I felt like last Thursday nights show was something really special, nostalgic in the best of ways, enjoyable musically, and fun as hell, we danced and sang our asses off. The band members all flew in from various parts of the world (Bassist, Brian Ritchie flew in from Australia) for this make up show of the rained out Central Park show in September. They opened with some obscure songs from their unpopular sophomore album "Hallowed Ground" but this was a treat for die hard fans. A few more songs later they declared they were "going to have some fun" and played their self titled debut album in it's entirety giving EVERYONE what they wanted. The Horns of Dilemma supported on several songs- "Black Girls" amongst others. A highlight was when the band took a break while Gordon Gano recited a powerful reading of Lou Reed's "Like A Possum" lyrics as if he were a deranged carny spewing junkie gospel. Before long they played "Country Death Song" a very dark song about a father who pushes his daughter into a well before ultimately committing suicide. Gano admitted he has no idea why this song is often requested and apparently a fan favorite. At the end of the song he said that since they were already in D-Minor (I believe)
that they would play their other song that happens to be in D-Minor "Color Me Once" off of the The Crow motion picture soundtrack from. A few songs later found them ending with another sing along "American Music" The band played with tremendous energy, solidified by new drummer Brian Viglione of The Dresden Dolls, who filled in more than adequately drumming standing up, while providing good backing vocals. It could be a long time before the Violent Femmes play stateside again. I got the sense that this show was one for the history books.
