About

Underworld are Rick Smith and Karl Hyde. Their peerless first album - dubnobasswithmyheadman - was released to universal acclaim in 1994. In the thirty years since that mould breaking debut, the band have established their reputation as one of the most groundbreaking and important electronic acts of all time, one that constantly pushes creative boundaries, twists genres and refuses to stay still. Thirty years on, their new album - Strawberry Hotel - is no exception. This release adds to their already extensive catalogue of euphoric electronic tracks such as Techno Shinkansen and the 90s hit Born Slippy - each one calling millions of people to the dancefloor globally.

  • uttlerly fantastic.

by kimbooo on 11/2/10Roseland Ballroom - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I got front row and center. That was reason enough to be super excited. I've loved underworld for many many long years. I've seen them transition, a lot. Ive only seen them play once before this which was in 07. That show was pretty amazing too! Karl and Rick are just brilliant. They really know how to put on a good show and entertain. Karls dancing is untouchable. They rocked out, and even made me cry at one point because I was so damn happy and excited. I never stopped dancing. Even the DJ that played before them was fantastic too, definitely will check him out!

  • underworld = no show until 2am?

by underworldnoshow on 11/1/104th and B - San DiegoRating: 1 out of 5

Doors opened at 9, DJ played until 10. then black audio came on...which was terrible. then underworld was supposed to play but they brought the DJ out again and told us that underworld was going to play at the after party. i want my money back!

  • Blaqk Audio is remarkable!

by Mavtastic on 11/1/104th and B - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

I went to this event to see Blaqk Audio....who I adore. They did not disappoint! Davey Havok is such a delight....he really knows how to put on a show. Jade is a master at all things electronic, he blows my mind. I just wish their new album was out...from what I heard at the concert, the new songs are phenominal! I was disappointed because I was told that the Blaqk Audio would be on at 10pm...they didn't go on until closer to 11pm and only performed a handful of songs. I didn't even stay for underworld.

I always enjoy see them play live and they are just amazing live as well. However, having seen them a few times in the past, Karl seemed a bit tired this time. I was at the front row and that alone was just super exciting and fun. I just wish that Karl had more energy like when they played in Japan. He was jumping around, dancing, talking,,,simply full of energy (later, I read that Karl was indeed very exhausted). However, I still enjoyed the show very, very much. I would not miss their show no matter what. Despite his performance, I REALLY appreciate them coming to San Diego. DRAWBACK: DJ and the so-called special guest, Blaqk Audio were terrible. DJ was playing lame lame electro pop dance music for very very long time. It started getting annoying and painful to hear the music in such loud volume, then it got even worse when Blaqk Audio came out. I know there were some BA funs at the front, but they could have arranged some one better or more in line with Underworld type of music. Underworld has some dub influence or affection, they could have simply had some DJ play some deep dub. That would have been much much better to me personally. So it's just my 2 cent. PS No Underworld T-shirts or anything sold at the event: What's up with that? I'm glad I got a copy of Karl's exhibition catalogue from Japan a few weeks back, but I was a bit disappointed.

  • Underworld was great as usual. The others..nope

    by Rvr300 on 11/1/104th and B - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

Skullcrusher: Horrible warm up. Bad music selection. Bad volume control (way too loud). I think most djs would have gotten the hint by the reaction of the crowd but he seemed oblivious. I'd hazard to say he might be an ok choice for late night or after party bt certainly not warm up and certainly not for underworld. Blaqk: again bad bad bad choice. Sound issues, wrong sound, it seemed like whomever did the bill for this event did not even know who underworld was. UW is always amazing and this was no exception. Overcame the obnoxious opening sets. I'd tell someone to go to this show with this billing only if they knew when UW set would start and avoid the openers.

  • Amazing!

The show was fantastic. Even though the singer was feeling a bit under the weather, his voice was right on! The songs were flawless and the encore was SICK!!!

  • Great Band, terrible venue

by pinworm on 11/1/104th and B - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

The night was nearly spoiled by a disorganized club. Two artists were set to perform before Underworld and I personally think a 2 hour opening set by the FIRST artist alone is too much. This guy simply would not get off the stage. This was followed by a short set by Blaque Audio, a bizzare mix of depeche mode, peter murphy, skinny puppy and early 80' ministry ( think the "Revenge" album) who brought the highschoolers in. Then, to our horror the first DJ was brought back out..but kept out of sight from the booing. There was obviously a problem with Underworld who came out late and began the set with a muffled audio problem that was not resolved until the third song, at which point the sound kicked butt and got to where it needed to be. Karl was sick, throat problems and it seemed like he was struggling and having trouble finding the energy. That aside, the show was awesome and the arrangements much much stronger than last years US visit. The highpoint for me was the "Rez/Cowgirl" section with the bombastic 5 minute percussion intro. "Diamond Jigsaw", a song which sounds like a flashback to Underworld circa 1988, was significantly de-rocked and up-techno'd and came out great, and as usual, you cannot beat "Moaner" for a final encore. Hey, rough show or not, I am just glad they were here. Just once, I want to see "Juanita" performed live!!

  • Underworld @ Roseland!!

by hicksgospel on 10/31/10Roseland Ballroom - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The opening act Felix Da Housecat was alright. The problem was not many had shown up yet and people were just ready for Underworld after all these years. As for Underworld simply put, the show rocked!! Some great new ones off of Barking and some golden oldies. I must also say that I just love Roseland Ballroom. It's easy to get around, the sound is great, and the beer is well priced. :)

Great show. Great selection of music played. Hyde is an incredible dancer. I was diggin his new moves and I have to say, it adds so much to their overall performance. I had a great deal of fun. I still cant believe I got to see them. I sincerely hope to see them again soon. I just wish that they would sell shirts, posters, stickers etc.

  • Underworld - Show of One of the Best Show Seasons.

by beacoupfish on 10/29/10Roseland Ballroom - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This year was an amazing year for electronic music and even more amazing for the NYC scene. We had numerous bands come out with new albums and many of the greats showed up after long hiatuses to hit the NY scene. Kruder and Dorfmeister Chemical Brothers Massive Attack Unkle LCD Soundsystem Caribou ...just to name a few. And now Underworld. They attract the best crowds, the energy is unbelievable and no one performs like Mr. Hyde. Please go and enlighten yourself.

Underworld was absolutely amazing, there are truly not enough words. I had wanted to see them perform live for years and they definitely did not disappoint. It's one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

Flew from Miami to see this show. Intimate show, not sharing the stage with 20 other acts, like at festivals. Please come to Miami, possibly The Fillmore MB.

Impressive show... They never cease to amaze me with their energy live. Strangely, they didn't play anything off of Second of the Toughest... but they ended with "Moaner" which was nothing less than spectacular. The visuals and lights were tastefully done.
