UConn Huskies Men’s Basketball History

The UConn Huskies men’s basketball team is a big reason why Connecticut has earned its nickname as “The Basketball Capital of the World.” Since the Huskies’ first season in 1900, UConn has captured six National Championships, along with 34 conference regular season titles and 11 conference tournament championships.

Launched as a conference member in the Athletic League of New England State Colleges, UConn helped form the New England Conference in 1923 and continued to the Yankee Conference from 1946 to 1976. After a handful of unaffiliated seasons, UConn became a founding member of the Big East Conference in 1979, and after a stretch in The American Athletic Conference starting in 2013, rejoined the Big East in 2020. UConn’s membership in the Big East alone accounts for 11 regular season conference wins and eight conference tournament crowns.

Across UConn’s 37 NCAA Tournament appearances, the Huskies have advanced to seven Final Fours. The team’s National Championship wins in 2023 and 2024 made UConn the eighth school to win back-to-back tournaments. Aside from March Madness, the Huskies men’s basketball team has appeared in the National Invitation Tournament 13 times and won in 1988.

Notable alumni include Ray Allen, Caron Butler, Ben Gordon, Richard Hamilton, Clifford Robinson and Kemba Walker.

UConn Huskies Men’s Basketball at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and PeoplesBank Arena

The UConn men’s basketball team split home games between Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs and PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford. Each season, the home schedule is divided approximately in half between the two venues. The tradition began in 1975 when PeoplesBank Arena, then known as Hartford Civic Center, opened and was paired with UConn’s previous on-campus arena, the Hugh S. Greer Field House. Gampel Pavilion inherited the shared schedule when it opened in 1990. Inside the Huskies’ two home arenas, Gampel Pavilion seats more than 10,000 guests, while PeoplesBank Arena holds a capacity of nearly 16,000 for basketball games.

  • College Basketball at its finest

by Rimaspoli on 2/18/11XL Center - HartfordRating: 5 out of 5

...it has been a few years since I had witnessed a college basketball game live, and I am grateful this UConn vs Georgetown was the one I attended. What a game; addrenaline was flowing on the court and the stands, nip and tuck game, great individual performances with one reminding me of baskets generated at NBA All Star games. Big East ball is big time and I look forward to witnessing a few more this year and into years to come.

  • #17 Syracuse beats down #7 UConn

    by Cuse31 on 2/4/11XL Center - HartfordRating: 5 out of 5

Great game! Syracuse battled back in the first half to take a 1 point lead. Excellent second half, they never let down despite some very nice three point shots by UConn. Syracuse emerges victorious breaking a 5 game losing streak. No better team to break a losing streak against! Great game.

  • Good battle between two top 20 NCAA bound teams

by Anonymous on 2/4/11XL Center - HartfordRating: 4 out of 5

XL Center is an aging facility with narrow corridors and long lines for bathrooms and concessions. There are a large number of parking facilities and good restaurants and bars in the area but the arena is strictly for seeing a game and there is nothing modern or luxurious about it. Never fear you can still get an overpriced beer for $9 just like the modern facilities.

Although not as great an experience as Gampel, still awesome.

by SHUGWHITE on 1/25/11XL Center - HartfordRating: 4 out of 5

HOW CAN YOU MISS WITH A UCONN BASKETBALL GAME! THE GAME AS ALWAYS WAS FUN AND FULL OF ACTION. NOW LETS LOOK AT THE $9.00 BEERS AND GARBAGE FOR A HALFTIME SHOW. UGH! COME ON GUYS YOU CAN SURELY DO BETTER THAN A HUMAN SLINKY. HOW LAME! AND WHY DO THE PATRONS THAT ALREADY PAID A PREMIUM FOR A TICKET ALSO HAVE TO BE SUBJECTED TO RIDICULOUS BEVERAGE PRICES!

The game was unbelievable.... exciting and entertaining~ The fans were so spirited and I found that it was contagious. I just wish that Uconn students would consider going to the GIRLS' games as well. They, too, deserve the support of their peers and fans..... it seems that the fans for the girls' team are "older".

by stemo on 1/6/11XL Center - HartfordRating: 5 out of 5

didn't expect to wait the whole game for it to get exciting, but that's what you can expect from the Uconn men's basketball team. Made for a great evening overall. Hope to see more from the huskies.

  • UCONN dominates an Ivy! No surprise.

Game was good, seats were good. Will call was the way to go. XL Center needs a makeover in a bad way.

  • UCONN Hoops

by Kidlowe on 12/4/10XL Center - HartfordRating: 4 out of 5

It has been dissappointing to see that the UCONN basketball teams have been playing in front of less than full crowds. I don't know if it's a sign of the economy or that fans are taking a wait and see attitude, especially with Calhoun's young pups. But I will say this, UCONN basketball is great and relatively inexpensive evening out. If you don't go, you'll miss seeing the best collegian in America play in person. Yeah, that's right, our own Kemba Walker.

The basketball game itself was fairly boring - I think the players were tired from their recent roadtrip. But they managed to pull off the win, but not by much; so that in itself was fun to watch. Plus it makes for a great family outing. I felt that the ticket price was a little steep though.

  • lackluster performance

by phejos on 3/20/10XL CENTER - HartfordRating: 3 out of 5

for the return of Jim Calhoun to the bench, his team really stunk it up losing to Cincinnati - again.

  • Great game

by NEUfan on 3/18/10University of Connecticut - StorrsRating: 5 out of 5

Although the outcome could have been better, the game was terrific. Gampel is a nice place to watch a game and the crowd is definitely into it. The price was right. It was an awesome evening to spend with my boyfriend!

  • B-Ball is good

by GaraWillum on 3/17/10University of Connecticut - StorrsRating: 4 out of 5

The basketball, as always, is exciting at UConn--the caliber of play, the venue, etc. This event didn't disappoint. Ticketmaster made my event purchase convenient, cost-effective. I would recommend it.

  • Uconn v. Northeastern

by snowiii on 3/17/10University of Connecticut - StorrsRating: 4 out of 5

exciting game...Uconn on the ropes and fought back tonight...Better opponent will shut down any interior avenue and the outside shooting is just abysmal...
