About

In the early 1960s, a young woman disfigured by a childhood accident travels across the South in search of a televangelist’s healing miracle. On her journey, Violet meets two young soldiers who help her learn about courage, beauty and her own self-worth. Set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights era, Violet’s odyssey opens her eyes to the realities of racism and segregation. With a dynamic score of bluegrass, gospel, country and rock, Violet features a distinctly American musical voice. Tony-nominated director Jeff Calhoun (Broadway’s Newsies) directs this story of love, hope and healing.

    Violet

by Sofabed on 2/9/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

Advance ads misleading re type of music which I absolutely deplore/dislike; plot pretty sappy; audience talked and commented all through with no control by theater. The only redeeming feature is that the honorable, ethical black guy ended up with the white woman. It is that believable-- in the 1960s, 1970s south???

Violet was engaging and thought provoking

by Anonymous on 2/4/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

The story line of 'Violet' was close to home for this baby boomer. An interesting setting to explore civil rights and questions of individual identity and self-esteem. The acting and singing was superb and topped off with a creative and versatile set.

    Good solid performance.

Although it started out slow, Violet grew on you after awhile. The music and performances were very good, and the staging very creative. The plot was a bit of a stretch at times. Worth seeing.

    "Violet" is a Winner!

by Aulaea on 1/28/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

We loved the production of "Violet." We have only praise for it. The production was tight. The music, voices, acting, staging and set design were wonderful. I could easily see it playing Off Broadway. We didn't know this ahead of time, but as it turns out, my husband knew and studied with Doris Betts, on whose short story, "The Ugliest Pilgrim," the play is based. If you feel like it, read the short story - which is wonderful. It may help you appreciate the "book" - the adaptation to the stage - which was fantastic. Congratulations to Ford's Theatre for a truly wonderful production.

Very well done. The performers had good strong voices and the orchestra did not drown out the singing.
