Todd Rundgren on Tour

Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.

No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.

Todd Rundgren in Concert

Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

Todd has still got it. His voice is amazing, the overall show fantastic, but some of the costumes were a bit nutty.

I'm not a huge fan of Todd's music but I usually go to the shows to meet with my friends. However, this show was amazing and I wish I could see many more.

Todd Rundgren was amazing and bizarre!

by toddmaniac on 9/10/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

The concert starting with a "warm-up" band consisting of some band members and Todd. Interesting... after a break the entire band came out with white tuxes and tails. Todd had many bizarre costume changes! He sounded great and he had an awesome band especially the sax player. The crowd was totally into the concert. I'd definitely go again!!!

    Todd Still Has IT!

by Hillarysre on 9/9/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

Magic was in the air as soon as we entered the Akron Civic Theater. What a perfect place to see a show, especially Todd Rundgren! To be entertained by him as an opening act was unbelievable! But when the curtain went up for the beginning of A Wizard A True Star and Todd was in an astronaut costume as well as his band in white tails, blew me away! The rest of the concert was perfect and his many costume changes were magnificent! His band was amazing also! I will never forget this incredible event. Thank you Todd, Michelle and the band!

Todd concert was packed with surprises

by Karensmom on 9/9/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

Todd cleverly used Utopia, featuring Roger Powell and Kasim Sulton, as the opening act. It was fun to hear music from Oops Wrong Planet and Out Standing in Their Field. Utopia transitioned into the main act with the addition of 3 more musicians. The guys were great with the instrumentals and back up vocals for Wizard. Todd had fun with costume changes and theatrics. His voice was great, and he showed how he loves to wail on the lead guitar. Akron Civic Theater was the perfect venue for A Wizard, A True Star.

Todd and his band still got it - Music was great!

by FoddTan on 9/9/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

For the Sunday, September 6 show the music was all that I hoped it would be. Todd's voice and range of vocals were superb along with the others who did vocals. Parts of the staging were rough. Some costumes worked - space suit, I really liked the white tails on the musicians and the orange tux for the Motwown songs. Parts with the fat suit were good like during Just Another Onion Head and Sometimes I Don't Know What. The bird, was that a bird suit? needs work. Overall I enjoyed the show. Really glad I went.

    Todd Rundgren rocks out!

by labgeek on 9/8/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

Todd's concert on 09/06/2009 was awesome! The show was definitely worth the price of admission. Todd Rundgren has gone through many phases as a musician and writer. He has had his mainstream successes; Every Todd fan knows "Hello it's me" or "Bang the Drum All Day". However, his 1970's progressive rock era was one of his most creative. The main event was the reincarnation of "A Wizard a True Star". He played the album in it's entirety! The band did an excellent job. The album is surrealistic music at it's best! The rapid transition from one song to another was very well done. The notes were right on the money. Todd opened the show with a selection of songs from "Oops Wrong Planet"; a mid/late 70's album by Todd's band Utopia. The band also played some bits and pieces from the very first Utopia album, What a treat! All of the songs were performed well. The players and audience seemed to be really enjoying themselves. The show did have some technical difficulties. Roger Powell, the primary keyboardist, had some problems with his headset during the Utopia sequence. Todd also had some headset problems during the rendition of "The Zen Archer" and "Flamingos". The first show of a world tour always some technical difficulties. Kasim Sultan, the bassist, did a marvelous job. He was one of the highlights of the show. It was a pleasure and an honor to be among the first people in the world; to witness this show! The show was great!!!

The shows opening act "Utopia" was a dream come true and a stellar way to begin a truly memorable event. It was love at first sight. The AWATS band was was a wonderful mix of the old and new, with the best of the best Todd Rundgren band members, forming a wonderful backdrop to the theatrical antics and heavenly voice of Todd. Don't miss this show!

