Tower of Power on Tour

When Tower of Power took the stage at The Fillmore in San Francisco for their 40th anniversary show in 2008, it was as full circle as live music moments get. A recorded introduction by the dearly departed, legendary promoter Bill Graham — who gave the band their big break and signed them to his label in the late '60s — kicked off the energetic musical explosion that Tower of Power have never stopped bringing to the stage. The Tower of Power five-piece horn section, led by founding members Emilio Castillo on tenor sax and Stephen "Doc" Kupka on baritone sax, has been the driving force behind a group with over 60 touring members in its history. The R&B funk and soul revue also features furious percussionists, guitar, keys and more vocal blends than you can imagine. The elite collection of musicians have never stopped touring, and whether at a casino theater or a classic concert hall, a Tower of Power show is always gonna be a kickin' good time. Their Oakland-born sound emerged in 1968, and even after 50 years their shows still manage to feel contemporary.

Tower of Power in Concert

In 1968, Oakland's Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka formed a band with the goal of playing at San Francisco's iconic Fillmore theater. By 1970, Tower of Power were not only on the stage, but signed to Bill Graham's San Francisco Records for their debut album East Bay Grease. When they moved over to Warner Bros Records in 1972, they started to leave a timeless mark beyond the Bay Area with the release of now-classic albums — Bump City, Tower of Power, Urban Renewal and more. Throughout their 19 albums, including 2018's Soul Side of Town, the band have covered every inch of R&B, soul and funk, constantly evolving and paving the way for many other artists.

Tower of Power 3/14/23 - The Factory STL

by JR on 3/17/24The Factory - St. Louis

This group never disappoints, but this night was special. This was the first gig for a new lead singer (Joshua John, I think, though the name may be wrong), but he did a FANTASTIC job. It was the best version of “You’re Still a Young Man” that I’ve ever heard. Emilio and Doc are still legendary as well. Go see them if you have the chance!

    Excellent

by FJ on 3/17/24The Factory - St. Louis

It took me 56 years to finally see Tower of Power even though we're both from the Bay Area. What a great group of musicians and if you can get to see them. JUST GO SEE THEM! They are truly an American Gem. If you don't know what is hip.. You will when you leave! The venue "The Factory"is outstanding as far as I'm concerned. Floor Seating was comfortable and the view of the stage was perfect. The sound quality and lighting were exceptional.

This was a great show. Wonderful music, terrific musicians, and also very entertaining. Amazing to see these older performers who’ve been around for 50 years still performing at a high level. I will always attend their concerts when possible.

    Tightest band ever

by Kburnley on 3/17/24The Factory - St. Louis

Attending a Tower of Power concert was an electrifying experience that exceeded all expectations. From the moment the band took the stage, the energy was palpable, and the crowd was immediately drawn into their infectious groove. Each member showcased unparalleled talent, effortlessly weaving together a fusion of funk, soul, and R&B that kept the audience on their feet throughout the entire show. The tightness of the band's performance was truly remarkable, with every horn blast, guitar riff, and drum fill executed with precision and passion. Tower of Power's legendary horn section delivered soul-stirring solos and harmonies that sent chills down the spine, while the rhythm section laid down irresistibly funky grooves that had everyone dancing in the aisles. But beyond their musical prowess, what truly set Tower of Power apart was their infectious enthusiasm and genuine connection with the audience. Whether through humorous anecdotes between songs or heartfelt interactions with fans, the band created a sense of camaraderie and joy that was impossible not to be swept up in. From classic hits to new material, Tower of Power delivered a setlist that satisfied longtime fans and newcomers alike, leaving everyone in attendance craving more by the end of the night. It was a night filled with unforgettable moments, soulful melodies, and non-stop fun—a testament to the enduring legacy and timeless appeal of Tower of Power.

    Stellar production/performance. Great venue.

by Hoho/PhantomJr on 3/7/24OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino - Niagara Falls

My first time to OLG Stage gotta say I was impressed. Top notch. And of course the band was great as always, I have seen them multiple times Tower of Power never disappoints. Seeing them here just added to it was all. And Ray Greene was on fire! I feel privileged to have seen them with him (this show being his last gig with them this stint with the band). Members have come and gone of course and while we miss past (and passed) members….ToP always find tremendous players as to fill the gaps and tonight was no different, and I’m sure the next singer will be great too… but we got a special night in Niagara Falls that night…thank you Ray…and thank you all of the members of the great ToP - we love you!

    Rock & Soul

by MGTabag on 2/20/24Nugget Casino Resort - Sparks

TOP put on a stellar performance last Saturday night. The talent of those musicians is amazing. The vocals and trombone by Ray Greene was awesome. They had the crowd rockin and a rollin and even slow dancing to You’re Still a Young Man. I would see them again the next time they come to town!

    Amazing!

by TOP Fan on 2/20/24Nugget Casino Resort - Sparks

I have seen Tower of Power multiple times over the past 40 years and they are just as good today as they were the first time I saw them in 1975. Unfortunately, the venue (Nugget Ballroom) wasn't very good. The audience seats were so close together, both sideways and front and back, that we felt like we are jammed in like sardines. I will definitely be looking to see Tower of Power again, but if they are at this venue I will pass.
