TORO Y MOI IN CONCERT:
Chillwave producer extraordinaire Toro y Moi, aka Chazwick Bradley Bundick, transforms every venue he plays into a funky wonderland with his slick, dance-worthy productions. Whether he’s playing guitar or keyboards, Bundick's swirling effects and highly rhytmic productions envelope audiences in an immersive, undeniable groove. His gliding falsetto provides a boyish innocence to his earnestly crafted songs, and even though his lyrics cover personal topics like heartbreak and remorse, he keeps the vibe upbeat by anchoring each song in pumping beats and groove-heavy flourishes. Toro y Moi. On tour in support of his 2015 album What For?, Toro y Moi will bring his laid-back, dance-friendly brand of atmospheric electro-funk to fans across the country.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Chazwick Bradley Bundick was born in 1986 in Columbia, SC, where he formed the indie rock band The Heist and The Accomplice while in high school. After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 2009, he quickly signed to Carpark Records and released Toro y Moi’s 2010 debut album Causers of This. The immaculately produced record earned rave reviews and generated enough buzz to land him opening spots for in-demand artists like Caribou and Phoenix. The following year he released his sophomore album Underneath the Pine, a stellar release that showcased his commitment to live instrumentation. On his third album, 2013’s Anything in Return, Toro y Moi combined the sample-heavy approach of his first record with the live feel of his second effort, and the new direction paid off. The album represented a major breakthrough for him, earning massive praise and leading his first headlining tour and an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Toro y Moi's 2015 album What For? and accompanying tour dates have fans excited to catch Bundick's funky rhythms and masterful sonic textures in concert.
It was very exciting! I would see both acts in concert again!
This show has to be one of the best I've been to! The crowd was awesome the vibe was amazing and the band OH MY the band was AMAZING! Would totally go see Toro Y Moi again I just simply love them!
I had a great trip with my fiance and three friends to Detroit. Before the concert we walked through the Heidelberg Project and admired the public outdoor art that lives among the rooted neighborhood. We made it to the Magic Stick in time to wait in line at the door for a half hour. It didn't help that the street the venue is on was completely tore up and inaccessible, but nonetheless. It was a vintagesque bowling alley/diner that looked like major Detroit hipster hangout. We bolted to the merch table to explore our options. They had some good stuuf, I got two cds, S got a vinyl and Z and J got shirts. His opener Vinyl Williams was acceptable, but everyone seemed impatient to see Toro Y Moi. Near the end of the intermission S and I saw Mr. Chaz walk up to the merch table and chat for a brief moment. His smile is like butterfly kisses from a kitten. We were basically breathless and then Z and J came back and said they saw him too! It was great that we were split up and all still managed to snap a glimpse of him. But yes, the performance was amazing and uplifting. The crowd wasn't most favorable as some people couldn't control their broseph frat/clubrat drinking habits, but we didn't let any of that ruin the wonderful time Toro Y Moi presented for us. Will definitely be seeing them again.
So Many Details. The entire set was effortless.Godspeed.
Toro Y Moi is truly amazing and created an overall phenomenal experience reminiscent of being at church.
Great show! He's a young musical genius! Glad I was able to go.
Toro Y Moi was phenomenal! Though a great deal of the songs played were (as expected), from Toro Y Moi's most recent album "What For?", Chaz and Co. interspersed some crowd favorites in there as well (most notably "Still Sound" and "New Beat"). A few of the earlier songs in the set were a bit meandering, and lacking the vitality of his most popular works, but the arrangements translated phenomenally in the live setting. The band was tight and cohesive, and though frontman Chaz Bundick wasn't the most animated of performers - not that he needed to be - the music sounded incredible. Towards the middle of the show, the funk was on full display and the crowd was electric! It was essentially a huge dance party. Toro Y Moi ended the show on a bit of a sour note, with the lethargic "Yeah Right". However, after a call for an encore, the band brought the house down with a rousing finale including "So Many Details" and an extended, extra-funky iteration of "Say That"!
Toro y Moi killed it! The show was simply amazing. So glad I went. I'll be sure to go again next time Chaz is in Atlanta. I had the time of my life!
This was my first real concert. I went alone but the crowd was wonderful, friendly and full of energy. I got there early so that I could be closer to the stage. No one could stand still once the music started, everyone was dancing. Once Chaz was done with the last song, some ppl started to leave. The rest of us screamed and chanted until he came back out and performed 2 more songs. I know a few ppl had a chance to meet him and the band. I was super jealous, but I think they waited for like an hour in the back. I had a lot of fun and I will make sure to see him every time he comes to GA.
Amazing show! And they encored with two of my favorite songs from them!
I had sooooooo much fun ! Great line up and the encore was dope !
Amazing show. Chaz was so nice and music was great. Played all the best songs. Thanks again
Very enjoyable show in a great venue. Rose Quartz and So Many Details are songs that sound much better live.
The show was amazing!! I hate terminal 5, but for this show it was so chill, no pushing (well I didn't get pushed the whole night).
No other words but a great and groovy dance party! 4 years later I finally see Toro and was not disappointed :)
Unforgettable, Chaz I love you. You're the quintessence of cool
Seeing Toro y Moi at Terminal 5 again was incredible. Chaz really knows how to put on a good show. Aside from the new album being amazing, he's able to really recreate the sound in live performances while also adding his own treat to each crowd. I couldn't help but over cheer and clap while requesting certain tracks, but after hearing the best of and being blown away by their sound I was more than satisfied. I really cannot wait to see them again
Given the style of music and the venue, had they invested in a lighting package, this place would have been jumping. Normally I wouldn't care less about lights, but Terminal 5 was ready to rock, the music was on beat and we were starring at shadows most the time. Bassist was unreal, but was trying to fill a lead that was not present. The overall sound and groove was great, but lack of a real lead guitarist or keyboardist kept the music a little flat and repeatiive. Overall I thought the show was good and the openers were great.
I went with a group of about eight and we all had an amazing experience I'm definitely in love with this venue as well as the artist.
I've found them pretty mellow in the past but holy cow, they rock live. Loud, tight, very high energy. The visuals were a bit average and the band doesn't seem to relate to the crowd all that well. The music is awesome though.
