Toronto Maple Leafs History

The Toronto Maple Leafs have 13 Stanley Cup Championships and six division championships, with more than 60 former players, coaches and executives in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Maple Leafs were one of the NHL's founding teams in 1917. They originally were known as the Arenas and then the St. Patricks before taking their current name in 1927 after Conn Smythe bought the franchise.

The team won two Stanley Cup Championships in the NHL's first five years and returned to the finals in 1932 behind the "Kid Line" of eventual Hall of Famers Charlie Conacher, Joe Primeau, and Busher Jackson. In 1942, they defeated the Detroit Red Wings in seven games to win the first of five Stanley Cup Championships under coach Hap Day. The addition the following year of center Ted Kennedy helped the Leafs maintain their dominance, and resulted in another title in 1951.

The Leafs won three Stanley Cup Championships in a row starting in 1962, and another in the 1966-1967 season, thanks to a roster brimming with players who would end up in the Hall of Fame: George Armstrong, Johnny Bower, Red Kelly, Dave Keon, Tim Horton, Allan Stanley, Bob Pulford, and Frank Mahovlich.

The team returned to the conference finals in 1992-1993 and 1993-1994, then again in 1998-1999 — the latter trip powered by eventual franchise scoring leader Mats Sundin. The Toronto Maple Leafs have made the Playoffs a total of 72 times to date.

    Where's the atmosphere gone?

by BHood on 12/17/09Air Canada Centre - Toronto

As an avid Leaf game attendee for several years now, I have watched the ACC take a horrific nose dive in arena atmosphere. The lack of crowd participation (zamboni race?), music to get you pumped, several GET LOUD episodes, the infamous "movin' on up" seat switch song, etc. is but a few things to mention. Carlton is barely noticable. Did I mention the cold, expensive pizza?

It was very easy to get to the Air Canada Centre via the PATH, the facility was clean, fans were respectful, and the game was great. Negative was the price of beer was quite expensive.

    ACC sucks

by Nothappy123 on 12/7/09Air Canada Centre - Toronto

I had great seats, first row, upper level right at centre ice. Because they didn't sell enough tickets, they closed the upper bowl and moved us to the lower bowl but they gave me crappy seats up high and in the corner. I was very disappointed with the seats

Maple Leafs vs Tampa Bay Lightening

Leafs play much improved. Goaltending solid. Phil Kessel played a strong first game. Leafs need to close with a few victories.

    My Habs Won in Overtime!

by LongHairLonglac on 10/24/09Air Canada Centre - Toronto

I went to see my favourite team the Mtl Canadiens take on the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first game of the season. It was the first time I was ever at the Air Canada Centre. I was very impressed in how easy it was to pick up our tickets, then being showed to our seats by an usher. We were sitting in the Accessible Section. I was able to see the whole ice surface from my location in the arena. Ticket prices were reasonable, and am happy I was able to obtain them by ordering from Ticketmaster. Excellent Service!

    Leafs were disappointing...

by BHood on 10/14/09Air Canada Centre - Toronto

The new look of the ACC was fantastic. Too bad I couldn't say the same about the Leafs.

    Maple Whiffs

by ScottR on 10/12/09Air Canada Centre - Toronto

If you're a golfer and familier with the term "whiff," that pretty much describes the Leafs performance against the Pens. 2 shots in the first period? That's not a typo, 2 shots. It was a pathetic display particular for this early in the season. Great setting, lousy game.

    Leafs game was fun!

by jdwatson47 on 9/21/09Air Canada Centre - Toronto

This was my first time at the ACC and it was an excellent venue. We were very far from the ice in the standing room section and the view of the game was still exceptional. Great fun!

There was a lot of fighting!

by hockeyman11 on 9/20/09Air Canada Centre - Toronto

I thought that the game was really good. The Leafs got off to a really good start. In the second period, though, they ran into some penalty trouble and were down 4 to 2. In the third period, on a 5 on 3, they scored one. On another 5 on 3, they scored one more to tie the game. That took the game to overtime. Nicholas Hagman blasted a slapshot for the game winner in 3 minutes and 26 seconds left of overtime. Great game overall.
