The best professional and amateur golfers in the United States and the world will descend on Mamaroneck, NY from June 18th to the 21st for the 120th U.S. Open. The U.S. Open brings the best amateur and professional golfers together, in an event organized by the United States Golf Association. The U.S. Open is the third of the four major golf tournaments, including the Masters in April, the PGA Championship in May, and The Open Championship in July, and is the second oldest of these competitions, behind only the British Open. The event is a major tournament for the PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour, and players compete for a $12.5 million purse and a first prize of $2.25 million.

U.S. Open History

The first United States Open golf championship took place in Newport Beach, Rhode Island in 1895, and was won by Horace Rawlins. It was not until 1911 when the first native born American, John J. McDermott, Jr., won his first of two consecutive U.S. Open titles. In 1913 at Brookline, Massachusetts, 20-year old amateur Francis Ouimet pulled off one of the greatest upsets in the history of golf, by upsetting 6-time British champion and 1900 U.S. Open winner Harry Vardon in a playoff. Amateur competitors held their own during the early years of the competition, with Bobby Jones winning four times as an amateur, and Johnny Goodman being the last amateur U.S. Open Champion to date, winning in 1933. The tournament has been on hiatus twice: in 1917 and 1918 due to World War I, and from 1942 to 1945 due to World War II.

The U.S. Open has ended in a playoff 33 times and in sudden death three times, both of which last occurred in 2008, when Tiger Woods held on against Rocco Mediate to win his 3rd U.S. Open and 14th major. In 2019, Gary Woodland defeated two-time reigning champion Brooks Koepka by three strokes to win the $2.25 million grand prize at Pebble Beach. The par-70 course at Winged Foot Golf Club will host its sixth U.S. Open in 2020, and its first since 2006, when Geoff Ogilvy beat Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie by one stroke.
