They Might Be Giants on Tour

They Might Be Giants have been playing together since 1982 — and writing their playful, witty songs as a duo even longer — so the band's onstage chemistry isn't in question. Hearing the Johns (John Flansburgh and John Linnell) banter between songs is a treat in and of itself, but the real spectacle is witnessing their mind meld as they pull lyrically and musically knotty cuts from their catalog of a few dozen albums, EPs and compilations. Although the Johns started out as a pair backed by drum machine and prerecorded cassette, they've been a band since the '90s and are currently backed by longtime members Dan Miller on guitar, Danny Weinkauf on bass and Marty Beller on drums. They're just as likely to go into a stormy Middle Eastern inspired rock-out during their famous version of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)," as to strip back to acoustic guitar (Flansburgh) and baritone sax (Linnell) for the morbid fan favorite "Older." And with a large oeuvre including kids' songs (they won a Grammy for 2008's Here Come the 123s) and film and TV themes (they won another Grammy for Malcolm in the Middle's "Boss of Me"), TMBG have limitless ways to delight and surprise an audience.

They Might Be Giants in Concert

John Flansburgh and John Linnell met as teens growing up in Lincoln, Massachusetts, and began writing songs together in high school. They parted ways for college, but reunited in Brooklyn in 1981 when (somewhat by design) they moved into the same apartment building on the same day. Thus began an incredibly fruitful and truly creative career in music. As They Might Be Giants gained a local fandom for their atypical instruments and unusual subject matter — their synthy 1986 self-titled debut included songs called "(She Was A) Hotel Detective" and "Youth Culture Killed My Dog" — they also experimented with distribution methods. For years, they used local newspapers to advertise a phone number that would greet callers with new songs and fake ads. That answering machine service, dubbed Dial-A-Song, foreshadowed their pioneering use of the internet. TMBG released the first MP3-only album in 1999, and began podcasting in 2005. They also found early success in film and TV after signing with Elektra in 1989 and seeing their 1990 LP Flood go platinum thanks to their MTV-supported single "Birdhouse in Your Soul." Their cover of the Four Lads' "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" wound up getting animated for Steven Spielberg's Tiny Toon Adventures along with "Particle Man," and they subsequently wrote or performed songs for Malcolm in the Middle, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Dexter's Laboratory and more. TMBG were even Tony-nominated for their work on SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. Beginning in 2002 with the album No!, the Johns found success writing children's music and have interspersed their regular flow of rock-oriented albums with family fare. They Might Be Giants continue to be remarkably prolific, releasing three albums in 2018 alone: I Like Fun, My Murdered Remains and The Escape Team.

    TMBG are amazing entertainers

by Anonymous on 1/29/18Culture Room - Ft Lauderdale

This is my first They Might Be Giants show, and I am amazed by their performance. They played two sets and two encores. The Culture Room is the perfect intimate setting for them, and they interacted with the crowd the entire night. I am only disappointed I have not seen them sooner. I will definitely be seeing them in the future. TMBG are the epitome of Performers!!!

    Great show good venue

by Filkfest on 1/27/18Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

TMBG rocked. The venue was nice, parking and security were a breeze. The only downside was the show couldn’t go later because the Brunei is in a residential area. Other than wanting a longer show, it was fabulous.

    TMBG were like hanging out

by Niclynfrank on 1/27/18Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Have seen TMBG in concerts for a quarter of a century in venues across the world. This concert was like going out to a friends place and hanging out and having a laugh. It's always been a place where music and comedy mix. Love the Ponte Vedra concert hall as a venue. The mix of sarcasm, science and wit was by devoured by the mellow fans. I now have their two newest albums on rotation in the car. Great way to celebrate my sons 16th bday at his first concert with a band he has known since before he was born.

They are hilarious and band was on point!

by greatquux on 4/13/16Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

They're pretty damn good at stage banter, and of course, playing their awesome songs. Had an awesome time, the TLA is a historical theater that can't be reproduced but is in damn good shape for its age.

    Best Show Ever!

by TheLiquidLaser on 4/11/16Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

They Might Be Giants are the best band I've ever seen in concert! They played their new stuff, their old stuff, and their only kinda old stuff. They played their well known hits like Birdhouse in Your Soul, as well as totally obscure stuff like their cover of Bills, Bills, Bills. I told my wife that they never play Rhythm Section Want Ad in concert. Then a little while later they surprise us by playing that very song! It was like they were eavesdropping and wanted to delight us out of spite. These guys totally rock in concert. They have great presence, and they put on a hell of a show. My only regret is that I have no idea when I'll get to see them in concert again. No one does it better!

A funny, rocking show with great chemistry

    by theasp00 on 4/11/16Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

You can tell They Might Be Giants have been at this for a while and for the best reasons. The duo of Johns play off of each other expertly with originally funny and seemingly organic material. Their music is energetic and just genuinely fun, as well, and they played two full sets with an intermission. This is definitely a worthwhile show that I would highly recommend.

    TMBG rocked Variety Playhouse!

by itsmetimd on 4/11/16Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

I've been a TMBG fan for 30 years and somehow I've always missed their shows. Finally, I got to seem them live! There was no opening act for the show, they went straight into it. They took a brief intermission but all together played for nearly 3 hours. Great mix of old songs and new as well as some story telling and goofing off. It was awesome to see different people get hyped for all their songs, showing their fan-base spreads over several decades. I definitely plan to see them again as soon as I get a chance.

    It was pretty fun.

    by Mama404 on 4/11/16Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

I bought these tickets as a gift for my husband who LOVES They Might Be Giants. I only knew a couple songs, but over all it was fun. The lights were super annoying, maybe b/c we were sitting in the balcony. My husband loved it.

    by shannon7568 on 4/11/16Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

I have loved the band since college (25 years ago) and I am able to share their music with my 15 year old daughter who is now a huge fan. We had the best time at the show. Watching them live is quite an experience.

by PortHuronGirl on 4/9/16State Theatre - St Petersburg

I've been a fan since I first heard Ana Ng in college. I'm even more of a fan after seeing them live. The songs were a nice mix of old and new and I loved the banter with the band. First set and second set were really great. Especially loved the Destiny's Child cover, classic! Will definitely see TMBG in the future. Great venue down here in St. Petersburg, FL at the State.

I've been going to see TMBG since they were just 2 Johns and a drum machine. This was one of their best shows ever! The venue was very nice, too.
