Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome

Each winter, San Antonio, Texas, hosts two of the premier teams in the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences in the Alamo Bowl. Since the game's inception, the Alamo Bowl has been played at the Alamodome, which opened in 1993 and has a current capacity of 64,000. Since 2010, the Alamo Bowl has pitted the second-choice Pac-12 team against the second-choice Big 12 team, leading to intriguing matchups and classic competitions.

Valero Alamo Bowl History

The first Alamo Bowl was played on December 31, 1993, when the California Golden Bears trounced the Iowa Hawkeyes, 37-3. Originally created with tie-ins to the Pac-10 conference and the Southwest Conference, a lack of eligible SWC schools in the game's inaugural season led to the entire conference's demise in 1995 and a longtime partnership with the Big Ten. The now-defunct Builders Square hardware chain was the titular sponsor of the Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, with Sylvania and MasterCard also sponsoring the game before an unsponsored 2006 bowl and Valero's current sponsorship since 2007.

There have been many memorable moments in the Alamo Bowl's history. In 2005, the Michigan Wolverines almost pulled off a miracle against Nebraska, but their eight-lateral final play was stopped at the Cornhusker 16-yard line, leading to a 32-28 Nebraska victory. In 2011, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III led Baylor to a 67-56 victory over Washington, in what remains the highest-scoring bowl game to end in regulation. The January 2016 Alamo Bowl featured a comeback for the ages when TCU overcame a 31-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Oregon in triple-overtime, 47-41. In December 2017, TCU kicked a 4th quarter field goal to squeak past Stanford, 39-37, and the 2018 contest featured No. 12 Washington State holding on against an upstart Iowa State team, beating the No. 25 Cyclones, 28-26.

  • Venue fine, food not.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Alamo Bowl (except for the outcome of the game, being CU Buffs fans, LOL). The only complaint we had was the quality of the food. Soft Pretzel was abysmal, hot dog was ok, bun was stale. Nachos were mixed, the chips were OK, but the cheese was cold. I'd recommend eating at any of the number of outside restaurants and avoiding the food in the venue.

  • Alamo Great

Great experience at the Alamo Bowl and ticket was very easy to use on phone and enter the stadium. The seat was great.

  • Food disaster

by JC on 12/31/24Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

All was great except the food availability. Despite a sellout the food selection and availability was minimal. Lines were super long I.e. 30 minutes to get a soda, food or water. By the end of half time food selection was worse due to running out. Plenty of beer and alcohol vendors available so one could get drunk and obnoxious.

  • Great game but horrible vendor management!

by Great teams but horrible vendors! on 12/31/24Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

The vendor experience at this bowl was extremely disappointing. There was not enough signage to indicate lines, the vendors were overwhelmed, running out of food and every line took atleast 30-45 minutes. If we hadn’t arrived early we would have missed most of the game due to waiting in line for refreshments. The prices were also unreasonable for the value.

  • Blocked view

Sits behind the TV cameras should not be sold to the public. You cant see anything other than the backs of camera men.

  • Quick summary

    by N/A on 12/31/24Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

The experience for my child was nice. The dome was cold. The popcorn was horrible, but thebprices weren't too bad at the concession. The tickets were overpriced and not enought leg room for tall people. The Fan Zone activities needs revamping. It was very boring.

  • Decent; Death Valley better

by Jones on 12/31/24Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

Alamobowl was decent game between a disciplined BYU & and athletic CO. The seats were tiny-not for adults today. The venue kept running out of food; which didn’t have a large selection to begin with & like all entertainment places was overpriced. We purchased tickets for Christmas presents but I missed our LSU tigers & its stadium. It was a decent experience.

Too many details. Alamo Bowl was great in all aspects except for OU’s loss. I was very impressed with the way TicketMaster kept in touch from the time I purchased the tickets through the end of the game- outstanding service!!! Thank you
