THUNDERCAT IN CONCERT:
Genre-spanning bassist, singer, and producer Thundercat is known for keeping audiences on their toes with his head-spinning variety and eclecticism. From skittering fusion and squelching funk to synth-laden electro, one thing remains constant in his music -- his virtuosic bass playing. He's a true master of the instrument and it provides the backbone for his diverse sound, tying songs like "Oh Sheit It's X" and "Walkin'" together despite their markedly different vibes. In 2014 Thundercat provided tour support to his longtime collaborator Flying Lotus, and his stellar performances and futuristic stage wear on the road proved he's as impressive in concert as he is in the studio.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Los Angeles-born multi-talent Thundercat, a.k.a Stephen Bruner, fell in love with bass at an early age. In his teens he became the bassist of iconic LA thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, whose lineup also included his brother Ronald Jr. on drums. By the mid-'00s he was a sought-after session player, appearing on acclaimed albums by Erykah Badu and his Brainfeeder label mate Flying Lotus. Bruner made his solo debut as Thundercat in 2011 with the album The Golden Age of Apocalypse, a kaleidoscopic slice of bass-heavy fusion and electro that was a huge critical success. Following buzzworthy appearances at festivals like Coachella and Austin City Limits, he released his 2013 sophomore album Apocalypse to another round of critical praise. A seasoned performer known for his mean bass playing and outré stagewear, Thundercat continues to get ticket buyers moving and shaking on his must-see tours.
Amazing show. Fun, funny, engaging and great sound acoustics at the venue. Can't wait to see him again.
Thundercat & band blew the doors off the place! The opening Dj act was also very good, I loved the vibes they brought. One thing that could have been better was less haze and fog when I entered the venue. I know that it is mostly for special effects and so the audience can see the lighting to it's full potential. But it was hard to breathe. Other than that the overall experience at MGM Fenway Music Hall was really good. Just could go for a little less haze at the beginning. ✌️
My son is a musician and he mentioned Thundercat sometime ago. I knew nothing of him. I thought it would be a great father/son thing. It was better than I hoped. I have seen a lot of artists over the years and granted, I am not a musician, but even I can recognize Thundercat's amazing talent. Plus he has a great voice (even though he apologized that it was off - liar!). I loved the back story on Thundercat's travel to Japan and other life experiences. Things like that bring it all home. Ticketmaster, MGM Fenway, Coco n Breezy, and most of all, Thundercat, thank you for a wonderful night of music, life and yes, love. C n B said it so much, it was kinda too much but in hindsight, can artists ever say it too much? More than that, is it something we should discount? Thundercat put on a great show and I think everyone enjoyed the experience. I cannot imagine there are many bass players like him on the planet and even less that can sing like him. Thank you for a wonderful night
This is my second time seeing him (first time in 2 years) and god does he put on a great show. Tickets are never too expensive and the venues he plays in are always nice and intimate. I love just buying a general admission ticket and dancing on the floor. Amazing artist, amazing energy, amazing shows. Go see this man at any opportunity you get!
he sounded just like he does in his songs!! his guitar playing was remarkable and the setup!! spectacular! a beautiful light show alongside beautiful music.
great chill show music was great and very enjoyable live crowd wasn’t crazy but excited to listen which was cool venue experience was pretty good aswell
It was a great set list follows by a great performance!!
Metal was never so metal as Thundercat (and the amazing accompanying musicians on keyboards and drums). It’s great seeing someone love what they are doing, you know? Also, we laughed a lot
I wish I was his fingers. Thundercat is a wonderful human being and Chicago loves him.
It was okay, really wanted to hear more of his songs but felt like it was all guitar solos
The venue was remarkable but not so the concert 1st time, last time going see him in concert.
Experiencing Thundercat was such a delight. His music is captivating to begin with and getting to go through that in person was amazing. Although I wasn't able to see him unless he was center stage (a giant cat paw blocked our view on the left) it was still a really fun time. If you can get tickets to his show, absolutely go! 10/10 would see again
This was a great show. The venue is incredible. I wish there was more food. The location is fine, but not a lot of dining options. Eat before you go. The show itself was incredible. Thundercat played the perfect mix of hits, deep cuts. Also jammed the tunes a bit which I appreciated being a bass player. The band was ridiculously good. My opinion of a live show is if you want to hear the record. Stay home and listen to it. Can’t wait to see him again.
Laid back and comfortable, we will definitely be back
I think Thundercat’s concert was 75% solo instrumentals on bass - not what we were expecting. Just when you think he’ll actually end a song and do the next, he does a 5 minute solo….and he did this on pretty much every song! Left early and disappointed.
You know it's bad when the club/house music opener is the best part of the show. Thundercat literally just played quick little notes on his bass the entire night. Every song ended up sounding the same. He only sang in probably 4 songs and gave awkward anecdotes between some songs. If you like to listen to his albums, expect to hear none of what you like. Truthfully, I think the only people that actually enjoyed the show were the ones that were on something. I have never seen so many people stand completely still, sit down, talk, or leave a concert before. I should have really listened to the other low-star reviewers. Only plus side was that the merch was cool, but expensive.
Hadn’t listened to this kind of music in the past, but definitely wasn’t the most exciting…
Thundercat and his opener Kitty Ca$h we’re great. Even though Thundercat voice was a hurt from his previous show he still put on a great show and was very interactive with the crowd. My only gripe with the show was the crowd but that was out of the performers hand.
One of the best bassists of this era and he demonstrates it perfectly
The venue was seriously the best and I had a rlly great view despite being in row 23! Also didn't get super hot which is great and it was just overall a magical time I won't forget. I love u Thundercat
