Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome
Each winter, San Antonio, Texas, hosts two of the premier teams in the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences in the Alamo Bowl. Since the game's inception, the Alamo Bowl has been played at the Alamodome, which opened in 1993 and has a current capacity of 64,000. Since 2010, the Alamo Bowl has pitted the second-choice Pac-12 team against the second-choice Big 12 team, leading to intriguing matchups and classic competitions.
Valero Alamo Bowl History
The first Alamo Bowl was played on December 31, 1993, when the California Golden Bears trounced the Iowa Hawkeyes, 37-3. Originally created with tie-ins to the Pac-10 conference and the Southwest Conference, a lack of eligible SWC schools in the game's inaugural season led to the entire conference's demise in 1995 and a longtime partnership with the Big Ten. The now-defunct Builders Square hardware chain was the titular sponsor of the Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, with Sylvania and MasterCard also sponsoring the game before an unsponsored 2006 bowl and Valero's current sponsorship since 2007.
There have been many memorable moments in the Alamo Bowl's history. In 2005, the Michigan Wolverines almost pulled off a miracle against Nebraska, but their eight-lateral final play was stopped at the Cornhusker 16-yard line, leading to a 32-28 Nebraska victory. In 2011, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III led Baylor to a 67-56 victory over Washington, in what remains the highest-scoring bowl game to end in regulation. The January 2016 Alamo Bowl featured a comeback for the ages when TCU overcame a 31-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Oregon in triple-overtime, 47-41. In December 2017, TCU kicked a 4th quarter field goal to squeak past Stanford, 39-37, and the 2018 contest featured No. 12 Washington State holding on against an upstart Iowa State team, beating the No. 25 Cyclones, 28-26.
It was Wonderful and fun have a great time in the bowl game
Everything was Right on time and it was a quick entrance with no problems and everyone was positive and most of all I had great seats Thanks to TICKETMASTER I just wanna say thank you
Good service. My first time expeeience was helpful.
The Alamobowl was excellent! I appreciated the info prior to the game regarding parking. I parked at one of the shuttle lots and rode the shuttle straight to the entrance. After the game, I did not have to wait on the shuttle van. It was there and was back to my car within 15 min. Regarding the game, I wish the Alamodome had state of the art jumbo-trons. When you are in the upper decks, it would be nice to have been able to see replay video better than just the 2 small video boards in the corners of the dome. Overall, I had a great time! Thank you San Antonio!
It was hard to compare to last years game but it just didn't have the same feel for me. seemed to have a lot less things between game and before game. No games or texting games this year
Great arena; needs some sound system upgrades. Concessions were good, staff was helpful and professional. Getting inside was a long wait.
Good game in the first half. The pregame was giod.
Excellent game and great fam involvement! Regardless os who is playing, it has become an annual event with my wife and me. Looking forward to next year.
It's always a good time at college bowl games. ..not always a good game. But you can't beat the atmospheric and San Antonio is amazing.
First and hopefully last time I will have to go to the Alamodome. I have been to hundreds of concerts, college and professional games, all types of events worldwide and have NEVER been in a venue that bad. It was dark, half of the corridor lights were unlit. The concession stands were grossly understaffed and staff that was there was terribly inefficient. People waited in 30-45minute lines for food/drinks...time wasted. It was dirty, everywhere. The policemen working outside of the Alamodome were very rude.I simply cannot imagine how a Company like Valero could put there name on something so barely and so badly put together. It was almost as if the venue was not notified that there would be a big game that evening. Yes, I know it was horrible weather...cold and rainy...but understand that this had nothing to do with my assessment. If all reviews come in like mine, please do not assume everyone was unhappy because of the weather.
Awesomeness!! Loved it!!!!!!!!!!! So much SPIRIT going on!!!!!
The game was beyond incredible, (Go Frogs!) however the stadium & its staff were unacceptable. Lines were long & staff did not moving swiftly in taking or providing orders; 1 gentleman spent an entire quarter of the game trying to get food for his family. If your team makes this bowl, make sure you're there early to stock up on your concessions.
Game kept me on the edge of my seat! TCU smashed the ducks out the water!
The football ball was great but... 1. Alamodome video board is smaller than my TV at home 2. Almost no replays during game. But they did run self promoting adds 3. sound system is garbled (think of Charlie Brown's teacher) 4. Understaffed at security check-in and concessions 5. Had to buy tickets through 3rd party resellers which means no souvenir ticket stub The good... 1. San Antonio. nuff said ;) 2. You can walk to the Alamodome from any river-walk hotel
What a milestone to have been a part of such an awesome event. This game was hands down, the best Bowl game of the year! Yes better than the championship game and it hasn't been played yet. I would make a Vegas bet that its not going to outdo this game. I hope you guys alert your members when the next year tickets go on sale. I'm all in!!
The TCU vs Oregon game was the BEST Bowl game of the season! Thank you Valero AlamoBowl for making this Bowl season so great!
The Alamo Bowl is a pretty good bowl atmosphere. The riverwalk area has plenty of resturaunts, a mall, and is close proximity to the Alamodome. The walk from the host hotels (and other surrounding hotels in the area) was a 10-15 minute scenic walk. The fan zone needed a few more activities but had great food and music.
First, the Game. Holy cow, what an exciting game. Worth every penny just for what the two teams did on the field (largest comeback ever, 3 OT!). The one positive thing I can say about the facility is that it has good sight lines. It's smaller than your super big modern NFL stadiums, so it gives it a little more intimate feel. However.... The Alamodome facility itself is horribly outdated. The food was bad, with very few choices, especially in the upper deck where you had to wait 45 minutes in line for a barely warm hot dog. Same with the beer. Great if you like Bud or Bud Light, but don't expect anything of the craft variety. There were not nearly enough vendors to serve the capacity crowd that was there (another 45-55 minutes for a T-shirt). Given the number of events they host yearly, I doubt anyone wants to sink money into upgrading/expanding, but it is sorely neeeded
I liked the Alamodome venue overall. It was my first trim to SanAntonio and to the Alamo Bowl. The game turned out great with 2 top 15 teams going at it. What I was disappointed with is that we had to stand outside in the rain and cold until 2 hours before kickoff. It was very rainy and uncomfortable and I thought that the Alamodome management could have let us in much sooner considering the weather. At the Cotton bowl - ATT stadium 2 days earlier the stadium was open practically 8 hours prior to game time.
What an exciting game. Had a blast, would recommend doing this again!
