UConn Huskies Men’s Basketball History

The UConn Huskies men’s basketball team is a big reason why Connecticut has earned its nickname as “The Basketball Capital of the World.” Since the Huskies’ first season in 1900, UConn has captured six National Championships, along with 34 conference regular season titles and 11 conference tournament championships.

Launched as a conference member in the Athletic League of New England State Colleges, UConn helped form the New England Conference in 1923 and continued to the Yankee Conference from 1946 to 1976. After a handful of unaffiliated seasons, UConn became a founding member of the Big East Conference in 1979, and after a stretch in The American Athletic Conference starting in 2013, rejoined the Big East in 2020. UConn’s membership in the Big East alone accounts for 11 regular season conference wins and eight conference tournament crowns.

Across UConn’s 37 NCAA Tournament appearances, the Huskies have advanced to seven Final Fours. The team’s National Championship wins in 2023 and 2024 made UConn the eighth school to win back-to-back tournaments. Aside from March Madness, the Huskies men’s basketball team has appeared in the National Invitation Tournament 13 times and won in 1988.

Notable alumni include Ray Allen, Caron Butler, Ben Gordon, Richard Hamilton, Clifford Robinson and Kemba Walker.

UConn Huskies Men’s Basketball at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and PeoplesBank Arena

The UConn men’s basketball team split home games between Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs and PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford. Each season, the home schedule is divided approximately in half between the two venues. The tradition began in 1975 when PeoplesBank Arena, then known as Hartford Civic Center, opened and was paired with UConn’s previous on-campus arena, the Hugh S. Greer Field House. Gampel Pavilion inherited the shared schedule when it opened in 1990. Inside the Huskies’ two home arenas, Gampel Pavilion seats more than 10,000 guests, while PeoplesBank Arena holds a capacity of nearly 16,000 for basketball games.

  • Great value

by Tipofffffff on 3/17/10University of Connecticut - StorrsRating: 5 out of 5

I really like the idea of bringing the price down. As a result I took my 11th grade son and two of his friends to go and enjoy a game. Had the price been any higher, I would have stayed home and watched on T.V.

  • GO UCONN

by runnerkm on 3/17/10University of Connecticut - StorrsRating: 3 out of 5

It was an okay game. Luckily UCONN won but barely. It was actually pretty sad that the Northeastern fans, though smaller in number, were much louder than the UCONN fans. UCONN fans didn't get loud until the very end when the game was in doubt. Oh well, I'm glad I went because it will be the last time this year to see them play.

The seats were good. Atmosphere was exciting. The student sections were full of their school spirit..

NIT game was a lot of fun. Cheap price and it's usually tough to get regular season tickets to UCONN. I was able to take the kids. Basketball was just as good as regular season.

  • UCONN Wins!!

    by 3Gens on 3/17/10University of Connecticut - StorrsRating: 4 out of 5

Typical up and down play but in the end the team pulled together for the win. I think they can go all the way. Forwards did it in the first half and the guards in the second. They needed Dyson to step up and he did.

  • by pcabin on 3/1/10University of Connecticut - StorrsRating: 4 out of 5

It's too bad the refs don't make a call when there's a foul...not for nothing, but the Louisville Cardinals are a very dirty team and they get away with it!!

  • UConn rocks WVU

by massjhawk on 2/23/10XL CENTER - HartfordRating: 4 out of 5

Great college basketball experience with kudos going to the student section for keeping the energy level up during the game.

  • Unfortunately Slump Ruined Opportunity

by CTMountaineer on 2/23/10XL CENTER - HartfordRating: 5 out of 5

It was great to see two of the sport's legendary coaches duking it out, but The Mountaineers had trouble hitting even foul shots last night. It would be nice to see these teams meet again in the Conference Tournament on a neutral court.

  • Uconn Huskies on a roll...

by johnwallphenomenon on 2/23/10XL CENTER - HartfordRating: 5 out of 5

awesome game. glad i was there to witness the domination. Calhoun's timeout and technical 47 seconds into the first half. Bob Huggins double technical 47 left in te second half. Kemba Walker's dunk with less than a minute left in the game to seal the deal.

  • UConn dominated West Virginia

  • Never Foul Vaughn

by BMCQMAN on 2/15/10XL CENTER - HartfordRating: 4 out of 5

Great game. Atmosphere was good. UConn fans were great...that said, being a Bearcat alumni and fan, it was great to see CIncy win. Vaughn played great. He's been the glue that has held together the team between Huggins and Cronin. Can't say enough about him.

Awesome game! Great back and forth game. Great to see Marquette rally back and finally pull out a close win!

  • Uconn should have won!

  • uconn tickets at gampel

    by QKH2432 on 1/7/10University of Connecticut - StorrsRating: 4 out of 5

the seat was very good and it was a chair back. I think you could sell the chairback seats for more money, so you should inform people that they are chairback in advance because they NON-chairback seats are very much undesirable because they cram people in and if you have a few fat people or inconsiderate people in your row, it is just terrible.

  • UConn Mens Basketball vs. Notre Dame

by maximamike on 1/4/10XL CENTER - HartfordRating: 5 out of 5

XL Center is a great place to watch college hoops. It's not too big - even the upper deck are all good seats.

  • Seats??

by OhioJimB on 1/3/10XL CENTER - HartfordRating: 4 out of 5

I ordered these seats within an hour of single game tickets being available and wound up 10 rows from the top of the arena.
