About

Washington Huskies at Alaska Airlines Arena

Up to 9,268 fans can enjoy a men's basketball game at Alaska Airlines Arena, located at the Hec Edmundson Pavilion, on the University of Washington campus in Seattle. Hec Ed was originally built in 1927, with renovations completed in 2000. The multipurpose arena also serves as home base to the Huskies women's basketball team, as well as the school's gymnastics and volleyball programs. The Huskies official student section is called The Dawg Pack.

Washington Huskies Men's Basketball History

UW men's basketball dates back to 1895. The program competed as an independent until 1915 then joined the Pacific Coast Conference for the 1915-16 and 1916-17 seasons before returning to independent status for 1917-18. Washington had a long run in the PCC from 1918 to 1959 before departing for the Athletic Association of Western Universities from 1959 to 1968.

Since 1968, the Huskies have been in what has been the Pac-8, Pac-10 and now Pac-12.

In the program's first century of existence, Hec Edmundson (for whom the pavilion is named) was the all-time winningest head coach, with 488-195 spanning from 1920 to 1947. Lorenzo Romar, who led the team from 2003 to 2017, notably was 298-196 overall, with six trips to the NCAA tournament. Romar also played for the Huskies from 1978 to 1980 before playing in the NBA for five seasons. Mike Hopkins took over for Romar as head coach of the Huskies in 2017.

Washington has been a consistent pipeline to the NBA. Markelle Fultz became the first Husky drafted No. 1 overall when the Philadelphia 76ers selected him in 2017. Prior to Fultz, other notable players taken in the first round out of UW include Chris Welp (16th overall in 1987), Nate Robinson (21st overall in 2005), Spencer Hawes (10th overall in 2007), Terrence Ross (eighth overall in 2012), Marquese Chriss (eighth overall in 2016), Dejounte Murray (29th overall in 2016) and Matisse Thybulle (20th overall in 2019). All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas was taken in the second round of the 2011 NBA draft.

Washington sports teams were originally nicknamed the Sun Dodgers until the mascot was switched to the Huskies in 1922.

The Huskies have played against the cross-state rival Washington State Cougars since 1910. The Gonzaga Bulldogs — located in Spokane, Washington — and Oregon Ducks are also considered rivals.

    Husky Basketball

by Kakerina on 3/5/13Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

While my husband and I were sort of rooting for WSU, the two 12 yr olds were definitely Husky fans. It was a back and forth game and at one point the two boys were sitting with their fingers crossed for the free throws. The Cougar fans right behind us were having great fun.

The seats were absolutely terrible. We were up as high as we could get and I was embarrassed that this is what my husband received for Christmas from me.

    Very poor

by Twotontessie on 1/21/13Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

$60+ for two seats up high where you can not even see the score - not recommended. Not worth the time or money.

    Classic Basketball Arena

by shbldr on 1/18/13Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

This was my first visit to the Alaska Airlines Arena - a near ideal place to see a college basketball game. Nicely remodeled yet with 85 years of history, I am sure it becomes very loud with a full house. Since I only needed a single seat I got a great ticket at mid-court just up from the UW student section - couldn't have asked for a better seat. The staff was very helpful, food and drink service abundant (even if choices rather standard and boring). The additon of Avar's is a nice alternative. The attached Uof W Hall of Fame was interesting and well presented and the clothing/gift store very impressive. Best of all the music was NOT too loud, I didn't cringe in pain as I do in so many basketball/sports arenas. Hope to see more CU/UW basketball games in future years

Fun venue. Don't waste your money on the most upper level seats. Our seats were great except one had partial viewing due to a banister. Luckily we were able to move down a few seats.

    Huskies v. Trojans

by daddeuce on 2/6/12Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

This was my 5th game this year. I have had seats all over Hec Edmundsen Pavilion during those games. I was worried about my seats because they were four rows directly behind the Husky Band. This was not a problem at all, and would really recommend those seats. The best part was that next to me sat two personalities from KJR radio, who were both very kind and gracious. One discussed sports with me for half the game. If I had a bucket list for life, that type of experience would have been on that list.

Got great seats next to really nice people. This was a great game, my 4th this year. I had not been to a game for 30 years, when I graduated. I will keep going as I can.

    Good times

by GoBruinz on 1/1/12Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

It was fun to watch the game, not only to watch the Huskies play, but also to see Michelle Obama's brother (Oregon St coach) and his team play. Great venue and great fans as well, although less crowded probably due to the concurrent bowl game and the holidays.

OK once I got there, but I will never again attend a Husky basketball game that starts before 7:00 pm. Traffic and parking are terrible during rush hour. Got there with 1:00 remaining in the 1st half

The wrong team won, but it was still awesome!

by Anonymous on 1/22/11Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

I really enjoyed everything about this event, except parking. It was the worst parking I have ever been involved in. Plan on showing up 1.5 hours before the game. We were .25 miles away from parking and 30 minutes early to tip off and we missed the first 15 minutes of the game. Very disappointing even with what we thought was good planning.

Husky rule in PAC 10 BB

by HuskyDave on 1/11/11Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

My two sons and I attended our first Husky BB game i n BA Arena. We had the cheap seats in the rafters but there is not a bad seat in the house. The view to the court was great but the Jumbo Tron is partially blocked by the score board hanging from the ceiling in our section (#3).

Good team, arena needs some work.

by mvp98042 on 12/24/10Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

Loved watching the Dawgs whoop up on the wolfpack. The arena needs some work though. Lines for the bathrooms and for food are way too long. The arena just can't handle that many people.
