Too Hot To Handel is an ingeniously re-imagined classical piece that invigorates the audience while paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Too Hot To Handel is a celebration that is “too hot to miss”, this jazz-gospel version of Handel’s classic ”Messiah” is the perfect musical celebration, combining inspired musical styles such as jazz and gospel with blues and soul.
We have been to Too Hot for 5 years and enjoy it every time - wonderful audience, wonderful performances and an atmosphere of conviviality and enthusiasm that makes it all worth the drive down every year. The Auditorium is really spectacular - nothing much like it in this country - Would be wonderful to have a CD or DVD of the performance to listen too in between our annual pilgramage.
I've seen Too Hot 2 Handel for the last four years. Always heaven sent. Planning to spread the Word for 2015!!!
A refreshing performance based on the much-loved music of Handel but presented with the best of classical and jazz mix.

Too Hot To Handel was a wonderful musical experience.The concert offered a plethora of great talent both vocal and instrumental . I have attended the concert for three years and each time I'm amazed at the versitality used in arranging the music, it always different, and so refreshing. Mr Rodrick Dixon is just phenomenal, he has a voice that is exquisite, I could listen to him sing all day long.
One hundred singers came together Friday, Saturday and Sunday night from all over the Chicago region: city dwellers, suburbanites, salad-day students, retirees, working professionals, artists, teachers, black, white,brown, Asian. etc.. to join with 20 brothers and sisters from the Detroit Rackham Symphony Choir to sing praises in a most American of ways. This is the most amazing celebration the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. whose life was dedicated to integration. We are all slowing floating down to earth after these moving performances.
Don't think twice. Just go! You will not regret it!
This was our second year of attending "Too Hot". We may have to make this an annual thing! It was even better this year!
Fabulous experience will become an annual event! Performers & music were unbelievably good. By the end, young & old were on their feet. Auditorium is a gorgeous theater with well-trained staff. I also liked the student quilts in the lobby. A perfect way to commemorate Dr.King's Day.
It was great!!! The soloists were outstanding and the choir was superb, very energetic and precise. The instrumentalists were AWESOME! My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance and we look forward to attending again next year.
Modern jazz, Black Gospel interpretation of Handel's Messiah. First rate (and impressive) vocalists and musicians in well balanced orchestra performance paired with large choir.
Fourth time we have gone--great songs, wonderful voices and so much fun! (which you might not expect in a spiritual concert)
We purchase our tickets every year as soon as possible. It is a performance that creates joy, excitement and lots of foot tapping. The singers have wonderful voices and they themselves express joy in the moment of what is putting before us, the audience.
Great fun version of the Messiah! The pianist was amazing!! One of the best jazz pianist I've ever heard! Also the tenor was great!
This was the best yet. The soloist were great and the music was the best. The choir performed as though they have been together for years not just months. Beside that the members of the choir are volunteer. This year they added 2 video presentations. One at the beginning highlighting what is done to prepare for such an event. The other video was displayed throughout the presentation. It highlighted each soloist and the choir.
Great performance...music, vocals & instrumental...especially the jazz players...sax, piano, bass...and the tenor. Inspiring & upbeat. Just great fun! Can't wait to see it again next year.
The performance was Amazing, Unforgettable and Electricfying!! This was my second year witnessing the awesome voices of the 3 lead vocals and the choir. I took my mom and daughter for their first time and they loved it. Every instrument was heard, felt and provided support for each song in an amazing array of color.
Such a wonderful show. Rodrick Dixon is a blessing to watch perform.
This amazing performance deserves a week in Chicago, not just two performances. The soloists, and especially the pianist and the tenor, were exceptional. And this version of the Messiah is not to be missed.
