Turandot and the subject of agism

by Hansmeister on 2/6/11Keller Auditorium - Portland

Set designs were well thought out. The eerie feeling that one was witnessing the photos of victims of any number of historical atrocities; Dachau, Sarajevo, was thrust into the viewers soul. Enter Turandot, the storied Princess of allure that drove men mad. Well, I thought that I was looking at Hillary Clinton. My word how old and matronly was this woman? I was reluctant to allow the prejudice of agism to creep into the review but this woman looked more like a matronly prison matron than an alluring Princess.

We enjoyed the music of Puccini, no issue with the orchestra. The voices were very good other than the occasional could not hear the tenor very well. The weak point of the production was its staging. It distracted from the music and the story. We found a number of aspects clumsy . One is the tenor singing Nessun dorma sitting down and the same could be said of Turandot's aria also in that position. Turandot's removal of her cape was totally pointless and hard to do , so it distracted. The pictures distracted , they were too big, looked like people off the street , not always used apropiately they did not capture the drama as intended. Also things like dead Liu remaining covered on the floor while the tenor and Turandot sing their love song . The tenor came across as heartless as Turandot in his reaction to Liu 's death. Liu crawling towards Turandot was annoying. . It was as if having chosen such a minimalist approach all you could do is have people on chairs and crawling on the floor . There were places in the opera where audience should have applauded but didn't not necessarily because of the singing but because it did not draw them into the story. My reaction represents the view of all four of us who attended. I'm Italian and I grew up with Opera.

    Turandot staging was weak

A very spartan, "modern" set and staging along with the cast singing will sitting, reclining. Not very inspiring.

    Turandot in Concert

by Elegancia on 8/7/09Lyric Opera House - Baltimore

Most disappointing. The tenor that sang "Nessun Dorma" gave a very anemic performance. No comparison to L. Pavarotti. The opera hall had an air conditioning deficiency making the experience most uncomfortable.

    Turnadot was fantastic

by operafanita on 7/17/09Lyric Opera House - Baltimore

The production at Kennedy was opulent and rich; the concert at the Lyric was intimate and pure. True and lovely. I cannot say how happy I was to be there. Many good wishes for the Lyric to once again present opera.

    Outstanding In Everyway!!!!!

by MinistersWife on 7/14/09Lyric Opera House - Baltimore

My husband and I experience the concert of a lifetime!!!! Placido Domingo was amazing conducting the NSO, and the soloists were outstanding. The tenor won my heart as did his father and his servant/nurse. Ping, Pang, Pong were so delightful ... especially Pang. It was a night that we shall never ever forget. We do so hope that a opera company will return to Baltimore since our company declared bankruptcy and that Placido will return to sing for us as he promised.

    opera in Baltimore

by puccinifan on 7/14/09Lyric Opera House - Baltimore

My wife and I were both glad that we went. Luckily we found a parking spot on the street not too far away; otherwise it could be a long walk. The opera itself was great even without any scenery; too bad though it couldn't have been stage in a larger setting. The only negative as far as I was concerned was that there was no separate line for those--like myself--who already had paid for their tickets online and merely needed to pick them up. We had to wait in the same lines as those who had no tickets. That made for a long wait.

    Turandot the Opera

by OperaMan on 7/14/09Lyric Opera House - Baltimore

The concert perfomance of Turandot was good. Having seen the opera twice before it was a bit disappointing to see just a concert version and not the full production. The one tenore was very disappointng, it was like he really did not want to be there

    turandot in concert

by sharonhw on 7/13/09Lyric Opera House - Baltimore

Was wonderful. I truly wanted to see the opera but couldn't get the scheduling together. This was by far much better than missing it. The music, characters, chorus and all were the same even without the dress. This is a very close second to going to the opera. I'm hoping that the bus between Balto and DC will get worked out for the opera. But I'm also hoping that more 'in concert' offerings will be held. Just great!

    Turandot in Concert

This was the most enjoyable concert. Other than the actual opera with costumes & staging, which I understand is very expensive, this is a wonderful way to enjoy the music!
