Vanderbilt Commodores at Vanderbilt Stadium

Nashville, Tennessee, is home to one of the most prestigious schools in the South, as well as one of the more competitive programs in the Southeastern Conference: The Vanderbilt Commodores. The Commodores play on campus at Vanderbilt Stadium, which seats 40,550 and originally opened as Dudley Field in 1922 before being almost completely rebuilt in 1981. They are coached by Derek Mason, who has led the Commodores to bowl appearances in 2016 and 2018 after replacing James Franklin before the 2014 season.

Vanderbilt Commodores Football History

Both VU's name and its athletic program's nickname pay tribute to railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, who made the initial $1 million endowment for the school in 1873. Vanderbilt University first fielded a football team in 1890, and won 11 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association and two Southern Conference titles before joining the SEC as a charter member in 1932. The Commodores were a powerhouse in Southern football in the early 20th century, led by coach Dan McGugin from 1904 to 1917 and from 1919 to 1934. Vanderbilt University is the only private school in the Southeastern Conference, and also has the smallest enrollment, but has held its own on the field and off of it. James Franklin's run as head coach from 2011 to 2013 saw Vanderbilt win nine games in a season twice in a row for the first time in their history, in 2012 and 2013, before Franklin left to become the head coach at Penn State.

Vanderbilt has many fierce rivalries, including fellow SEC East foes Georgia and Kentucky, as well as inter-divisional rival Ole Miss. The Commodores' rivalry against the Tennessee Volunteers dates to 1892, and with victories over the Vols in 2016, 2017 and 2018, Vanderbilt achieved their longest winning streak against UT since the 1920s. Vanderbilt also once had a spirited rivalry against Sewanee, Many notable NFL players have played for the Commodores, including veteran quarterback Jay Cutler, Houston Texans linebacker Zach Cunningham and wide receivers Earl Bennent and Jordan Matthews.

    Stadium is less than perfect

by Sgam76 on 11/24/15Vanderbilt Univ Vanderbilt Stadium - Nashville

I should start by saying that the Vanderbilt folks themselves were very nice, and the facility was clean. But the stadium itself is very dated. Seats are the lowest I've ever seen (we're all 6-footers, and we had to curl out legs under the seats), and there are only half as many aisles up to seats as there should be. Our seats were in the middle of a section, and we had to essentially climb over roughly 20 people to get to them--no other way to accomplish it. Some money for renovations to the seating would be well-spent.

    SEC Football

by Govette on 9/15/15Vanderbilt Univ Vanderbilt Stadium - Nashville

Vanderbilt Stadium is a wonderful facility that offers top notch Southeastern Conference football fight here in Nashville. Win or lose who could ask for more. If nothing else go to spy on all the great SEC teams. Its a great place to spend an afternoon in the fall watching these talented athletes without the four hour drive. Anchor down and Go Vandy!

Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Ole Miss Rebels Football

by Johnfss on 9/11/14LP Field - Nashville

For some reason, the LP Field crew did not open all of the gates. It took me and my friend about 45 minutes to get into the stadium. It had nothing to do with the NFL bag policy. I was in the upper level, same as when I attend Titans games as well. The gates that lead to the upper sections were simply not open, as well as other gates that were not open. We missed a significant part of the first quarter of action.

Major logistical problems and a lousy game

    by Titans309Fan on 9/10/14LP Field - Nashville

I go to all Titans games and have been to several Music City Bowls, so I have a good idea on what to expect at LP Field. Having only 4 sets of gates open and having only 2 or 3 workers manage each gate is inexcusable. Luckily I went in an hour and a half before kickoff, but too many of my fellow fans were stuck outside for the whole first quarter due to a lack of workers. When I went to the upper deck, I was very surprised that every concession stand was closed but one. There should have been at least three open, if not most of them. Vanderbilt also had one their worst games ever, which made the whole game feel like a waste of time and money.
