    TECH: 10 ACTING: 3

by Christie B on 1/1/19Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

Everything technical was great - except for the Techies who came out onstage before the show started but after curtain time (show started at 2:08pm - 8 minutes late) and were chatting and pointing to the floor. Highly unprofessional. Their scene shift at Intermission was the slowest I have ever seen. They obviously don't care or have much experience. Acting was forced, all over the place. Vocals too. Rudolpho was an amateur and annoying - went for the cheap laughs and needed developed choreo. Every performance was disappointingly flat. Trunchbull held "her" own and created a character arc, it was refreshing. Mr Wormwood had fun moments, even if they were high-school level at times... e stood out from the rest. Couldn't understand 75% of what Matilda said, her accent needed more coaching. Kids were cute, but it was obvious they were sloppily rehearsed. Spoiler alert: no swings nor scooters (at least the Curtain Call could've had moments of scooters) Will NOT return to this Theatre. Paid $415 for 3 tickets and did NOT get my money's worth. Had high hopes for this Theater, but it's reputation far exceeds its abilities.....

    Extraordinary

by Gran A on 1/1/19Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

After a life time of taking children and Grandchildren to shows, this was by far the best. We were predisposed to enjoy this wonderful story, but great characters were filled with perfectly matched and outstanding actors. Amazing children. Loved this show. A lifetime memorable. Five stars plus.

    We loved it!

    by L. B. on 12/30/18Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

Very funny. My kids three kids (age 15, 7 & 5) each loved it. I wish these types of events were more financially accessible to all families.

    matilda in philladelphia

by sc on 12/30/18Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

This show was awesome, all the actors did a great job, but when the actor who played Miss Trunchbull was performing "When you throw the hammer for your country" well I have never laughed so hard in my life! The show was funny and touching. Just a great time!

    Made me laugh and cry

by BmansDad on 12/25/18Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

I am a 57 year old male. When I purchased the tickets for my family, I thought I was buying them for them. After attending, however, I found that it was for me. A story surrounding rejection and bullying, my youth emerged from within me in a way I totally did not expect as I was bullied as a child by my peers and told how stupid I was. Now, most people would describe me as a very successful. While some of the spoken word were, at times, hard to understand because of the accent of the lead child actress, I found myself engulfed by the story and its message. Needless to say, I truly enjoyed the performance.

    Seats Too Small

by Jim on 12/24/18Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

The theater is beautiful. I believe it's the oldest in the United States because the seats are so small they would only fit a person born two hundred years ago. I am 6'6", 260 pounds. Long legs. Sat down and legs would not fit without spreading out to the limit of the seats in front. Then two of the largest ladies in the City of Philadelphia came in and sat to my left and right. It was torture. Left after the intermission.
