UMPHREY'S MCGEE IN CONCERT:
Chicago-based band Umphrey's McGee brings a unique prog rock twist to the traditional jam band format popularized by legends like Phish and the Grateful Dead. The band's signature "improg" sound -- a combination of improvisation and progressive rock elements -- makes for an eclectic live show characterized by improvised jamming, virtuosic musicianship, and constantly changing setlists. A tireless touring act known for their marathon sets and fearless creativity, Umphrey's Mcgee continue to groove fans both new and old every time they go on tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Umphrey's McGee was formed by several Notre Dame students in 1997. After cutting their teeth performing covers of their idols Phish and the Grateful Dead at local venues, the band made their album debut in 1998 with the cheekily titled Greatest Hits. Vol. III. In 2001 they began experimenting with various improvisation techniques, eventually developing a method they dubbed the "Jimmy Stewart", named after the hotel ballroom in which they perfected the style. The technique made its debut at the band's shows in support of their 2002 sophomore album Local Band Does OK, which included an appearance at the inaugural Bonnaroo festival. By the late '00s the band was climbing the Billboard 200, and in 2014 their eighth studio album Similar Skin landed at No. 49 on the Billboard charts -- an impressive feat for the cult heroes. In 2014 Umphrey's McGee released the critically acclaimed album Similar Skin, their most ambitious effort to date and a perfect addition to their endlessly creative live shows.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"This is one of the absolute best bands touring today. The musicianship is simply astounding. Get familiar with their music and go see them."
"This is the tightest band in Rock and Roll and can change directions on a dime. Their music covers genres from Reggae to Rap to Metal all in top notch prog style. They do covers like no other band and the mash ups are out of this world. They bring the crowd out to capacity!" @ Observatory North Park
"UM truly are the rightful heirs to the improg throne once occupied by The Dead, Phish etc., The diversity and range of this band is beyond belief. If you are considering going to a UM show - don't hesitate further - just get some tickets and get there."
What a fantastic show, it was great to see Kris back playing behind the Drum kit!!
This venue gets great music, but it’s always overcrowded and it’s incredibly hard to see no matter where you are in the venue. Prices are pricey too
UM never disappoints. However, the drummer's cymbals were not mic'd or not turned up enough. The overhead condenser mic was a. single field mic, not picking up the individual cymbals/hi hats nearly enough. (Kris does great cymbal work, and as I am a seasoned drummer it's one of the reasons I like seeing them live). The Fillmore is typically a perfect sounding venue, no excuse.
These guys are ridiculously talented and will have you both rocking out, dancing and witnessing jaw dropping songs that cover multiple genres.
If progressive metal jam is your thing, look no further my friend! Umphreys never ceases to amaze me. That’s why ya girl does 15 shows a year :).
Umphrey’s was awesome as usual sad I couldn’t get the audio for the show
The band was amazing, the space was amazing and the staff was super friendly!
Great venue and awesome show! That was my first Umprey's McGee show, and now I'm definitely a fan.
Umphreys still killing it!! You don’t want to miss seeing them in a small venue!!!!
Overall excellent with the exception of the vocal audio which could have been better!
The venue is great in Baltimore Harbor, the city skyline is beautiful. Umphrey's McGee put on an excellent show with awesome originals and some entertaining covers. It was a nice way to spend a Friday evening with friends.
First brothers tune I’ve heard them play and just solid Umph besides that.
The best band ever!! Show was incredible and an awesome venue!
UM puts on an amazing show. It definitely takes 25 years of experience to put on a show like this. Umphrey's McGee tackles challenging harmonies and complicated rhythms expertly, with a "tightness"that makes them seem absolutely psychic. Serious energy and dance vibes throughout the entire show. I brought my 70 year old dad, Umphrey's spewed so much fire, I thought I was going to have to take him to hospital.
They were so tight! Other band members step in and really showed how talented they really are! Didn’t miss a beat! Seriously get the best ticket possible.
Umphrey's mcGee put in a great show as always, the state theartre is a fabulous venue!
Loved very second of it. Thanks for making a really fun experience.
You'll have a great time just sitting back listening to these guys jam, or dancing all night!
They were great, just blew me away. The band started right on time and the show lasted 3 hours with a 20-25 minute break. Highly recommend seeing rhjs. And if yoh like upbeat rock jams.
Everything was perfect! The band was AMAZING! The weather was perfect! I cannot say enough good things about the venue, it was laid back but like a well oiled machine! No lines for food, drink or restrooms even though there were a lot of people there! It was outstanding all around!
