  • A great pairing

by jonjuice on 11/10/13Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 4 out of 5

A wonderful collaboration of these two wonderful artists....The quartet and Nellie. Voice and string textures were amazing together. She's a fabulous marimba player, singer, and pianist, not to mention her songwriting. Felt so lucky to hear them together.

My husband and I were looking forward to seeing turtle Island in person after years of listening to CDs. but to have Nellie McKay perform with them was just icing on the cake. What a treat! Better than we expected.

This group is a must see. They are truly amazing! They performed a suite of four Jimi Hendrix's pieces taken from his Electric Ladyland album which was outstanding. The group is so tight and the improv. is second to none. The cellist, Mark Summer (co founder of TIQ) also performed a cello rendition of "Little Wing". Mark is the best cellist I have ever heard. He doesn't just play cello; he turns his cello into a bass and percussion thus giving one the experience of hearing three instruments in one. He does it flawlessly, changing from arco to pizz without missing a beat. He and his cello are as one. Another highlight was David Balakrihnan's "Tree of Life". This is an enjoyable, thoughtful piece with varying moods that reflects many different musical genres. David is not only an outstanding musician, and composer, but a very good story teller. His explanations of his piece with demonstrations from the quartet was very entertaining indeed. Violinist Mad's Tolling and violist Jeremy Kittel are the newest members of the quartet. They are both extremely outstanding performers as well. My husband and son also loved the quartet. My teenage son said he was blown away! Turtle Island is a must see!
