Vancouver Canucks History

The Vancouver Canucks started play in 1970, entering the league along with the Buffalo Sabres. Vancouver has been to the Stanley Cup Final on three occasions, though they lost to the New York Islanders in 1982, the New York Rangers in 1994 and the Boston Bruins in 2011.

Despite humble beginnings, the Canucks continued to develop. With the arrival of three key players — Captain Trevor Linden, netminder Kirk McLean, and "the Russian Rocket" Pavel Bure, the Canucks had a winning Playoff run season — making it to the 1994 finals.

The Canucks continued to acquire superstars like Alexander Mogilny and Markus Näslund, and while the following years meant a series of losses, it allowed for the team to draft Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who would go on to lead the Canucks to Presidents' Trophies in back-to-back seasons in 2010-11 and 2011-12, as well as their finals appearance in 2011.

Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena

The Vancouver Canucks play their home games at the 475,000-square foot Rogers Arena, which also played host to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games where Sidney Crosby scored the “Golden Goal.” A staple of downtown Vancouver, the Canucks played their first game at the arena on October 9, 1995. Other notable events that have taken place at the arena include the 1998 NHL All-Star Game, 2019 NHL Entry Draft, and in October 2002 when Queen Elizabeth II dropped the ceremonial first puck during an NHL exhibition game between the Canucks and San Jose Sharks. Additionally, the arena played host to Games 1, 2, 5, and 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.

The Vancouver Canucks’ 2023–24 regular season kicks off in October at home as the Canucks face off against the Edmonton Oilers. The Canucks play their final game of the regular season at Canada Life Centre against Western Conference opponents the Winnipeg Jets. Here’s a list of key games to keep an eye on:

    Canucks Open Practice

    If you're not a big fan of the Canucks/Hockey, this event may have seemed a bit boring. However, as a fan it was fun to see the Canucks practice and the fan involvement. I think there should have been more free giveaways to everyone there. This is probably the only Canucks event that some people could afford to go to so I think they should have done a bit more for the people in attendance. It was fun though, and I would probably go again.

    Grest game...good venue! I found lots of Sabres fans to hang out with...fans were great, no one hassled us. Only problem...we lost the game 3-2.

    Awesome Canucks Superskills

    Second year I've attended this event and found it very exciting and great family entertainment. A great way to expose kids to the Canucks without having the huge ticket price. Extra special because the money goes towards the Canucks for Kids charities. It is so wonderful to see the guys bring out their children and great to see them interact with each other and the fans in a relaxed atmosphere. I live on Vancouver Island and 50% of the people on the ferry going back to Nanaimo were Canuck fans returning from the event.

    Skills competition Canucks

    We were pleased overall, but very very dissappointed about the seemingly ridiculous excuse that the Stanley Cup was lost in transit. This was quite a silly excuse as the Cup travels with at least one attendant . The main reason our family of five attended was to get a photo with the Stanley Cup , therefore this was a big dissappointment. ONe of the Hosts named Rodger an elderly man of about 60 was extremely rude to 2 of our youngest children when he impolitely asked them not to stand in the aisle, they were simply walking down to ice level. THX

    We took our son and his best friend, they sat in the first row and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We were pleasantly surprised that a few players signed autographs before and after the competition. Tanner Glass was a gem being so patient and signing so many autographs!

    Fans are sore winners

    Given the game was a blowout--mind you with a third string goalie--the fans showed no class and even told me to take off my jersey and "you suck." Classless. Probably won't be going back to a game there again.

    I am a lifelong fan of the Canucks so there is no bad game watching the Canucks, just losses and wins. I specifically went to this game to see Evander Kane. He had 3 great opportunities to score however Luongo held his ground each time. I think Atlanta is very fortunate to have Evander. He's going to develop into a solid first line performer in another year or two.
