Utah Utes Women’s Basketball History

The Utah Utes women's basketball team launched in 1974 within the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) as a member of the Intermountain Athletic Conference. Utah appeared in three consecutive AIAW tournaments between 1976 and 1978 and has netted 21 appearances in its postseason successor, the women’s NCAA Tournament. In the current tournament format, the Utes have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen three times, in 2001, 2006 and 2023, with their 2006 campaign ending in the Elite Eight. In 2024, Utah played through to the Second Round.

In 1982, Utah departed the Intermountain Athletic Conference for the High Country Athletic Conference, then transferred to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 1990, the Mountain West Conference in 1999 and the Pac-12 Conference in 2011. Ahead of the 2024-25 season, the Utes joined the Big 12 Conference. Across affiliations, the Utah Utes women’s basketball team have claimed 17 regular season conference titles and eight conference tournament championships. The team has also housed six future WNBA draft picks: Megan Huff, Shona Thorburn, Kim Smith, Leilani Mitchell, Morgan Warburton and Michelle Plouffe.

Utah Utes Women’s Basketball at Jon. M Huntsman Center

The Utah Utes women’s basketball team competes at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Opened in 1969 and most recently renovated in 2014, the on-campus arena can seat 15,000 fans. Along with the women’s basketball team, Jon M. Huntsman Center hosts teams for men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and women’s gymnastics, with the latter setting a venue attendance record at 16,019 in 2015. Over the years, the Jon M. Huntsman Center has presided over 81 March Madness tournament games.
