  • Long Live Toubab Krewe

by GeeTarFan on 2/1/14The Church - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

My favorite musical tricksters are Toubab Krewe, and last night at The Church in Boston they again delighted and amazed the dancing, bobbing crowd by pushing the boundaries of recognizable genres, categories, rhythms, and jams. Lewis Hyde, MacArthur genius winner and author of Trickster Makes This World, argues that “...the origins, liveliness, and durability of cultures requires figures whose function is to uncover and disrupt the very things the cultures are based on." He calls these energizing figures “tricksters” and they “are regularly honoured as the creators of culture.” Music historians and other sound freaks will be talking about Toubab 50 years from now as one of the most truly innovative, highly skilled, multi-genre, boundary-breaking synthesizers of West African and American rock traditions. I’ve seen them live many times over the past 6 years and their trickster treats are as musically stimulating and subversive as ever. Tired of the old sounds? Check ‘em out.

  • TK was great

by Dulciman on 11/10/13Revolution Live - Ft LauderdaleRating: 4 out of 5

Loved this group ever since I caught them at the Mushroom STage at Wanee - they've got a very good thing going, combining world music with old timey and flat-out rock and roll - a sound like no other group out there I've seen - I'd travel some distance to see them again - venue is great, too --

Amazaazaazazing. So many talented musicians on one stage.

  • Infamous Stringdusters were awesome!

Great stage presence, they had smiles on their faces the whole time, which really helped set the mood.

  • Infamous Stringdusters impressed, Toubab deafened

    by Infamous555 on 10/16/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

Both the bass on Inf Strings and Toubab was too loud. Inf Strings miking was superb except that the bass was a bit loud. Overall, I think the volume for even them could have been lowered a bit. Generally, I don't wear ear plugs for a bluegrass show, but I thought it better judgment to do so for Inf String. I would not stop me from seeing them again. They were exceptionally friendly in the lobby. Toubab has an excellent groove, but the bass was deafening. I could not stay in the seating areas even with ear plugs. Anyone who listened to that show without them now has some permanent hearing impairment. Interesting mix of music, but when your clothes are shaking, it's too loud. Did I mention that it was too loud?

  • what happened to TK?

by ssathens on 10/4/11Brighton Music Hall - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

i was pretty disappointed. i saw them in athens, GA once and they were freaking incredible. i was so excited to see them in boston and i didn't stay for more than three songs. the arrangement was completely different, i wasn't sure if the entire ensemble was there. typically there are not really vocals and the electric guitar happening as i was leaving was not what i signed up for. my friend and i each paid $18 and i felt terrible for recommending the show so convincingly to her. at least the tim gearan band at atwoods is never a disappointment. so we headed there and had a fantastic night as usual.
