Turnover in Concert

With a name like Turnover, this band has always been prepared for change. And since their founding in 2009, that's exactly what they've endured, with major shifts in lineup, location, and sound. Still, they have always stayed true to their DIY visions. Formed in Virginia Beach, with lead vocalist Austin Getz, drummer Casey Getz (his brother), bassist Danny Dempsey, and guitarists Alex Dimaiuat and Kyle Kojan, Turnover started out as pure pop-punk.

They released a quick, punchy slice of punk with their 2011 self-titled EP and were soon signed to Run for Cover Records. They toured relentlessly going forward, alongside bands like Light Years and Citizen, but soon Dimaiuat and Kojan would depart the band. Austin then took up guitar and the band released their full-length debut, ‘Magnolia,' in 2013. The slimmed-down lineup also helped smooth out Turnover's sound. While still centered on peppy punk riffs, ‘Magnolia' revealed a far more melodic and diligent brand of emo. They soon took to the road, supporting bands like I Am the Avalanche and Major League throughout the U.S. and Europe. They also joined pop-punk pioneers New Found Glory on tour as they prepared for the release of their sophomore album, one that would mark another drastic change in both the band's sound and size, with the addition of guitarist Eric Soucy.

Second album ‘Peripheral Vision' ditched the punk attitude and tension in favor of rich shoegaze textures and soft dream pop. It proved a successful shift for the band as it hit No. 4 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart. They eventually headlined dates around the U.S. and U.K. in support of the album.

In another big move soon thereafter, frontman Austin Getz headed west, settling into life in California wine country as the band began work on their third LP, 2017's ‘Good Nature.' The location change would infuse its way into the album, which glows with hazy, sun-soaked melodies. But as the band prepared for its release, they would experience another reshaping, as Soucy was forced to leave the lineup. Still, somehow, they persist, selling out shows with bands like The Story So Far, as they continue to refine their sound.

  • Magic

by Em on 11/23/22The Depot - Salt Lake CityRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely stellar, the openers Horse Jumper Of Love and Yumi Zouma were so rad. Turnover is purely bliss and live was absolute magic. Their stage presence and sound are primo!! & S/O to The Depot your venue is sick. (,:

by Mishy on 11/23/22Spirit Hall - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

They put on an awesome live show! They sound exactly the same live as they do on the record. I'd see them a hundred times if I could!! Great venue too!

  • Boring

by Bill on 11/23/22The Depot - Salt Lake CityRating: 1 out of 5

Very boring I was yawning all the time. Waste of my $40.

  • Felt like a dream

by Clémence on 11/11/22The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The stage was so cool with the lights and the background. Got to discover two new amazing bands : Horse Jumper of Love and Yumi Zouma. Then came Turnover on stage, they played some songs from the new album and from the old ones too which was just amazing. They played just perfectly and the voice of Austin sounds like heaven. Best night of my life probably!! ( just very sad that I couldn’t get any merch from my fav band )

  • Cool

by Jim on 6/18/22The Regent Theater - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

It was cool. They played music I enjoyed and I had a good time. Lol

  • Rude crowd

by Barryz on 11/10/21Paradise Rock Club presented by Citizens - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

Huge number of people talked loudly though the opening bands’ sets. Incredibly rude and self centered people. Additionally, large number of people weren’t wearing masks and management did nothing about it. It’s not like MA isn’t once again in the red on COVID rates or anything….

  • An interesting venue

by Single long hair on 11/10/21Paradise Rock Club presented by Citizens - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Went to paradise rock club and the venue itself was interesting. For parking, we parked in the garage right next door at the arena. They had two VERY annoying pillars right in front of the stage so it is important to get there early if you want to see the bands faces. For the show, the bands were great as always, BUT showed up an hour and a half late so by 11pm, the headlining band was only halfway done with their set. This was annoying considering everything was affected from waiting an extra half hour outside to no one at the mercy table for the first 30 minutes once inside, and the bands seeming to rush through their sets.

  • Great show

  • Exceeded expectations

by KennWith2Ns on 12/21/19Theatre of Living Arts - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Turnover was worth the price of admission and Men I Trust was a pleasant surprise even if their set seemed too long. The vibe of the entire show was extremely chill. Turnovers new material obviously was on full display and played better live than on their album. Aside from a few small technical glitches they sounded absolutely amazing. I wish they would have played different songs from Peripheral Vision (Like Slow Disappearing, Diazepam and I Would Hate You If I Could) but the album, my personal favorite, was well represented with at least 4 songs with the crowd mover Humming serving as the closer. The venue was packed but not overcrowded and despite a few small altercations upstairs was a very enjoyable experience. Great show overall.

  • Band was good

by Maria on 12/17/19Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

Entry was fast and easy, venue is large and didn’t feel overcrowded. Restrooms could use a little ventilation because they all smelled very strongly and felt foggy. Ac was too high in the ballroom, i could feel the cold current hitting me and had to wear my jacket inside which is odd for a room full of people dancing. Sound quality on the first band “The Turnover” was not good, highs were too high and overall it wasn’t well mixed, sounded like a garage band on an amateur gig. Sound quality on the second band “Men I Trust” was great, everything was smooth and enjoyable. The bar is not as expensive as MSG’s which is good.

  • Best concert I’ve been to this year

The whole atmosphere of the masquerade combined with the sound and performance that turnover gave combined to make one of the most memorable events of my life. Truly a 10/10 experience.

  • Turnover, again an amazing experience.

by GriffinMo on 6/24/16The Sinclair - CambridgeRating: 4 out of 5

Turnover as usual played amazing. The crowd had amazing vibes and I very much engaged in the crowd. Everyone was energized, except Turnover themselves. Almost a vibe killer, but still worth the ticket.

  • Nothing short of amazing

    by OwenMay11 on 6/24/16The Sinclair - CambridgeRating: 5 out of 5

A few of my friends brought me to see Turnover in Cambridge, MA on June 21st, 2016. I had listened to one turnover song prior to this concert, so overall I was not very familiar with them. The opening acts were decent, but turnover completely stole the show. They sounded AMAZING live and won me over completely. They play each of their 11 songs off their Peripheral Vision album, and, after a "One more song!" chant from the crowd, played an encore song. After the concert I immediately went to the merch table and bought their Periphrial Vision album and a t-shirt. I couldn't believe I only paid $13 to see them play. Please don't miss out on Turnover if they're coming to a venue near you. If I could I would drive to their next show to see them again; they were that good.
