About

Vince Staples on Tour

Ice Cube. Snoop. Tupac. Kendrick. No roll call of the best L.A. MCs is complete without those names, and if you talk to discerning hip-hop heads today, they'll tell you Vince Staples deserves to be the next entry on that lofty list. The Compton-born rapper and former member of the notorious Crips gang first surfaced in the early 2010s as a satellite player in the ever-expansive Odd Future universe, turning up on a couple of tracks by resident OF eccentric Earl Sweatshirt. Following a collaborative mixtape with producer Mac Miller, Stolen Youth, in 2013, Staples signed on with legendary rap imprint Def Jam Recordings and dropped his debut EP, Hell Can Wait, the following year. With its siren-like synth squeals and dry, chiseled beat, the EP's lead single "Blue Suede" thrust a wider audience into Staples' grim streetscapes and ice-cold commentaries on the harsh realities of thug life. He ramped up the intensity on his critically acclaimed 2015 double album, Summertime ‘06, where the stark, nocturnal production on tracks like "Norf Norf" and "Señorita" amplified the desperation and despair in Staples' rhymes. But his guest appearance on the electro-adrenalized Gorillaz track "Ascension" betrayed a willingness to step outside the confines of minimalist street rap. Though it features cameos from peers like Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky, Staples' bold 2017 album Big Fish Theory tapped the beatmaking expertise of SOPHIE, Flume and Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver), while guest vocals from Damon Albarn and Kilo Kish introduced a melodic levity. Staples' 2018 release FM! further entrenched his reputation as one of the most ambitious, creatively restless forces in modern hip-hop, with the rapper organizing the songs around a radio-show framework — "hosted" by famed L.A. on-air personality Big Boy — that reinforces the dial-spinning eclecticism of Staples' ever-evolving musical aesthetic.

    Incredible live

    by Beccaburger on 9/22/19

I was so impressed by his love performance. His voice is incredible live. Sounds better than the album live which is rare for most rappers. I wish I could have seen him again. I’m still high from how lit this concert was. Vince—baby—come back to SLC!

He was exactly what I was expecting - no frills, just rap. Tons of energy.

    Explosive!!

by siddesai219 on 3/13/19Bogart's presented by Cricket Wireless - Cincinnati

This was the first concert I’ve ever been to and it was absolutely insane! The energy was absolutely wild and I had so much fun. Vince did an incredible job with the performance and I was genuinely surprised with JPEG Mafia as the opener and I’m definitely a fan now. Also have to say, smaller venues I think I much better and more exhilarating than larger venues. Just much more personal.

    Crabs in a bucket

by lcpl-david on 3/5/19Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Sold out show. Main floor and mezzanine were both packed and the pit was nearly impossible to get into. JPEGMAFIA put on an exciting set, but I'm admittedly unfamiliar with his music. Energy was through the rood, though and his fans were going crazy. There was a huge line to meet him that started at his second to last song and lasted well into Vince's set. Seems like a cool dude. Vince did a nice combination of new and old material and had an interesting backing video based on this tour being for a DVD. Aside from wanting the show to be longer and not getting through the doors until almost 10, it was worth every penny.

    Just...wow

by T. on 3/5/19Newport Music Hall - Columbus

I don’t usually go out much but I was excited to see one of my favorite artists perform live. And the show exceeded my expectations, from being introduced to Katori Walkers music, to really experiencing JPEG Mafias energy, it was definitely a night to remember. And the whole mood of the room was electric when Vince Staples took the stage. Mosh pits, crowd surfing, drinks flying, and everything you would expect from an incredible concert was there that night plus more. Couldn’t have asked for a better night and will remember this night.
