About

Chicago's eclectic rock band Umphrey's McGee has been keeping fans on their toes for nearly 27 years now. Though often pigeonholed into "jam band" circles, Umphrey's doesn't fit that traditional mold; and their fans don't either. Is it prog rock? Song-forward, Beatles-esque arrangements? Be careful, they might hit you with some metal riffs mid-set, too. Amongst 2,500+ gigs and 300 million+ tracks streamed, you-had-to-be-there moments include the band's performance at the first-ever Bonnaroo and selling more CDs (remember those?) than any other act on the bill. A leader in the live music world, Umphrey's McGee became the first group to launch its own single-artist streaming service with UMLive.net, which houses recordings of every gig since 2005. The service has since grown and now lives on through Nugs.net, which is used by the likes of Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, and more.

Beyond intimate backstage encounters and ski trips with their most diehard fans, Umphrey's McGee instituted the groundbreaking "Headphones & Snowcones" program, granting fans access to professional headphones and a soundboard-quality mix to listen wirelessly at shows. At their UMBowl, they empowered the audience to vote on the setlist in real-time and choose favorite improv themes via text message. In 2017, they stepped into another realm altogether by integrating themselves into the VR Platform Endless Riff. All of the above has earned the band status as kings of the live music scene with standing yearly engagements at iconic venues, their own events in Iceland (Rockjavick) and Mexico (Holidaze), and co-hosting Chillicothe, IL's long-running Summer Camp festival. In April 2025, Umphrey's McGee will lead their faithful fans on another bucket list musical adventure: Morockshow will feature three nights in Marrakech, Morocco, marking another signature event in an exotic location. Umphrey's McGee's latest release Asking For A Friend showcases more evolved songwriting and thoughtful arranging from a band continuing to grow and mature with their droves of die-hard, longtime fans.

  • Rock Show

by Chambers on 10/23/09Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

I've never seen a more tasteful display of Rockn' Metal beats. I was blown away. This was not my first Ump show, and after last night it sure as hell wont be my last... Portland here I come!!!

  • Mantis Tour

by geca on 10/18/09Orbit Room - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

I had the pleasure of seeing their show in Millwaukee the week before. The show in Grand Rapids blew that one away. They played a lot more songs from their Mantis CD. Plus they mixed it up with some of their older favorites. I think the crowd was more into the band, which made for a better show.

  • Umphrey's McGee is godlike

by LeLatier on 10/12/09Orbit Room - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best jam band concerts i have been to ever! Their first set was good but their second set was mind blowing and the encore nuked my imagination. Very good job can't wait for them to come again.

  • Umphrey's is the best band touring...

    by michigan96 on 10/11/09Orbit Room - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

If you are reading this, you probably already know it. UM is the band to see right now. Their creative genius is only overshadowed by their enthusiasm for performing live. I was able to meet them at the TC show. What's even better, they are the most humble gents. Please don't come to see them. I don't want to start seeing them in stadiums.

  • Umphrey's Mcgee and Macpodz

    Always amazing, always.

  • Umphrey's Mcgee = speed metal???

    by CDub2313 on 10/7/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 3 out of 5

I was a huge fan of seeing Umphrey's in college (WMU in Kalamzoo) in the late 90's. Somewhere between then and now, Umphrey's has become an experimental metal-jam-math rock band. There definitely original but not the band I remember...which was a cross between Phish and Dave Mathew's. Oh well, things change.

  • Umphrey's Mcgee was amazing!!! Too much smokers

    by Band24 on 10/5/09Eagles Club/The Rave/Eagles Ballroom - MilwaukeeRating: 3 out of 5

I enjoyed Umprhey's Mcgee very much, they put on a killer show. Plus, they dealt with the echo and reverb of the ballroom very well. Unfortunately, there were a lot of smokers, the smoke congestion was horrible, I actually left early for that reason only. C'mon wheres the ban?

  • Umphreys was awesome

    by teeniegurl on 10/5/09Eagles Club/The Rave/Eagles Ballroom - MilwaukeeRating: 4 out of 5

they didn't play the normal stuff. they played a lot of songs that I didn't know but it rocked!!!! Off the new album I only noticed Cemetary Walk and Mantis. They were jammin hard the whole time and it sounded amazing!!!

  • Unforgettable

by JamboreeJack on 10/4/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Umphrey's blew my mind. Like, literally, my mind was all across the theatre in different bits and pieces here and there. The light show was amazing to accompany the band's alternating between folk-style jamming and rock jamming. The opening act was great too. The only thing I didn't like was when the show ended at midnight!

  • Umph

    by entropy on 10/4/09Eagles Club/The Rave/Eagles Ballroom - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

It is obvious that Umphrey's McGee feels really comfortable playing at this venue. Each time I have seem them play at the Eagles Ballroom they shine. The crowd is always really into it and it is as laid back or as raucous as you want it to get. Lots of space, easy assess to the bathrooms, food. Easy to park, right off the highway for Chicago people. Lots of newer music. Easy to get right upfront.

  • by Almuric on 10/4/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Umphrey's McGee did not disappoint. Their light show has improved as well. Well worth the price. The warm up band was good as well.

  • UM/Macpodz @ The Michigan Theater, Ann Arbor

by pski on 10/4/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

The Macpodz opened with a blistering set. A local Michigan band playing to the hometown fans. It was the first time we heard them and we hope to see them again. Bought their CD on the way out. Umphrey's played their usual incredible jamorama show. We were in the third row. Had a good time visiting with the Grand Rapids contingent of Umphreaks. If you have a chance to see this show in Grnad Rapids or Traverse City, Go Dogs Go! You won't regret it. Incredible value compared to the big name acts. Choc full 'O groove. You won't be disapointed.

  • go see umphrey;s mcgee!!!

these guys are sick. they make my mind explode! blown away again, 6th time I've seen them in the past 3 years, never a disappointment.

  • Umphrey's McGee's live performance not for me.

    by 0neArrow on 10/3/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 1 out of 5

This concert was not what I expected at all. While I have never been to one of there live performances I expected to here their great songs as I have heard on satelite radio. What I heard was wave after wave of a technological sonic attack directed at me.

  • great show

by lions on 10/3/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

great show. They played for over 2 hours and it was great. Loud and fun!

  • Kiced Ass

by jkerwin on 10/2/09Indiana University Auditorium - BloomingtonRating: 5 out of 5

So the whole performance was incredible. The lights along with the music really made it great. What made it so cool was going to the afterparty at the BlueBird and meeting some of the guys from Umphrey's.

  • Absolutely stunning

by riiiico on 10/2/09Indiana University Auditorium - BloomingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Musical excellence combined with a light show to never forget!! Umphrey's performance moved the crowd and blew my mind and everyone's around me. This show will be my favorite show of all time, until i go to the next Umphrey's concert.
