Todd Rundgren on Tour

Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.

No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.

Todd Rundgren in Concert

Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

    A trip back in time

by bzipp on 9/14/09Park West - Chicago

The wizard is a true star. Performing the most innovative album of its time thirty six years later was enough show for any fan. But reuniting with Roger and Kazim for an opening set of Utopia was beyond belief. Drawing upon capable instrumentalists for a flashback of the entire Wizard album added up to a brilliant evening for the enthusiastic crowd. As our increasingly fast food society relentlessly chases the new and different pop tarts that are here today and gone tomorrow, my appreciation for this gifted visionary is shining still.

Rundgren strikes gold with new trend

by Golferandy on 9/14/09Park West - Chicago

The latest trend is for musical artists to perform classic albums in their entirety. Todd Rundgren takes this tirned to a new level in his "A Wizard, A True Star" show. Always the trend-setter and rarely the follower, Rundgren gave us our money's worth by doing a surprise 45-minute set of Utopia songs with Roger Powell coming out of the woodwork to join Kasim Sultan, Prairie Prince and Todd. Then the featured album was performed in spectacular fashion as Todd was backed by a stellar 6-piece band, all decked out in white tuxedos. The numerous costume changes made by the star were a bit campy, but did not slow the proceedings and just made the whole night that much more fun. Great show! Hope it makes a long run - and then is followed by a concert featuring "Something/Anything".

Todd Proves He IS a Wizard and a True Star

    by Buck50 on 9/14/09Park West - Chicago

Todd is a fantastic showman, composer, artist, and musician. I appreciated that he allowed so many of his favorite musicians play the album, while Todd showcased his interpretation of each song. I went wild over each of the many costumes changes, my favorite was the FAT SUIT. To hear the entire AWATS album live was a special treat for a long time fan. Thank you Todd for giving us the music from your heart.

    Todd Rundgren

by Jansie on 9/13/09Park West - Chicago

Todd is one of the most eclectic musicians with unlimited talent and knows how to surround himself with other musicians that rise to his standard. A Wizard A True Star is a once in a lifetime show and I was happy I had the chance to partake in the experience. Would HIGHLY recommend if you are a big Todd Rundgren fan.

    TODD keeps bringing it

by debreda on 9/13/09Park West - Chicago

The show was outstanding, the band tight, the costumes quite perfect. Not to ruin it for those still looking forward to it, no specifics but I had no idea Todd was as theatrical as he seemed to be last nice and I laughed out loud. He was in fine form and the band was as well greased. The sax player even came to the front of the stage to dance. It was Todd x 10 for this huge Todd fan. I'd say it was outrageously fun! Waiting in the hallway to leave after the show, I said to many people "wasn't that a GREAT GREAT SHOW" and everyone agreed whole heartedly.

Todd Delivers -- your money was well spent!

by JZLZ on 9/13/09Park West - Chicago

Seeing Utopia again was a dream come true. A Wizard, a True Star showed Todd at his showman best! I think that everyone who was there had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Loved the costumes -- showed his playful self. Great to see Michelle on stage with them in the end.

todd rundgren, a wizard, a true star!

by CriticalCondition on 9/13/09Park West - Chicago

before this show, todd rundgren had the distinction of being the best concert i ever saw (acapella tour) and the worst show (no world order). this show opened with utopia, which was a surprise and a disappointment. the music was great including wonderful treats from the road to utopia album, but it was way too loud and too muddled to hear through the entire set. Then there was a near 45 minute wait for the main show to start. jeepers. where was this night going? but then, the real show started and it was by far the best performance i have seen to date. listening to the album again before the show, i wondered how he could pull it off. watching the show, i was in a constant state of surprise and amusement. his bands and his own devotion to the material and the work of putting on this show was amazing. i dont know - 12 different costume changes? wonderful musicianship. nice light show. great energy. Cool Jerk! Everybody! And Just One Victory for everyone.

