About

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".

Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.

"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"

Throughout their career, VV has drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like Theatre of Living Arts, the Depot and Summit to capacity.

This was by far the best concert I have ever attended. Glad to see he is back performing. Amazing vocals and the light show was insane! Thank you!!!

  • Great show Awful Venue

by Em on 4/12/23House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

VV put on an AMAZING show as expected. House of Blues though, please stop overselling shows! Whatever your ticket cap is, that many people DON’T safely fit in the venue. We got there at doors not expecting to be near the front but expecting at least some room to breathe but even in the outskirts of the main floor it was impossible to navigate to go to the bar, bathroom, or merch. Do better house of blues!

  • Ville is in Top Form

by Trevor on 4/12/23House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Ville was amazing as always. The backing band was mediocre at best and could be described more as some guys than a backing band. Would recommend in a heartbreak for any Valo fans. It was an even mix between Neon Noir tracks and HIM tracks. Wish the HIM tracks would have been more than just singles and more deep album tracks.

  • Exceeded Expectations

by Mandy on 4/12/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Vocal range, stage presence, and audience inclusion did not disappoint. Was very pleased that HIM songs were included in the set list. Made for a great evening. Didn't cut show time short, gave a great performance and the ticket prices were a steal.

  • Stellar show

by WEcbus on 4/11/23Bogart's - CincinnatiRating: 5 out of 5

The opening band was frickin amazing. Ville sounded so good. He still has a killer voice. The venue has sucky muddy sound but nothing bands can do about that. This was a beautiful blend of nostalgia and spotlighting the very worthwhile new album.

  • Fantastic concert!

    by CindyS on 4/9/23Saint Andrew's Hall - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I loved this concert so much. Ville Valo is a gem in the music industry, and im so happy he is putting out music again. The venue was a bit challenging for me, as we had general admission tickets, arrived before the venue opened, and still were in the back. Im 5'3" so it was difficult to see the artists. I hope next time he plays a larger venue (or maybe i will be smart and upgrade my ticket to a balcony seat!) All in all, it was a wonderful night to see one of my favorite artists

  • The greatest experience ever!

by Cassiana Bowling on 4/8/23House of Blues Cleveland - ClevelandRating: 5 out of 5

Ive been to many shows but seeing Ville Valo for the first time in my life was one of the best experiences that I could ever have!!! I saw him Imin Cleveland and ever since I was 13 (I'm 31 now) I've always wanted to see him in concert. He really connects with the crowd and I got a couple smiles and direct eye contact from him. His music has saved me more times than I can count as a teen and even to this day. I felt seen, I felt safe. Thank you for the best night ever.

  • Nostalgic

by bmbmetal on 4/8/23Roxian Theatre - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Along with all the new songs mixed with his HIM music. Flowed great. And was an amazing show

  • It was only good for the nostalgia.

by Anon on 4/8/23Roxian Theatre - PittsburghRating: 2 out of 5

He really seemed to not want to be there. He stood in one spot in the right center of the stage and stared at the people on the right side of the pit the entire time. My husband and I were right up front against the fence but because we were on the left center of the stage, we watched his back the whole time. It’s not worth the time or money.

  • The legend returns

    by Sic16420 on 4/8/23Roxian Theatre - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Him was one of my favorite bands growing up and this show was amazing. The fact that every other song was from HIM made this one of the best shows I've seen since the world ended (pandemic). Easily in my top 5 shows I've ever seen and my son had a great time as well. Definitely would love to see this band again and again
