About

UConn Huskies at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the XL Center

The Huskies split their home games between the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut, and the larger XL Center in Hartford. Gampel opened in 1990 and seats more than 10,000 fans, while the XL Center, formerly the Hartford Civic Center, opened in 1975 and has a capacity of nearly 16,000 for basketball games. Home games feature a boisterous student section and the charming Big Red tradition. When the Huskies make a run or score a big bucket, a longtime redheaded superfan named Tom Emery leads the arena in a "U! C! O! N! N! UConn! UConn! UConn!" chant.

UConn Huskies Men's Basketball History

Entering the 2019–2020 season, the UConn Huskies men's basketball team had won more national championships since 1999 than any other program in the country — four in all, three of them under coach Jim Calhoun and one under his successor, former point guard Kevin Ollie. Their title seasons featured some of the best players in the college game, among them Richard Hamilton in 1999, Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor in 2004, Kemba Walker in 2011, and Shabazz Napier in 2014.

It was Calhoun who turned a regional power into a national power. Under longtime coach Hugh Greer, the Huskies won 12 Yankee Conference titles in 16 full seasons but made it beyond the NCAA tournament's first round only once. Greer died of a heart attack in 1963, having won 286 games and lost 112, a winning percentage of .719 clip. Calhoun was hired away from Northeastern in 1986 and by the end of the decade he'd fashioned UConn into a team worthy of a top seed in the NCAA tourney. That 1989–90 "Dream Season" included a memorable Sweet 16 victory over Clemson. With a second remaining and the Huskies trailing by a point, Scott Burrell fired a full-court pass to Tate George, who dropped in his turnaround jumper to give UConn the win. Calhoun wrapped up his career in Storrs in 2012 with a 629-245 record and a .720 winning percentage.

UConn is now a reliable pipeline of NBA-worthy talent. Among the future pros who passed through Connecticut: Ray Allen, Caron Butler, Andre Drummond, Rudy Gay, Jeremy Lamb, Donyell Marshall and Clifford Robinson.

    Great value

I really like the idea of bringing the price down. As a result I took my 11th grade son and two of his friends to go and enjoy a game. Had the price been any higher, I would have stayed home and watched on T.V.

    GO UCONN

by runnerkm on 3/17/10University of Connecticut - Storrs

It was an okay game. Luckily UCONN won but barely. It was actually pretty sad that the Northeastern fans, though smaller in number, were much louder than the UCONN fans. UCONN fans didn't get loud until the very end when the game was in doubt. Oh well, I'm glad I went because it will be the last time this year to see them play.

    UCONN

NIT game was a lot of fun. Cheap price and it's usually tough to get regular season tickets to UCONN. I was able to take the kids. Basketball was just as good as regular season.

    UCONN Wins!!

by 3Gens on 3/17/10University of Connecticut - Storrs

Typical up and down play but in the end the team pulled together for the win. I think they can go all the way. Forwards did it in the first half and the guards in the second. They needed Dyson to step up and he did.

It's too bad the refs don't make a call when there's a foul...not for nothing, but the Louisville Cardinals are a very dirty team and they get away with it!!

    Unfortunately Slump Ruined Opportunity

by CTMountaineer on 2/23/10XL CENTER - Hartford

It was great to see two of the sport's legendary coaches duking it out, but The Mountaineers had trouble hitting even foul shots last night. It would be nice to see these teams meet again in the Conference Tournament on a neutral court.

awesome game. glad i was there to witness the domination. Calhoun's timeout and technical 47 seconds into the first half. Bob Huggins double technical 47 left in te second half. Kemba Walker's dunk with less than a minute left in the game to seal the deal.

    Never Foul Vaughn

by BMCQMAN on 2/15/10XL CENTER - Hartford

Great game. Atmosphere was good. UConn fans were great...that said, being a Bearcat alumni and fan, it was great to see CIncy win. Vaughn played great. He's been the glue that has held together the team between Huggins and Cronin. Can't say enough about him.

    uconn tickets at gampel

by QKH2432 on 1/7/10University of Connecticut - Storrs

the seat was very good and it was a chair back. I think you could sell the chairback seats for more money, so you should inform people that they are chairback in advance because they NON-chairback seats are very much undesirable because they cram people in and if you have a few fat people or inconsiderate people in your row, it is just terrible.

XL Center is a great place to watch college hoops. It's not too big - even the upper deck are all good seats.
