University of Georgia Bulldogs Football History

The Georgia Bulldogs have cemented themselves as one of college football's modern elite programs after winning back-to-back CFP National Championship games in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. In the latter matchup against the TCU Horned Frogs, the Bulldogs set the record for largest margin of victory in a Division I Bowl game with a final score of 65-7. The team would break their own record in the 2023 Orange Bowl, where the Bulldogs defeated Florida State 63-3.

Among Georgia’s distinguished alumni are head coach Glenn Scobey WarnerakaPop Warner, one of the fathers of modern football, running back and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker and future Pro Football Hall of Fame players Fran Tarkenton, Terrell Davis and Champ Bailey. Between four national championships and 17 Conference titles, some great football has gone down over the years at Sanford Stadium. An extended bright spot in the Bulldogs' legacy came during the Walker era, during which the team went undefeated as the consensus national champion in 1980 and eventually won 21 games and lost just three over the next three seasons. The modern Bulldogs team set an SEC record 29-game win streak from 2021 to 2023.

University of Georgia Bulldogs Football at Sanford Stadium

The Dawgs play in Athens, Georgia at Sanford Stadium, which opened in 1929. Private bushes encircle the field, giving rise to the saying that, at Sanford, games are played "between the hedges." The mascot Uga, pronounced "ugg-uh," is an English bulldog that wears a spiked collar and jersey. Georgia's long-standing gameday traditions include the "Glory, Glory" rally song, the pre-game performance by the school's Redcoat Band of the "Battle Hymn of the Bulldog Nation" and the ringing of the Chapel bell after every victory.
