About

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".

Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.

"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"

Throughout their career, VV has drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like Theatre of Living Arts, the Depot and Summit to capacity.

  • Dommin Dominates

    by frantic1 on 5/4/10Center Stage - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

HIM was okay. I thought Ville's voice was off and he was not that into it. They were okay but I really loved Dommin and We are the Fallen . In fact I left before HIM finished their set to go meet Dommin at the merch table. This was my 2nd time seeing HIM and I like them but their live music is not as good as the studio recording. I didn't care for Drive A. The band plays well but the singer needs some work. He tries too hard to connect with the audience and doesn't and his use of profanity just seemsfor the sake of it and too be cool. He wasn't.

  • It was great!

This was my first HIM concert and it was amazing. I wasn't fond of Drive A but Dommin and We are the Fallen were much better. HIM was great. They sounded great, Mige and Ville were complete goofballs. Overall I had a wonderful time and if I wasn't singing I laughing about something.

  • Disappointed

by CWhitG on 5/4/10Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

I am from the Atlanta area. I have seen HIM perform several times; they have been one of my favorite bands for years. In 2003 we flew to Chicago to see them; in 2004 NYC; in 2005 Los Angeles; plus seen them 3 times in Atlanta. We've also met them a couple of times; being with the band in their dressing room after the HOB Chicago show was amazing, and they were also cool in NYC. It's obvious we've been very dedicated fans, spending alot of money to see them!! HOWEVER--last night's show was a big disappointment to me. If Ville would've sang more rather than talked, I'd be happier than I am right now. People threw books and other things on stage, and he would talk, talk, talk about those books. A guy infront of me was yelling "shut up and sing"---at first I thought he was being rude, but hey...I have to agree with him after all! My friend and I debated on whether Ville was on something or honestly just bored, being that the tour is almost over. Also, after the show, we went down to their tour bus, hoping to speak to them once again. There was only a handful of people out there waiting, by the way. A white van pulls up and they all get out and bolt to the bus, talking to NO fans. I know they have to be in Myrtle Beach today (May 4), BUT, give me a break....at least say something. On a positive note, We Are The Falling were amazing. That chick really knows how to sing.

  • Proud of HIM:)

    by aleksandra1669 on 5/4/10Center stage - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Just came back from their concert in Atlanta, GA and have to admit that I feel veerryy satisfied. Guys did a great job pumping the audience up, Ville's singing was classic, even though a couple times I thought one couldn't hear it completely clear. The setlist had both new and old material in it, and even though I find the older stuff more appealing, they made everything sound great. Overall just feeling very happy that I got to go, finally, after planing to do so for several years and ended up seeing and hearing one of my favorite bands perform like that. Besides HIM, Dommin came out to be a very pleasant surprise. Never heard of them before, but whoever their leadsinger is , he is doing a great job, very impressive.

  • HIM/DOMMIN Orlando House of Blues...PHENOMINAL!!!!

by JerseyDoll on 5/3/10House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

After much time HIM finally returned back to the states and let me add that the wait was well worth it. Accompanied by Drive A, We are the Fallen and Dommin the event was phenominal. The band that stood out the most however was none other than, the dark rock outfit known as Dommin. Their debut album Love is gone is exquisite, but when u actually hear the band live, you are just mesmorized by how amazing the vocals of Kris Dommin are. CAPTIVATING to say the least. I would definitley like to see Dommin stick around and perform with HIM at another time. ALL around spectacular show.

  • Show Rocked

by Drumink on 5/3/10House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

The Band sounded Great as usual !!! They are an amazing band !!!Sound was not loud enough though . Also Ville needs to show us his tatoos some time ,been to 3 HIM shows and never seen his tatoos. They also should meet their fans after the show .Show some respect to the people paying your bills .Still my fave band of all time tied with RUSH .HOB is the best venue in town for concerts ,but these early shows have to go .They do it so they can reopen the club for ravers and get twice the income . A show thats over by 11pm is not a Show in my book !!!People can't go to or don't want to go to a show At 6pm . other than that HOB staff is very respectful and nice and I always have a good time there !!!

  • Brilliance

by Nicolaii on 5/3/10House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

The band put on quite a good show. Sound-wise the band seemed to be too loud, however, this depended on location and was a result of the House of Blues more than anything. The vocals were very impressive from Ville (the lead singer), however the band didn't seem to move around as much as when I last saw them in 2005 for the Dark Light Tour. This could be due to the fact that they've been touring for the last 5 months, or the just weren't as into it -Who knows? Regardless, they only played 3 songs from the newest alubm, Screamworks, and sadly, no songs from the Deep Shadows, Brilliant Highlights album, but they encore/ended with a cover of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell". Always a perfect ending!

  • Fantastic...

Well done concert- even the opening bands were not that bad. Sound quality wasn't horrible either. Extremely impressed and the bartenders were friendly and fast to serve. Would highly recommend again.

  • HIM was amazing

by Bresus on 5/3/10House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

HIM was amazing as usual, the opening bands were surprisingly entertaining also. Packed as usual, but the pit was a lot more controlled than it used to be, glad it was!

  • Dommin!!

by pris737 on 5/3/10House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

I wasn't pleased with Drive A, if anything I was annoyed by them!! They cursed way too much and promoted crowd surfing. We are the fallen band wasn't good at all. The female vocalist has an amazing voice, but I was barely able to hear it because the band/instruments were overpowering her voice. They instruments were too distorted too, the mix of the instruments was unpleasant. The band I enjoyed the MOST was Dommin. They had a nice, unique touch to there music. The style of the music and the way it flowed was pleasant. I loved the keyboardist!! All the instruments flowed perfectly well and I was able to hear/enjoy the singers voice. I would actually pay to see them again. Overall I was forced to go to the concert because my boyfriend really wanted to see HIM. In my opinion I could care less for the band...I don't like the way the sing or play music. The singer is a little creepy too. The only person I enjoyed in the band was the guitarist with dreadlocks. He plays very well and he entertained me the most. I wouldn't pay to see HIM again, although my boyfriend will. But out of all of the bands, even HIM...I like DOMMIN the most!!!

HIM played a wonderful long set. Unfortunately, there was nothing from Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights, but they hit tracks from every other album.

by Poisongirl13 on 5/3/10House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

the show was absolutely amazing. all of the band members from the opening acts hung out afterward. HIM was just as good if not better than ever. This is my 2nd HIM show, and definitely not my last.
