    Fabulous!!!

by Quincyjones on 1/22/13Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

"Too Hot to Handel: The Jazz-Gospel Messiah" is amazing! Exuberant, gorgeous, inspiring, and uplifting. A fitting tribute to the life and message of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Too Hot to Handel: superlatives are inadequate

    by Pianoman747 on 1/22/13Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Everything you read about this show is understatement. We have never seen or heard such a cavalcade of talent... From the arrangers of this score, world class soloist vocals (the three of them have both world-class operatic voices and gospel-jazz stylism), AMAZING small jazz combo (with the greates unknown jazz pianist in Alvin Waddels you will EVER hear), on top of a Duke Ellington style and quality big band, ON TOP OF a full string orchestra, and a huge, enthusiastic, and talented gospel-classical choir... OMG! Is that enough to make you go next year and hear this exciting, beautiful, thrilling show??

    Excellent show

    by JanuaryGirl26 on 1/22/13Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

It was a wonderful, energetic performance that I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys live music. The solo performances were my favorite because they highlighted the amazing talent that came together to create the show. The pianist, "twinkle toes" set the tone for each act and he really knew how to work the crowd. Everyone on stage seemed to be a master of their craft. I left the show uplifted and ready to take on the year!

I attended the performance with my sisters and sister-in-law; our first time ever. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and definitely plan to attend again next year. Simply marvelous!

The performance was awesome. The enthusiasm of the choir and performers was contagious throughout the auditorium. Have missed several previous performances, but plan to be present again next year!

    Amazing and Uplifting

    by Lee1942 on 1/21/13Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

This annual event has become a "can't miss" in my calendar. The enthusiasm that emanates from the stage and spreads to every single person in the audience is a spiritual experience.

    Distracting video screens

by DaveNeta on 1/21/13Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

I can't believe how distracting the video screens. There was no need for three screens displaying the same thing. They were too bright and gaudy. And the quality and over-saturated color was the worst I've seen publicly displayed in 20 years. Otherwise, GREAT program, GREAT musicians. Loved it!

Great fun, if slightly (only slightly!) flawed

by VGautreau on 1/21/13Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Brilliant fusion of classical/jazz/gospel music, riffing on Handel's famous "Messiah", with fine work by both soloists and chorus. I love concerts where you can tell the performers are having as much fun as the audience. The only negatives were that the orchestra, particularly in the first half, was far too loud, and occasionally overpowered the singers. Also, this year a "video enhancement" was added that was, rather, a distraction. The images were at times so bright that I had to cover my eyes, and the quality of the images was very bad. Get rid of that, and I'd give this five stars.

    Too Hot to Handel

by Phylg on 1/21/13Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

This was my first experience with this performance. Mr. Dixon saves this production. If not for him I would have probably left during the first intermission. This production would probably fair much better if the female soloists were stronger. I could actually recommend a local talent that would probably assist this production in selling more tickets.

    folk are excited and hot!

by Altheatoohot on 1/21/13Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

I generally hold a block of seats for Too Hot to Handle Jazz Gospel Messiah. This year I also took advantage of cyber Monday and purchased outside of the block. Every single person that attended the performance was thrilled, excited, loved it, and OMG so happy they attended. Kudos to the Auditorium theatre for 8 years of an awesome production!!! Awaiting date for next years performance!!

    Astonishing

by ssseditor on 1/21/13Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Handel the composer might not recognize much of Too Hot to Handel, but might love it. Little of his music from the Messiah is recognizable, but that's not all bad! The three gospel singer soloists were wonderful; the choir amazing, and the jazz orchestra and string section were also hot. Not to mention the pianist who was extraordinary.

    by sdiamond3208 on 1/21/13Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Foot tapping, hand clapping fun! This was our first time seeing Too Hot to Handel and we both loved it. It's an amazing, original approach to a classic that combines everything wonderful about music. Do not miss it.

    Best musical performance ever

by Anonymous on 8/30/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

If you like classical, jazz, or gospel music, you will enjoy this performance. I liked it so much that I purchased the sound track weeks later online. This is real music performed at it's best. The performance was worth every penny.

    Too Hot To Handel

by Charri on 12/6/11Detroit Opera House - Detroit

This was by far one of the best Christmas concerts I have ever experienced!!!! It was so moving yet classical; jazzy yet bluesy, just the best time I have had at a concert in a very long time. I would recommend anyone in the Metro Detroit area that has a chance to catch this phenomenal concert when it comes next year to come to downtown Detroit and take it all in because it was truly worth my time. Hallelujah!!!! We will be there next year to remember what the true meaning of Christmas is.
