About

Tommy Emmanuel in Concert

Anytime you talk to any of Tommy Emmanuel's fans, whether musicians or civilians, invariably they will speak of not one but two qualities that define his greatness. The first, predictably, is his extraordinary guitar playing. Considered by those in the know to be among this planet's greatest guitarists, his playing is simply miraculous, as it would take three musicians, or more, to do what Tommy does solo. Who else, for example, when playing "Day Tripper," can lay down the rhythm part, dig into the riff and sing the melody all at once on just one acoustic guitar?

Which brings us to the other aspect of his music always mentioned, and without which the first might not be as powerful or as infectiously appealing: the joy. Yes, joy. Because it's one thing to play these multi-dimensional arrangements flawlessly on an acoustic guitar. But to do it with that smile of the ages, that evidence of authentic, unbridled delight, is an irresistible invitation to feel his music as deeply as he does. "The joy, he says, "is there always because I'm chasing it through music. Seeing the surprise in peoples' eyes is worth living and working for... I can't help but play to the people with all my heart, which is overflowing with joy of being in that moment that I've worked all my life for. And here it is!"

Although his expression is instrumental, he comes to the guitar much more like a vocalist, positively singing melodies through the strings. He inhabits the tunes he performs, delivering every nuance and turn of phrase. His own songs are also illuminated always with lyrical melodies that go right to the heart, such as his beautiful ode to his daughter, "Angelina," or his great "story without words," "Lewis & Clark." That they resonate so deeply without words makes sense, as words only go so far. But music, coming from a genuine and joyful source, can go so much farther. Now with The Best of Tommy songs, he brings us a complete collection of his own songs, all rich with ripe melodicism and rendered with joy in real-time.

    Awesome!

by Old Hippy on 3/4/24Moore Theatre - Seattle

My guitar player friends told me that I should never miss a chance to see Tommy Emmanuel live. I hate to admit that they were right (I'm a keyboard player, not a guitar player), but OMG, this was an absolutely awesome show! Unbelievable technical prowess combined with soul and an obvious love of playing the guitar. Never miss a chance to see Tommy live, just please don't tell my guitar playing friends that they were right....

    One Man WIth One Guitar

by StrayHorn on 3/4/24Avalon Theatre - Grand Junction

When I saw that Tommy Emmanuel was coming to the Avalon Theater near me, I immediately purchased the best tickets I could get - 1st row, dead center just out of the orchestra seating. I learned later that I had bought "Meet and Greet"tickets. Now I just couldn't wait. Tommy was everything I had hoped for him to be - engaging, clever, kind and the virtuoso of guitar that I knew him to be from all of the videos I have watched over the years. Simply put - he is the best in the world at what he does. Try explaining to someone how one man with one guitar can entertain you for 2 hours and you wonder where the time went and your exhausted from the indescribable experience. You simply cannot find words so you send them a link to Mombassa or Amazing Grace or Deep River Blues or Caravan with Joscho Stephan - all recent videos, and then they can see for themselves why you were at a loss for words. The night at the Avalon was something I will never forget. It began with the feeling of drinking from a firehose but still being thirsty for more. The ebb and flow of the music moved from fast paced bluegrass flat picking to fat and rhythmic driving blue to melodic fingerstyle renditions of songs we've heard but never before like that, to an unexpectedly moving acapella vocal from Tommy. His song, "Mombassa"is amazing and difficult to describe (although he explained it to us) how a guitar player can outplay many a percussionist but on a guitar using hands, fingers, thumbs, palms and a drummers brush on a microphone, adding sounds and rhythms from the guitar. You can see the wear marks from previous "beatings"his Maton has taken, leaving you wondering how often he has to replace guitars. Before the show, at the meet and greet backstage, Tommy had a sweet moment with a lady Aussie who had come and they sang "Waltzing Matilda"acapella together. He said to her, "Now, you listen for that song. It will be the last one at the end of the night."She was front row center during the performance and when it came time to finish the night, he played as if to her as tears streamed down her face. At the end, he reached down from the stage and took her hand and connected with her in a way that only fellow countrymen could. He then said goodnight to the crowd. He is the definition of a class act and the most talented and entertaining guitar player in the world. If you weren't there, I'm sorry you missed it. It was fantasic!

    Amazing

by Sweet potato on 3/4/24Moore Theatre - Seattle

Let me tell you the whole experience was great . We drove up from Vancouver for this show . Both artists blew our minds . The only complaint was the venue. It was colder inside than outside so it was extremely uncomfortable.

    Tommy Was Amazing

by Red on 3/4/24Moore Theatre - Seattle

Tommy was amazing, sound and lighting were over the top. Seating at the Moore Theater was tight and seats uncomfortable. We paid for parking in advance and the parking garage was a nightmare getting out and we could not pull up our parking ticket on the phone when needed. Only relying on the phone for showing tickets is unsustainable.

    Always Fun & Entertaining

by Dfry on 3/4/24Moore Theatre - Seattle

This was the 4th time seeing Tommy, and as usual, he was so amazing on his guitar. It sounds like several people playing, but it's just him. He also tells stories and fun little anecdotes. The crowd loved him. He always has talented opening acts as well. We had a great evening.

It’s been four years since I’ve seen Tommy Emmanuel play in person. As hard to believe as it is, he’s actually gotten better and no one matches his skills.

    Worth the wait!

by Lorretta on 3/1/24The Egyptian Theatre - Boise

I wasn’t thrilled about the 45 minute opening act, although they were excellent musicians. Then the 30 minute intermission, seemed excessive. But then Tommy Emmanuel came out and all was forgiven. What a talent! It was great!

    Wonderful evening!

by Russell G. on 3/1/24The Egyptian Theatre - Boise

I purchased tickets on a whim for Tommy Emmanuel. Prior to that, I had not even heard of Tommy, but I thought, "what the heck, I like acoustic guitar, let's check it out". Well, we were treated to some really great musicians and a wonderful show. Tommy had invited a few guest musicians to open (Trey and Rob) and they were amazingly gifted and put on a great show in their own right. Following their performance, Tommy dazzled with his acoustic acumen and had a wonderful and entertaining stage presence as well. He didn't just play his music, he told the story behind it, or shared little tidbits about it that added to the overall enjoyment. To close out the show, Tommy brought Trey and Rob back out on stage to play a few numbers, and they were all magnificent. What a wonderful experience! Try it, you won't be disappointed!
