Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome

Each winter, San Antonio, Texas, hosts two of the premier teams in the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences in the Alamo Bowl. Since the game's inception, the Alamo Bowl has been played at the Alamodome, which opened in 1993 and has a current capacity of 64,000. Since 2010, the Alamo Bowl has pitted the second-choice Pac-12 team against the second-choice Big 12 team, leading to intriguing matchups and classic competitions.

Valero Alamo Bowl History

The first Alamo Bowl was played on December 31, 1993, when the California Golden Bears trounced the Iowa Hawkeyes, 37-3. Originally created with tie-ins to the Pac-10 conference and the Southwest Conference, a lack of eligible SWC schools in the game's inaugural season led to the entire conference's demise in 1995 and a longtime partnership with the Big Ten. The now-defunct Builders Square hardware chain was the titular sponsor of the Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, with Sylvania and MasterCard also sponsoring the game before an unsponsored 2006 bowl and Valero's current sponsorship since 2007.

There have been many memorable moments in the Alamo Bowl's history. In 2005, the Michigan Wolverines almost pulled off a miracle against Nebraska, but their eight-lateral final play was stopped at the Cornhusker 16-yard line, leading to a 32-28 Nebraska victory. In 2011, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III led Baylor to a 67-56 victory over Washington, in what remains the highest-scoring bowl game to end in regulation. The January 2016 Alamo Bowl featured a comeback for the ages when TCU overcame a 31-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Oregon in triple-overtime, 47-41. In December 2017, TCU kicked a 4th quarter field goal to squeak past Stanford, 39-37, and the 2018 contest featured No. 12 Washington State holding on against an upstart Iowa State team, beating the No. 25 Cyclones, 28-26.

  • Great facility Poor drink and food offering

by Okie on 12/31/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

The facility and game were outstanding. The food and drink offerings were poor. The "supposed"Nathan hot dog was poor and only warm. Not sure it was even cooked. At least one of the condiment offerings were empty. Even though signage listed 7 drink offerings only 2 were available. All of this was before halftime.

  • Had a great time, but disappointed in wait times for food

by Gum & Gummer on 1/7/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

Stood in line forever to get sodas & popcorn, and missed much of the game. I did this twice at very different times, but it didn’t matter. Process was very inefficient and slow. Next time we will plan on not getting anything, so we can all watch the event.

The city of San Antonio did a great job of showing its great hospitality during the week of the game

  • Subpar experience

by Lee on 1/1/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

I thought the event was going to be an exciting close game, but turned out to be a long drawn out game for the home team.

  • Football in a dump

    by Mike T on 1/1/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 2 out of 5

Place was a dump. Not handicap friendly. Concessions ɓland. Scoreboards very small and hard to read. Very little parking

  • Annoying but OK

by Jeffkenntx on 1/1/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

Parking sucked. I looked at the website for the Alamodome for parking and really found no information regarding it. They mentioned event parking but I couldn’t find where to get a parking ticket. I am mobility impaired and couldn’t even park in that lot without an special parking pass. I would up parking in the neighborhood. Walking that distance was not fun!

  • Great event

    by Rob P on 1/1/23Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time at the Valero Alamo Bowl. Easy experience from looking for tickets until we left the venue. No issues what so ever.

  • OU Vs OU

by The Wicked One on 7/13/22Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Had a blast. Great seat! And OU won! Boomer! Sooner!

  • Enjoyed the game

by OU Fan from Tennessee on 1/7/22Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

Alamodome is comfortable, but recommend upper tier tickets for better viewing of the game. Good hotel rooms within walking distance. Drunken fans following the game were an unwelcome sight. Food service in the area was slammed by OU fans and understaffed probably due to Covid; it was not easy to find food on game day. Overall, a positive experience.

  • Great visit

by Reviewer on 1/2/22Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

Loved the game, the stadium, the energy and food. An awesome experience.

  • Great Event with Sub Par venue

by OU Fan on 1/1/22Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

Not having enough working elevators makes getting around hard when your in a wheelchair as I was. The game was great and the people were great... But the city of San Antonio and the Alamo Dome were less than good if you are handicapped. The murder on the street as my family made its way down the street to our hotel was also a big negative.

  • OU Bowl Game

    by Mike M on 1/1/22Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The game was a great experience. Staff assistance inside for those of us with ADA issues could be significantly improved. Besides that piece though, the experience was awesome.

  • No ADA Help

    by Mike M on 1/1/22Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 2 out of 5

Lot selection at purchase was a random pick. We needed to be in Lot A for seat location and ADA issues. We were assigned to Lot D, and required to use the walkover ramp to the arena. There were no extra alternatives to assist in getting people like myself with ADA issues to and from Lot D. This is a component that will most likely keep me from attending another event at the Alamodome.

  • The Riverwalk is a great vacation destination

by SoonerFanSF on 1/1/22Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

San Antonio downtown is what Texas Live wishes it could be and at lower prices.

  • OU vs OU

by The Wicked One on 1/1/22Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

My only concern is that you ran out of water by the end of the first quarter and unfortunately my first concession run.

  • Parking

by Brian on 1/1/22Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Great spot! Easy to find, and no problems getting out after game.

  • Fun - but somewhat disappointing

by jedimom on 1/3/20Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

Enjoyed the game - but awards ceremony was lackluster (balloons seemed like they were NEVER going to fall). For a bowl game that has a "tradition" of high school bands - so disappointing. The Texas band overtook them as they were coming off the field - and then no mention of who they were or where from. Kind of a let-down.

  • Well Done

by plcpriest on 1/3/20Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Great job! All the quality food/drink stands were the best seen...variety, quality of food, etc. Restroom facilities were well maintained. Great idea to keep activities going for New Year’s celebration. Well done!!!!!
