About

Trampled by Turtles are from Duluth, Minnesota, where frontman Dave Simonett initially formed the group as a side project in 2003. At the time, Simonett had lost most of his music gear, thanks to a group of enterprising car thieves who'd ransacked his vehicle while he played a show with his previous band. Left with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, he began piecing together a new band, this time taking inspiration from bluegrass, folk, and other genres that didn't rely on amplification. Simonett hadn't played any bluegrass music before, and he filled his lineup with other newcomers to the genre, including fiddler Ryan Young (who'd previously played drums in a speed metal act) and bassist Tim Saxhaug. Along with mandolinist Erik Berry and banjo player Dave Carroll, the group began carving out a fast, frenetic sound that owed as much to rock & roll as bluegrass.

Trampled by Turtles released their first record, Songs from a Ghost Town, in 2004. In a genre steeped in tradition, the album stood out for its contemporary sound, essentially bridging the gap between the bandmates' background in rock music and their new acoustic leanings. Blue Sky and the Devil (2005) and Trouble (2007) explored a similar sound, but it wasn't until 2008 and the band's fourth release, Duluth, that Trampled by Turtles received recognition by the bluegrass community. Duluth peaked at number eight on the Billboard bluegrass chart and paved the way for a number of festival appearances. When Palomino arrived in 2010, it was met with an even greater response, debuting at the top of the bluegrass chart and remaining in the Top Ten for more than a year. Two years later, their crossover appeal landed them at number 32 on the Billboard 200 pop charts upon the release of their sixth album, Stars and Satellites. In addition to major bluegrass and folk festivals, they began showing up at Coachella, ACL Fest, and Lollapalooza. The official concert album, Live at First Avenue, followed in 2013, recorded at Minnesota's most famous venue. A year later, the band returned with the darker-toned Wild Animals, which bettered its studio predecessor on the album charts, reaching number 29 on Billboard. Countless tours, playing venues like the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta, with bands like Lord Huron, Wilco, Caamp, Mt Joy and Deer Tick to name a few have followed. 2022 will see the release of the band's latest body of work called Alpenglow which was produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.

Such Good Music, So Much Energy

by 3R1K on 12/6/10Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater - Sioux Falls

Trampled By Turtles blew me away. They blew the audience away. It was over an hour of high energy, amazing music that made you move to the music and smile constantly. They cut blue grass across so many genres; I don't think you could find someone who wouldn't leave one of their shows a more fulfilled person.

    Best Show Yet!

by easchwen on 10/2/10Birdys - Indianapolis

This was the second time I saw Trampled in concert, and they exceeded my expectations once again! They're the best band I've ever seen live, and their opening act, These United States, were also quite good.

I've seen this band every time they've played in NY the past two years and they kill it every time. Flat out some of the best musicains touring right now. I think it's time they graduate to a larger venue though. I'd love to see them at Irving Plaza.

TBT bringing it fast and shreddy!

    by Yrock22 on 5/15/10Ogden Theatre - Denver

Wow what a great show. My first time seeing Paper Bird and they were a treat, not only did the ladies in the center have some pipes but they weren't hard to look at either. Trampled by Turtles are consumate showmen and once again brought the house down amid frantic mandolin riffs and a hell of a lot of clapping and stomping! If you have never experienced TBT do yourself a favor and look them up.

Trampled By Turtles Awesome -- Paper Birds - Awful

by Amory on 5/15/10Ogden Theatre - Denver

We arrived at the show around 8:30 - the first opening act came on, they were excellent, creative, fun, and upbeat. Then the second opening act came on, they played for what seemed like forever, their sound mix was terrible, the three singers kept singing over each other and seemed more interested in dancing that singing. Although Paper Bird's music was creative, they didn't seem to have the musicianship or the talent to pull it off. Then around 11:30 p.m. Trampled by Turtles came on, they played their hearts out. The set was a mix of new and old songs, both upbeat and mellow. Best of all it seemed like they were having even more fun than the audience. After an awesome set they came back for an encore, and played Pink Floyd, "Outskirts" and Bob Dylan. The show was worth double the price of admission and I would recommend seeing them live to any fan. Maybe in a few years they'll come back and play red rocks.

Worthy of a Star on the Wall

by TurtlesKickedIt on 4/12/10First Avenue - Minneapolis

TBT absolutely rocked First Ave on Saturday night, thrilling set of Palomino (cover to cover) and some oldies but goodies to close the night out... once again, the Turtles kicked it and turned out this historic venue. Well done fellas, well done.
