About

University of South Carolina Gamecocks Football at Williams-Brice Stadium

There's nothing quite like the energy of SEC Football, and the University of South Carolina Gamecocks are playing the best conference opponents in the nation, year in and year out. National powerhouses like Clemson, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and Auburn make their way to Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC, every Saturday during college football season, and a Gamecocks game starts well before kickoff. While the 52-acre tailgate area is a proper SEC football pre-game experience, there are also three nearby breweries and a more ready-made fan zone in the Lexington Medical Center Gamecock Village, which opens 4.5 hours before kickoff. Once inside of "The Cock Pit," you're among 80,000+ people in the stadium as the team enters to the strains of "Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30" made famous in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, a game-day tradition for nearly 40 years. If the Gamecocks score a touchdown, the music becomes even more a part of the experience, with Darude's "Sandstorm" blasting after every touchdown. Plain and simple, Gamecock football games are a big deal. The team has ended the year in the Top 25 six times since 2000, and even the mascot, Cocky, is — no joke — a four-time national champion mascot. Every home game sells out, because who wouldn't want to watch SEC Players of the Year like defensive end Jadeveon Clowney or running back Marcus Lattimore? The sun shines strong on Saturday in Columbia, so don't forget to put on sunscreen, and as long as you're wearing garnet and black, you'll fit right in.

University of South Carolina Gamecocks Football History

College Football's South Carolina Gamecocks play their games at the 80,250-capacity Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC. Since 2010, the stadium has undergone $30 million in renovations, including the installation of a giant 36-foot-high by 124-foot-wide HD video board and the lush Springs Brooks Plaza promenade entrance. A decorated college football program to say the least, the team has been coached in the past by Hall of Famers Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier, while current head coach Will Muschamp has taken the Gamecocks to a bowl game every year of his tenure. The program has churned out quality NFL talent in players like the great Sterling Sharpe, former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney and Super Bowl winners Stephon Gilmore and Alshon Jeffery.

USC - Georgia at Williams Brice

by woody57 on 9/13/10Williams Brice Stadium - Columbia

The atmosphere at the opening SEC game of the year was electric. Neither school/team dissapointed the fans. As for the stadium, it is one of the more poorly designed venues you would want to attend. The ingress and egress are time consuming. It took over 20 minutes to exit the stadium. The facility was not built with enough restroom facilities. Women especially had to wait for long periods. Driving to the venue through Columbia is a challenge. Even if you were fortunate enough to have a parking pass you had to wade through and hour+ of stop and go to reach your destination.

The Gamecocks dominated from start to finish with star freshman Marcus Lattimore carrying the ball 37 times for 182 yards and two TDs

    Great atmosphere at Williams-Brice Stadium

by GamecockFan2009 on 11/16/09Williams Brice Stadium - Columbia

I wish the outcome would have been different, but we had a great time at the game. The crowd was very loud and until the 4th quarter we had the Gators on the ropes. A big interception by one of their DL was the turning point in the game. Tim Tebow is great and Florida Gators should repeat as Nat'l Champs once they get past Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.

    SEC Football at its best!

by aaa2222 on 11/16/09Williams Brice Stadium - Columbia

The crowd at the game was amazing and I would recommend attending a South Carolina game to any college football fan. The tailgating and fans can only be found in the SEC.

    Tickets

by G8tors on 11/16/09Williams Brice Stadium - Columbia

Thank you so much Ticketmaster--for this is the only way I could get to the game. For when I tried to order through the booster system I was turned down for there were no more tickets and I didn't have enough points after 20 years of being a booster! My family enjoyed the event and the seats were great!

    GAMECOCKS #1

by 1Gamecockfan on 10/30/09Williams Brice Stadium - Columbia

I absolutely love attending a Carolina football game and wish that I could be at each and every single game. Everything about it is awesome. From when the guys come running out to 2001, the crowd, the music... Fighting the crowd is not an issue for me because nothing compares to a Carolina football game. It was our kids first game watching USC play Vandy and they had a blast and can't wait to go back either! GO GAMECOCKS!!!!! Beat the Vols!!

    Great Event!

by ukchick0327 on 10/12/09Williams Brice Stadium - Columbia

Although we lost, my husband and I had a great time! He is in the Navy and stationed in Charleston so for us to see the Cats in action was something we had to jump on. This will be our last UK event for a long time so we were grateful for the opportunity.
