About

THUNDERCAT IN CONCERT:

Genre-spanning bassist, singer, and producer Thundercat is known for keeping audiences on their toes with his head-spinning variety and eclecticism. From skittering fusion and squelching funk to synth-laden electro, one thing remains constant in his music -- his virtuosic bass playing. He's a true master of the instrument and it provides the backbone for his diverse sound, tying songs like "Oh Sheit It's X" and "Walkin'" together despite their markedly different vibes. In 2014 Thundercat provided tour support to his longtime collaborator Flying Lotus, and his stellar performances and futuristic stage wear on the road proved he's as impressive in concert as he is in the studio.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Los Angeles-born multi-talent Thundercat, a.k.a Stephen Bruner, fell in love with bass at an early age. In his teens he became the bassist of iconic LA thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, whose lineup also included his brother Ronald Jr. on drums. By the mid-'00s he was a sought-after session player, appearing on acclaimed albums by Erykah Badu and his Brainfeeder label mate Flying Lotus. Bruner made his solo debut as Thundercat in 2011 with the album The Golden Age of Apocalypse, a kaleidoscopic slice of bass-heavy fusion and electro that was a huge critical success. Following buzzworthy appearances at festivals like Coachella and Austin City Limits, he released his 2013 sophomore album Apocalypse to another round of critical praise.  A seasoned performer known for his mean bass playing and outré stagewear, Thundercat continues to get ticket buyers moving and shaking on his must-see tours.

    Terrible sound

    by J. E. on 8/7/22Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I was very disappointed with the concert. I really was looking forward to hear the band and especially his bass playing. But it was impossible to hear anything other than a constant low end feedback. The kick and the bass blended and I couldn’t hear what they were playing. We actually left early because we were so disappointed. Another issue, we were told to put the ticket in the Apple wallet. But when we arrived they couldn’t read it. It had to be a barcode. Luckily I had your app.

    Making History

by Paul on 12/14/21History - Toronto

New event space History was very nice. This was the third venue after cancellations in March 2020 and a few postponement. Very well run from check in to finish. A very nice and thoughtful gesture was the security staff handing out water to crowd on the front of the stage. I thought that was noteworthy 👏

    10/10, Absolutely incredible

by Styley on 12/14/21History - Toronto

With such incredibly talented musicians on stage, it can be difficult to go wrong. Thundercat pushed the limits and gave the crowd an authentic and honest experience, from mind blowing jams to heart to heart conversations, you can’t fin d an experience like this anywhere else. A 2.5hr set is well more than your money’s worth. If you ever have the opportunity to see thundercat, do it. I’ll be seeing him again next year.

    Way too loud to enjoy

by Dre on 12/8/21Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I literally couldn't hear the music or the vocals because everything got drowned out since somebody turned all the equalizer knobs to 11. You'd think a venue like the Paramount would have been engineered to have good acoustics but even up on the 2nd mezzanine I couldn't enjoy the show for the simple fact that everything just sounded like noise. I've been to loud concerts before where I left with my ears ringing, but still had a good time because I could actually hear what the artist/band was performing. However, this show lacked any of that enjoyment. My ears weren't even ringing when I left, so it wasn't a loudness issue per-se. The equalizer was just so far out of balance that none of the instruments or vocals could be distinguished. I've seen childish Gambino at the Paramount, so I know the fault isn't with the venue, but moreso with whoever was controlling the audio on the particular night Thundercat was performing. I'm not sure I'd risk buying tickets to see another concert here, and maybe I'll just stick to seeing plays at the Paramount from here on out. The silver lining is that once I realized I would not enjoy the show by listening to the music, i became entranced by watching the drummer working some magic on his drum set.

    Great Jams, Rough Entry

by marissugh on 12/8/21Knitting Factory Concert House - Boise - Boise

Thundercat was great! Production was beautiful. Service was awesome. Just wish that they had a second employee handling VIP entry to the venue because it was understaffed and I missed half of the opening artist. Like, why have 4 employees for GA tickets but leave 1 employee for all of the upstairs attendants? Still, very small bump in the road of a great night. :-)

    Poor mixing. Overall too loud.

by Will on 12/8/21Paramount Theatre - Seattle

It was very hard to hear the bass and keyboard over the drums. Overall it was a bit too loud and blown out, as well. Pretty disappointed.

