Tapestry could have been a wonderful tribute

by jhg313 on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

What could have been a beautiful tribute to a talented song writer with a huge following turned out to be a disappointment in the sound of the lead singer. Se had laryngitis and did her best to carry the show, it went downhill as she strained her voice after the early onset. The musicians were very talented and helped carry the show but the show did depend on the one woman's voice. Her backup singer was not able to carry on for both of them. I felt that the show should have been cancelled and money refunded to the ticket holders. There were many patrons that were going to get their money back, so they thought, during the intermission. The high price of the tickets should govern that the show be up to a higher standard. I think the show would have been sensational had the lead singer's voice been in top shape.

Tapestry: A Tribute to Carole King

by MMB89 on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

Tapestry was indeed unforgettable. The lead singer was very ill. She had a bad case of laryngitis and a cold and never should have tried to sing. Her speaking voice cracked and was not audible and her singing voice was off key at times and amounted to a lot of screeching as she tried to power through the songs. Unfortunately the band was not strong enough to pick up the pace and carry the show for her. There is no question the show should have been canceled - at least half the audience left during intermission and more continued to walk during the second act. The show just got worse and worse. I have no idea if the show would have been any good without the lead's cold but I kind of doubt it would have been fabulous. I give her a lot of credit for trying but it wasn't fair to the audience to make us suffer through such an uncomfortable evening. I mean it was really terrible.

    AWFUL

by Ediepoo on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

Terrible, not worthy of presenting to any audience Anywhere. Bad sound no personality Off key consistently. Difficult to identify the Tune they were trying to play. The "tossing of hair was distracting and juvenile."

    Disappointing

by BocaCarol on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

The lead singer had laryngitis so her voice wasn't very good. The sound system made it sound like she was shouting at times. There were 4 or 5 other musicians, including a female backup singer, so I would have thought some of the other musicians should have jumped in and performed some of the songs, since she was obviously having some issues with her voice. It was also disappointing that there wasn't much conversation from the performers. In the case of an artist like Carole King, whose music was performed by many other artists, they should have provided more background on some of the songs, such as when it was popular, which artist performed it, etc. I was also expecting a medley that would have included more of her music as well as some background history on Carole King herself. They did perform most of her most famous songs, but also threw in a couple obscure ones that we weren't familiar with. When we go to a show like this, we want to hear the music that we know and learn some interesting information about the artist herself as well as the group doing the actual show (where are they from, how long have they been doing this show, etc., etc.). . It looked like quite a few people left at the intermission, so I suspect others shared my opinions of this program. The lead singer never introduced the other members of the band, and overall, the performance was less polished than we were expecting.

The evening was horrible. We very rarely are able to splurge for an evening out. That's why we were looking forward to this event. The lead singer announced that she had laryngitis and her voice was lost in the terrible acoustics. We were truly miserable until we finally left. I have been trying to navigate your website to ask for a refund. Please call me.

    laryngitis at tapestry

by chr24f on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

the lead singer of this group had laryngitis. she was NOT able to sing well. the band had little push/drive, perhaps because of it. who let this show go on, and why. it was NOT fair to the audience, and the lead singer who seemed like she was most likely VERY talented (on those rare ocassions when her larynx didnt shift keys on her) could have done some serious damage to her voice. it was a VERY frustrating evening. i would love answers to my 2 questions, just dont know who to contact. i called a # on web site for company that booked them, but they did not call me back.

Tapestry: A Tribute to Carole King was forgettable

by JBDL on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

I usually don't enjoy tribute bands as they never live up to the original act; however, Carole King's music is so wonderful that my thought was how bad could this be. Well, the pianist played very well but her singing was less than stellar. True she had laryngitis and perhaps the concert should have been canceled as she was incapable of truly singing a song well. The guitar players were good as was the drummer. The back-up singer hardly had any role to speak of and perhaps she should have tried to carry the show since the main singer couldn't sing. Regardless, I found the singer's voice, even when she wasn't losing it, to be somewhat as I said less than stellar.

Worst show I have seen in my 12 years in Florida. Lead singer could not carry a note and appeared I'll. Show should not have gone on.

    Tapestry

by ronrik on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

The show was bad. While I understand the main singer had laryngitis, there should have been an understudy for her or the other female singer should have done the singing. I don't ever recall anything so unprofessional and I've gone to many concerts. We thought we'd give it a try again after the intermission, but we left just after it started again because it was embarrassing.

I do not think the performance was good; probably because the lead singer had laryngitis.. .I would have liked to know a little more about Carole King's life..

    Disappointed

by BoyntonBeachBabe on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

I was really looking forward to this show but was, unfortunately, disappointed in the performance and the venue. The lead singer had laryngitis and should not have been performing at all. I love the music of Carole King but the lead singer's voice just couldn't do it justice. It was even difficult to understand her when she spoke. The other performers were fine (although I didn't care for some of the arrangements) but the concert as a whole was a huge disappointment. Our seats were in the first row of the small back "mezzanine", just behind the entrance doors. There was a constant stream of people walking around, coming in and out. What a distraction. I later learned that, in many cases, the activity was due to people going out to the box office to try and get their money back. After the intermission we were able to move up because many people just left. The room was also uncomfortably cold! This was the first time I attended a show at FAU and don't know if I'll try again.

    Unhappy with the show!

by Anonymous on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

The show should have be rescheduled! The female singer/piano player had a problem with her voice & had a hard time speaking, never mind singing. She announced this before the concert began and asked the audience to sing along with her. She tried hard, but should have been better. Also, close to half the songs played were ones not that familiar with the audience. Carol King had many great songs from which more could have been chosen from.

    tapestry - not so good!

by JBDL on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

the event was probably only fair because the lead singer had throat issues. maybe the event should have been rescheduled.

    Nice show

by fun60sguy on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

In spite of having a slight case of laryngitis, the lead singer was very good. The band could have used a saxaphone but did a nice job. They didn't waste much time in between songs and went right from one song to another. Very nice 2 hr set with a 20 min. break. Enjoyable night if you like Carole King and her music.

    Disappointed

by Uneekguy on 10/21/14FAU - Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium - Boca Raton

At First, It looked like a great production but when it started, It was obvious something was wrong. I could tell that the performer has a Carole King Voice BUT she was ill and couldn't perform at her best. We felt as though the show SHOULD have been canceled but that's not how it goes. We left during intermission. Overall, I would like to see TAPESTRY again under better circumstances but this particular performance was a bust

I think that the performance should have been cancelled since the lead singer was sick. The music drowned out the singers . I give this a very poor review
