A very fun evening
by rainbowandi on 10/9/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los AngelesI still love "They're Playing Our Song". This production was very fun. Stephanie J. Block makes singing look so easy and her characterization of Sonia was spot on. Jason Alexander was OK, but not enough of a music nerd as Vernon should be. Sometimes he seemed to be going through the motions of Vernon, not being Vernon. My biggest complaint is the changes to the music. The "Leon" song was stupid and didn't add to the script. And to take out "I still believe in love" was a travesty. It summed up the feelings and spirit of Sonia. The replacement song "If you remember me" didn't work. It changed Sonia's focus from the internal strength of going on to the external worry of whether she meant as much to Vernon as he did to her. The set was very clever and the "girls" and "boys" were fun. Overall, it was a very fun evening that brought back great memories.
