About

Vince Staples on Tour

Ice Cube. Snoop. Tupac. Kendrick. No roll call of the best L.A. MCs is complete without those names, and if you talk to discerning hip-hop heads today, they'll tell you Vince Staples deserves to be the next entry on that lofty list. The Compton-born rapper and former member of the notorious Crips gang first surfaced in the early 2010s as a satellite player in the ever-expansive Odd Future universe, turning up on a couple of tracks by resident OF eccentric Earl Sweatshirt. Following a collaborative mixtape with producer Mac Miller, Stolen Youth, in 2013, Staples signed on with legendary rap imprint Def Jam Recordings and dropped his debut EP, Hell Can Wait, the following year. With its siren-like synth squeals and dry, chiseled beat, the EP's lead single "Blue Suede" thrust a wider audience into Staples' grim streetscapes and ice-cold commentaries on the harsh realities of thug life. He ramped up the intensity on his critically acclaimed 2015 double album, Summertime ‘06, where the stark, nocturnal production on tracks like "Norf Norf" and "Señorita" amplified the desperation and despair in Staples' rhymes. But his guest appearance on the electro-adrenalized Gorillaz track "Ascension" betrayed a willingness to step outside the confines of minimalist street rap. Though it features cameos from peers like Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky, Staples' bold 2017 album Big Fish Theory tapped the beatmaking expertise of SOPHIE, Flume and Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver), while guest vocals from Damon Albarn and Kilo Kish introduced a melodic levity. Staples' 2018 release FM! further entrenched his reputation as one of the most ambitious, creatively restless forces in modern hip-hop, with the rapper organizing the songs around a radio-show framework — "hosted" by famed L.A. on-air personality Big Boy — that reinforces the dial-spinning eclecticism of Staples' ever-evolving musical aesthetic.

by Elvin G on 2/24/19Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

What a show! Hammerstein is a great venue, and Vince is one of the best rappers out right now. Drinks are pricey, security is quick, but standing almost anywhere there's a good view of the stage.

    Present

by Nin on 2/24/19Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

I was pretty hesitant to go here due to the one or two reviews about how small and cramped the Herstein ballroom was however there was plenty of space on the balcony and the process to get in was easy enough! After Buddy’s performance Vince came on around 9:45. SVince never fails to give an excellent performance keeping the crowd active and playing songs from all albums.

by OgAlex on 3/11/17Center Stage Theater - Atlanta

Ive been to his show before but this time it just seemed like he was either in his head or didnt really want to be here. there was no energy from him in the performance. I would have had a better time just saving my money and listening to him on the radio

    The Life Aquatic

    by Bayareaconcertgoer415 on 2/28/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

This was my second Vince Staples show. Going into the venue I had certain expectations about the performance, I knew he would bring a certain energy out of the crowd, but what truly surprised me this time around was the incredible Wes Anderson inspired visual stage production, and the array of lights that came with it.

great show! played all the stuff i could think of that i wanted to hear from "summertime 06" and "proma donna". charismatic rapping, cool visual thing in the background. also, great opener in kilo kish, and i assume she was doing the backup vocals from offstage for the vince staples songs that she was a guest vocalist on? that was cool too.

AMAZING SHOW!! He engaged with the crowd really well and made it an enjoyable experience. I bought meet and greet, and I was honestly afraid to meet him.. but that all changed as soon as he walked out. he actedlike a normal guy. he laughed and joked with us and was very easy to talk too!
