets, costuming and voices

by chescogardener on 1/7/12Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

Rachael York was the hit of this show for me. I saw her live on Broadway in Victor/ Victoria, where she was on stage with Julie Andrews and a great cast.......Her voice seemed to be channeling Julie Andrews in this production...when you closed your eyes you could have been listening to Julie or to Marni Nixon......Both the Ballet scene and 'Shall We Dance' were the most memorable...loved the whole production....The actor playing the King was excellent and had a fine voice, but his small frame, though believable, maked him seem to be miscast until midway through the first act when he won me over.

    Beyond words -- absolutely magnificent!!!!

by Speths on 1/7/12Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

We have traveled the world and, over decades, have attended concerts and theater on three continents. Our expectations therefore may be considered accordingly. Having said that, I can say, without hesitation, that this was one of the most stirring theater presentations we have ever attended. The quality went beyond all expectations. I don’t know where to begin. The acting was absolutely superb, the quality of the voices equally superb, the choreography and the stage design magical. I don’t often find myself in tears over sheer joy --- it was an emotional journey of rapture and joy. I had never expected something like that here in Philadelphia. Congratulations Walnut theater. You have reached unexcelled heights!!!

    Etc., Etc., Etc...

Loved, loved, loved seeing "The King and I" at Walnut Street Theater. Rachel York, as Anna, was lovely (such a beautiful voice!), and the actor who played the King of Siam was quite dynamic. I saw his performance as "The Engineer" in "Miss Saigon" at WST last summer. He is a very talented actor, and I really enjoyed his interpretation of the King. The children in the show were darling. Our seats were perfect with a birds-eye view of the stage. Overall, it was a fabulous night at the theatre that left me humming the songs of the show all the way back to the car.

    Amazing Performance

by KBeyer0419 on 1/5/12Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

I was blown away by the acting in this musical. Miss Anna sounds like an even better Julie Andrews. There were 10 of us who went to the show and we could not stop talking about it. Beautiful story and believable acting- who can ask for anything more then that. Great job!

    The King and I

by Thestefsmom on 1/5/12Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

The play was very good, better than most I have seen at the Walnut. The only thing worth noting is that the second act, we could not hear what the king was saying on his death bed. This portion was about 15 minutes and that really took away from the play. The first Act was excellent.

KING and I not worth the money.

by Ava712 on 1/2/12Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

I thought this version of the play was mediocre and definitely not as grand as the movie. The costumes were cheap looking and the woman who played the lead a bit screechy and the man who played the King has zero charisma. Was very disappointed. And on top of that the theatre was freezing. The woman next to me left right in the middle of the play because she was so cold!