A blast from the past from Rundgren

by mreese on 9/8/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

Todd Rundgren a Wizard and true Star. "Yes, he is !!! First, it was great to see that the opening act was Utopia, with Mr.Prince now on the drums. ( A new Utopia - maybe a new Utopia album). They sounded great . The 2nd set was great too, except for the technical problems. You could tell by Todd's expressions he was getting a little frustrated with his road crew, especially at the end, when the roadie didn't bring him out his quitar, and Michelle Rundgren had to go find him. I love the show, and had a funny feeling Todd was going to do something different as always. Hopefully they work out all the bugs and come back to Ohio in the Cleveland / Akron area again.

    Does it get any better?

by Utopian on 9/8/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

Monday nights show was not without it's flaws. However, the flaws were mechanical in nature and will happen to anyone.Other than those, this was by far the absolute best Todd concert i have ever seen.lastnights performance was number 24 for me,,so I do have a few to compare to. The shows opening with Utopians Roger Powell & Kasim playing Utopia songs as a warm-up to the "big event" was a treat to any fan.Anyone in attendence could easily see the enjoyment on Todds face as they cranked out tune after tune.I would say there was a full 45mins.of some of Utopias best "concert" songs....a real treat. Then a brief intermission while the prepared the stage and let the "Runt" rest his vocals.Upon returning to the stage for AWATS,the excitement was beyond belief.Every song played to perfection. It was a pinch me moment that lasted for nearly 90 more mins. I will be first inline to purchase a copy of this DVD once released. If you are a "somewhat" Todd fan>>>see this show>>>you will be hooked!!!!

What a performer - will do it again and again if I get the chance. You are going to see a concert for the first half of the show and a PERFORMANCE the last half. Don't go if you have expectations to see his HITS.

Fun, a Little Rough Around the Edges!

by Tip1960 on 9/8/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

I have seen Todd and/or Utopia many, many times. The fact that they were performing A Wizard, A True Star from start to finish was the hook for me. The first set was various hits by Utopia...sort of. Willie Wilcox was missing (where are you Willie?!), and was replaced by Prairie Prince. Prince obviously was not as comfortable with the tunes as the other guys...several clunky entrances and missed cues. Roger Powell was also off his game a bit from the old days, missing a few entrances vocally. Overall, though...they guys sounded great, and played a good range of Utopia songs. Second set was AWATS. Loved the concept: the band was tiered on two sides of the stage, and Todd would appear through a framed doorway, wearing different costumes pertaining to the individual songs he sang. The band did a good job staying true to the original album, and even enhanced the arrangements a bit to the better. Todd's vocals were not always audible (hello, sound techs?), and at times he and/or an instrumental soloist were in the dark (hello, lighting techs?). Again, there were a few missteps, but with AWATS being such an iconic album, it would be hard to replicate it exactly live. Todd seemed amused, and not irritated ("We're a bit new to this...can you tell?"). I suppose they will eventually iron out all the bugs on this tour...

Todd Rundgren: A Wizard A True Star

by BillBuckholtz on 9/8/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

This show was spectacular! More artists should consider playing one entire album of their music; although not many artists have a thematic yet diversely entertaining album such as "Wizard". There a few tech gliches-unknown to most (I am a seasoned performer so I knew) and one ... ONE missed note by the masterful guitarist... but his instant acknowledgment with a warm and human smile made the note worth its weight in gold. The tech gliches Rundgren blew off by uttering, "This is the show we expected last night" told the few of us in the audience that picked up on it that opening night - Sunday probably went flawlessly while added show - Monday had a few wireless mic troubles. His voice held out and his use of vocalists two and three worked well to add to his endurance. This show will do well world-wide. In markets where this album is even more iconic, a slight or large infusion of cash by backers to enhance the video graphics, costunmes and set design would shoot this Star into world-class production ala Cirque. Most of the first 10-20 rows stood with tears streaming down their cheeks... by all accounts, it was an emotional success!

Todd Rundgren is a true wizard and star

by Loverly on 9/8/09Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

Todd Rundgren is an incredible musical talent and genious of his chosen craft and a master in musical fantasy along with the help of his superior band. I especially enjoyed the lights and all of Todd's costume changes during his performance the Civic Theater was a great place for this concert it added to the mystic of his performance almost made you feel as if it was magical.
