About

Washington Huskies at Alaska Airlines Arena

Up to 9,268 fans can enjoy a men's basketball game at Alaska Airlines Arena, located at the Hec Edmundson Pavilion, on the University of Washington campus in Seattle. Hec Ed was originally built in 1927, with renovations completed in 2000. The multipurpose arena also serves as home base to the Huskies women's basketball team, as well as the school's gymnastics and volleyball programs. The Huskies official student section is called The Dawg Pack.

Washington Huskies Men's Basketball History

UW men's basketball dates back to 1895. The program competed as an independent until 1915 then joined the Pacific Coast Conference for the 1915-16 and 1916-17 seasons before returning to independent status for 1917-18. Washington had a long run in the PCC from 1918 to 1959 before departing for the Athletic Association of Western Universities from 1959 to 1968.

Since 1968, the Huskies have been in what has been the Pac-8, Pac-10 and now Pac-12.

In the program's first century of existence, Hec Edmundson (for whom the pavilion is named) was the all-time winningest head coach, with 488-195 spanning from 1920 to 1947. Lorenzo Romar, who led the team from 2003 to 2017, notably was 298-196 overall, with six trips to the NCAA tournament. Romar also played for the Huskies from 1978 to 1980 before playing in the NBA for five seasons. Mike Hopkins took over for Romar as head coach of the Huskies in 2017.

Washington has been a consistent pipeline to the NBA. Markelle Fultz became the first Husky drafted No. 1 overall when the Philadelphia 76ers selected him in 2017. Prior to Fultz, other notable players taken in the first round out of UW include Chris Welp (16th overall in 1987), Nate Robinson (21st overall in 2005), Spencer Hawes (10th overall in 2007), Terrence Ross (eighth overall in 2012), Marquese Chriss (eighth overall in 2016), Dejounte Murray (29th overall in 2016) and Matisse Thybulle (20th overall in 2019). All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas was taken in the second round of the 2011 NBA draft.

Washington sports teams were originally nicknamed the Sun Dodgers until the mascot was switched to the Huskies in 1922.

The Huskies have played against the cross-state rival Washington State Cougars since 1910. The Gonzaga Bulldogs — located in Spokane, Washington — and Oregon Ducks are also considered rivals.

    ally oop pass for dunk

by Hoopstar on 2/9/16Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

The game was awesome. I took my son for his 8th birthday. It was an exciting game and although the huskies lost, they played well and are good enough to play with the 13th ranked team in country. The seats where good. We where at end of court. The sears are bench seats which I like better, because you can adjust for comfort depending on size of people around you. They have husky pads on each seat. My son was able to stand up most of game because he was excited and he didn't block anyone's view.

    The truth about Hec Ed.

by HankWJr on 1/22/16Alaska Airlines Arena (Hec Ed) - Seattle

This IS a terrific venue for basketball. The arena is not that big. You get a good view of the game from virtually anywhere. Rows 20 and below are 1st class, comfortable with arms to the chairs with a great view of everything. Sec 2 behind the visitor's bench and student section are bleachers in Row 1-14. All sections rows 21-26 have nothing obstructing the scoreboard, have seat backs and respectable leg room. While one can see the corner scoreboards fine, the view of the main SCOREBOARD is obstructed in rows 27 and up, in sections 1,2, 7-9 and 14. You can still see the court and side/corner scoreboards just fine from rows 27 and up. These are bleacher seats (row 27+) with no backs (all sections) are narrow, with not a lot of leg room, although generally there are not many people sitting up there! Moral of the story? best to be in row 26 or below!

Husky basketball has a bright future.

by 1OldPinky on 11/22/15Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

I have not been to a live college basketball game in over 50 years and this was a treat. The game was not very exciting as far as the score was concerned; but it was fun to see how skilled and disciplined the players on each team were. My wife and I enjoyed the game and especially visiting with friends from college.

The UW basketball team has not been playing well for much of the regular season but it was a fun atmosphere in the second half. The price of the tickets was far too high for the upper level considering the arena was nowhere near capacity.

Team is horrible. Don't expect them to win another game this year. If you don't want to waste your money, don't bother going.

by DevfromSumner on 1/13/15Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

Game was fine but was irritated that my seats were in the last row in the top of the building and couldn't tell that from my map when I purchased my tickets

$62 to sit in a very cramped seat. It was worse than an airline seat. No wonder they named it Alaska Arena.

College Basketball is, well, College Basketball.

by AWmF on 12/27/14Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

U of W basketball arena is comfortable, welcoming; the crowd was larger than expected for preseason, and the team is looking good. The students were on Christmas break and the noise level probably wasn't as high as usual. If the Dawgs keep winning into the league play you won't be able to get seats.

    UW non-conference opener

by EMcDub on 11/17/14Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

Happy with seat location and game. Seat price seems high to me ($35 each for Sec 7, Row 23). Took my 8-yr old son but apparently there's no price reduction for a child ticket, which seems odd and disappointing. Go Dawgs!!

    Former Big East School wins

by Newmanizer on 12/25/13Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

UW played hard but U CONN had some better athletes. I think UW will need to widen their recruiting base to the East Coast. U CONN came back and took the lead, why I am not sure, I assume due to the difference in talent. I am hoping this is a rebuilding year for UW. The Hec Ed arena is designed so you can see reasonably well from most seats, and it is a good place to view a basketball game

by RedhawkFan on 11/13/13Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion - Seattle

This was a great start to another college basketball season! It is always a treat to see cross town rivals compete in a spirited, respectful manner. Good luck to both the Huskies and the Redhawks for the 2013-14 season!
