About

Georgia troubadour Tinsley Ellis has been immersed in music his whole life. Born in Atlanta 1957 and raised in southern Florida, he acquired his first guitar at age seven, inspired by seeing The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like many kids his age, Ellis discovered the blues through the back door of British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds, Cream and The Rolling Stones as well as Southern rockers like the Allman Brothers Band. 20 albums (and millions of miles traveled) later on record labels such as Alligator and Capricorn, Ellis has become an elder statesman of the blues world.

With his new project Tinsley Ellis - Acoustic Songs And Stories, Ellis performs many of his most popular songs (plus delta blues and classics by artists like Gregg Allman, Bob Dylan and Leo Kottke) on his 1937 National Steel and 1969 Martin D-35. Ellis weaves the music together with interesting and sometimes ribald stories from over 40 years of a life spent on stages and in motels and truck stops. Ellis shows no signs of slowing down and is headed your way with his newest and perhaps most unique project.

  • TINSLEY ELLIS

    by Ricky1962 on 2/21/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

We were disappointed in Tinsley's performance. The opening act, Bill Sheffield was good and entertaining. I've seen Tinsley 3 times and familiar with his music. This particular concert was not equal to his previous performance. The sound was too loud, it seems like he tried to make up for the performance with volume. Our ears were actually hurting and we sat in the very back row. He featured his new album in the first half of the show. We didn't care for the new album. it seemed like he changed direction in his music and gone away from the blues roots that he's known for. We left about half way through the show. This will probably my last time seeing Tinsley.

  • Tinsley!

Awesome, as always! Hadn't seen Tinsley in about 16 years, since the Shannon's days in Rome, GA. He has lost nothing in that time, simply aging beautifully, like the fine wine that he is. I was only wondering, who were all those old people drinking the Geritol shots, and rockin' the walkers? Surely they are not checking the same age demographic box as me!

  • Great Show

by LilT on 10/24/09Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Tinsley Ellis put on a great show!! We prefer his earlier work where he sticks to true blues, which he played in the 2nd half of his show. His more recent album, Speak No Evil, sounds good but is a little harder than we expected and prefer. Still sounded awesome though! I would go see him again.

  • Tinsley Ellis was good but TOO LOUD!

by RonR on 10/24/09Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

The music was good but entirely too loud for the venue. I, and others went to the lobby to help ease the pressure on our ears.

  • Good Wine & Great Blues!

by Eclectica on 10/24/09Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Easy reasonable parking ($7), great job opening by The Soul Shakers -- they hold their own. Tinsley does it right; and keeps getting better -- the new CD is amazing. Better than average selection of wine at the venue, thankyouverymuch! Enjoyed the staff operating the Playhouse -- a great group of people. One complaint: I must be getting old, but cranking it up 30-40 decibels after the first curtain call is a dirty trick. When you're done, I'll go home. Nuff said.