Todd Always Great/ Park West Sucks

by JustAnotherRundgrenhead on 9/13/09Park West - Chicago

Todd Rundgren continues to amaze into his 60's! The "warm up" group on this night was.... UTOPIA!! Todd, Roger Powell, Kasim Sultan (with Prairie Prince on drums instead of Willie Wilcox). They played a 45 min. set of songs from all phases of Utopia featuring The Ikon, Trapped, Abandon City, Road to Utopia, Caravan, Hammer in My Heart, and Libertine. It was refreshing seeing "Utopia" back together again. Then the main event: A Wizard A True Star featured the Utopia band plus Jesse Gress, Greg Hawkes, and Bobby Strickland. Almost every song, Todd was center stage with a different costume/outfit. The band played well. 70's lights filled the theatre. A neat, neat experience. My only negative is the Park West. This would have been a Five ***** show if not for the venue. These tickets weren't cheap but, even arriving one hour early we were relegated to balcony way off to one side, sitting on what-became-uncomfortable bar stools, and the sound was kind of muddy. Vocals not distinct and Todd's guitar sound not sharp. This was a little disappointing. I blame it on the Park West with their multitude of so-called "reserved" seats . I guess $82 a ticket wasn't enough, they wanted $250 for cramped little tables which took up the majority of the room. Not to mention the $100+ seats in the front of the theatre. Throw in the fact that parking around the Park West is street only so get there REEEAL early. A great performance by the Toddsters/ a horsecrap venue. I won't go back to the Park West again.

"Bizarre wanna be broadway rock show"

by TNTgirl on 9/13/09Park West - Chicago

The first band was Utopia playing some old favorites and rocking it. They were great meeting the expectations of the audience. But then after a 45 minute break the Todd Rundgren band came out. Then it got very bizarre. The band was dressed in white tuxedos and Todd "came out" in over 25 costume changes. He sang some ballads but missed the boat by not singing "Hello it's me". The ticket payers came to hear this song which he omitted. Left us dissapointed and confused.

    Together Again!

by SalukiMike on 9/13/09Park West - Chicago

Had a great time at the show last night. Venue was perfect. Shook hands with Kasim Sultan who was walking about. The Utopia opening was unbelievable! Great to see them together again (except for Willie). Fantastic. AWATS was really good. Great recreation, and excellent musicianship. One thing I could do without was the goofy costumes Todd was wearing. I thought the costumes took something away from the meaning of the songs. But I'm sure it was just Todd being goofy and trying to introduce some lefity. My adivce is to forget the custumes, and let the music stand on its own - its awesome!

    Possibly best ever

by kazfan on 9/13/09Park West - Chicago

I've been going to Todd shows for 25 years and this may have been the best. Todd was in great voice. The highlight for me was the return of Roger Powell. Todd, Kaz, Roger and Prarie opening with 45 minutes of Utopia tunes was an unexpected higlight for me. Does Kaz ever age?

Must see,,,filled with surprizes,,,and,, Todd is..

by Radz on 9/13/09Park West - Chicago

Great show! Having Kasim show up was no surprize (allways very welcome), but Roger Powell was a great surprize! All of Utopia except for Willie.....and then they crank out 5 or 6 great Utopia tunes! Then comes a Wizard........Todd was in great form and the costume changes were a great addition and some of them were funny as heck! He did a good job poking fun at himself while at the same time not diminishing the music and putting on another great performance.

    Todd is God

by Hatter on 9/13/09Park West - Chicago

I have seen several Todd concerts over the years, however this was one of my favorites. I loved how the "warm up" band was Utopia minus Willy. Pairie is great as a fill in. They came out and just jammed with only white lights shining on them. They played some of my all time favorite Utopia songs. (Trapped, Cavavan, On the road to Utopia, Last of the new wave riders) Seeing and hearing Roger Powell was a treat. And Kasim was great as usual. Then Todd and band played Wizard/True Star album with Todd changing outfits on every song. It was a blast!

Not surprisingly, this latest show was amazing! Start to finish it was consistant! And Park West is a perfect venue. The band was every bit amazing as well.

    AWATS Akron

by woodstuff on 9/13/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

I'm not a huge fan of Todd's music but I usually go to the shows to meet with my friends. However, this show was amazing and I wish I could see many more.
