UConn Huskies Women’s Basketball History

The UConn Huskies have one of the most decorated programs in women’s college basketball. Geno Auriemma took over as head coach ahead of the 1985-86 season and has led the Huskies ever since on his way to becoming the winningest coach in college basketball. Under Auriemma’s leadership, the Huskies have earned a women’s college basketball record 12 NCAA National Championship titles, 24 Final Four appearances, six undefeated seasons, and two of the longest win streaks in college basketball history. Between their former membership in the American Conference and ongoing placement in the Big East, the Huskies have secured 31 regular season conference titles and 30 conference tournament championships. Notable alumni include Rebecca Lobo, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Swin Cash, Maya Moore, Renee Montgomery, Tina Charles, Breanna Stewart and Paige Bueckers.

UConn Huskies Women’s Basketball at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and PeoplesBank Arena

The Huskies split their home games between the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut, and the larger PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford. Gampel Pavilion opened in 1990 and seats more than 10,000 fans, while PeoplesBank Arena opened in 1975 and has a capacity of nearly 16,000 for basketball games. PeoplesBank Arena was initially named Hartford Civic Center and also went by XL Center from 2007 to 2025. Home games feature a boisterous student section and the charming Big Red tradition.