    Emperor's New Clothes

by Rich on 12/8/21Knitting Factory Concert House - Boise - Boise

A drummer, a keyboard and a bass falling down the stairs. Three different stairways. An odd cacophony of chromatic runs and dissonance. A few groovy slow jams thrown in to cleanse the palate then right back to playing every note they've ever learned all at once. Room audio was tough to hear any articulated words or clear melodies. The audio engineers must have had the good seats. Scathing pretentious review aside, it was a fun time. No need to go back for me, not my jam. Can't quite tell if the hype is genuine or if Thundercat was more of a subculture lighting rod and everyone just wants to say they like it, to be one of the cool kids.

    Paramount needs a sound upgrade

by Drew on 12/7/21Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I've become totally disenchanted with the sound at the Paramount. I think the issue is a combo of the reverb in the room, the PA, and engineers that don't know how to mix for it. I have seen shows there that had quality sound, but they have been over 10 years ago and for much larger acts. In this case I was in the mezzanine, previously it was on the floor, in both cases there was too much room interference with the sound and lower frequencies, bellow 100hz, get muddied up quite a bit. This is especially problematic for Thundercat considering the premier instrument is a bass... and with a lower register at that. The PA couldn't keep up between the bass and the kick drum, and considering the drummer was on that kick really quick the whole time the result was just mud. I wasn't the only person around where I was sitting that walked out early.

Sadly one of the worst live shows I've been to :/

by Dez on 12/7/21Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I was genuinely disappointed by Thundercat's live performance, and as a fan that paid money for the show it's such a bummer. I'm not sure if it was just a sound issue, or if he just isn't as good live as he is in recordings (it happens!) but the drums were way louder than his mic. Worst of all though, were the 30 minute jam sessions between each song that just didn't sound good. I would like to specify that Channel Tres was amazing though.

Don't know if music was good because sound was poorly mixed

    by DKS on 12/7/21

Thundercat is one of my favorite musicians. I absolutely love his music and bow down to his virtuosity. I can't imagine that he and his collaborators provided anything less than a stellar performance. Unfortunately, I don't know that with certainty because the sound was so horrible. It just sounded like a cacophony of noise. I couldn't hear his playing or singing because it was awash in that cacophony. Truly one of the most disappointing shows I have ever attended. I left after about six or seven songs because the mix was so poor and was heartbroken to have to make that decision.

    Absolutely awful

by Mudcat on 12/7/21Paramount Theatre - Seattle

We left about 7 songs in. The sound was so awful it was unbearable. We could barely even make out what song was being played. Whoever the sound guy was should be sent to mixing school. They did a huge disservice to a fantastic band. We weren’t the only ones. There was a steady stream of people leaving. Would give zero stars if I could. A waste of over $1000 and driving over 200 miles. I wish I had instead eaten the tickets!

I WANT TO BE A CAT

by Q on 12/4/21House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

Seeing Thundercat live and in person was the best thing that has happened to me in 2021. I really needed this concert to take my mind off of things and it was just what I needed. I song all the songs word for word and Thundercat was just other wordly. That man knows his way around a Bass guitar. I can't wait to see him again.

    Disappointing

by Nin on 12/2/21Ace of Spades - Sacramento

He pretty much just played obnoxious solos the entire time and hardly any songs. The first hour he was playing we heard ONE song and the rest was solo. Not what we expected at all, ended up leaving early.

    Bad sound too crowded

by VeDa on 11/24/21House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

My issues are with the HOB venue than Thundercat. He was on brand and great. But the instruments were so loud you couldn't hear him singing. This seems to be typical for HOB. And in light of the recent Travis Scott situation, it was alarming how crowded it was on the floor. There was hardly any room around you. This should have been managed better.

    AMAZING SHOW

by Emira on 11/23/21House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

Thundercat and Channel Tres absolutely killed it! The seated balcony area being open for GA really helped me see the full show, seeing as I am 4'11". The performances were lively and fun to watch, the crowd interaction was great, and of course the music was phenomenal!! House of Blues staff was very kind and accommodating. Can't wait for the next show!

Too much / Channel Tres gets 5 stars though

by Funky Cat on 11/23/21House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

I was expecting a more groovy and funky set, but for the entire first hour Thundercat went down a Rabit Hole ripping on the guitar and everyone just stood and stared for a whole hour. It was exhausting. I give 5 stars though to Channel Tres that man was a whole vibe and universe of his own, saved the night for me.
